I have EDS and was told I was weak and had anxiety until my early 30’s when it affected my heart enough I needed surgery. It was only then that I was diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome with the tnxb gene mutation. Even after diagnosis I’ve been accused of fabricating it in different situations. After surgery I had trouble breathing and large amounts of fluid flowing from my chest tube wound (I’d had a lung collapse in surgery) and they told me over and over that drainage was normal. Eventually I couldn’t stand and my breathing was very laboured and it turned out that I had a lot of fluid in my chest and my lung had partially deflated again.

ER rooms can be a nightmare. Obviously I appreciate the medical community immensely but ER rooms can be very frustrating.

Something happened to me with first responders...And I just don't get that because we have some of the best around. It started with the responders and carried over for 4 hours into the ER at the hospital. After a HEAD ON COLLISON I was unable to do anything except gasp for air. When responders arrived, not a single person checked my ABCs. With my airway so compromised, u would have thought someone would have checked my Airway, my chest, lungs, etc., in an effort to help my breathing. In the ambulance a nasal cannula was given to me for O2...I was gasping air thru my mouth, I could not breath thru my nose. When the ambulance arrived at the hospital and they started to take me into the hospital, as soon as we got inside the doors, they told me to get off of the stretcher...Twice!! Then told me to go sit and wait to sign in.??? WTF!? I then waited for 4 hours to see someone panting like a puppy unable catch its breath!! Constantly asking every nurse then every employee that walked past for help because I could not breath!!! In our ER, shortness of breath is supposed to be a reason to be fast tracked into the back!! Not something to mess with!!! After 4 hours, someone comes out and tell me to go out into the waiting room!!! I refused!!! There was no way I could tell but I stood up and emphasized.....I....cannot......Breathe!!!!! A doctor heard this time and put me in a room immediately. I was admitted to the hospital for 2 weeks then transferred to rehab with a broken sternum, 8-9 ribs on the left broken, my left lung collapsing, my foot SEVERELY contused, and with a case of PTSD after that episode. Did someone think I was just hyperventilating and upset ??? Being hysterical??? Giving reports as such rather than actually using a stethoscope or palpitating my chest or ribs to actually CHECK?! We were in a HEAD ON COLLISION with a huge pick up for Gods sake! So believe me, when a professional who has sworn to be there to help you in you worst possible moments fails you...your faith in them is absolutely shattered.

@@bradmccullough8240 Thank u sooo much!! I do suffer from a bit of PTSD from it, and though there is a small portion of collapse at the bottom of the left lung that is permanent (due to the 4 hr panting/delay in treatment) I actually showed 110% in my lung function test! Go figure! I put it down to determination!! Lol!! Thanks again! God bless!

What was the discharge diagnosis that night? Have you ever requested your medical records for your own viewing? I'm sure the answer is yes but it's a curiosity question me.

Doctor should definitely believe their patients and never accuse them of faking it particularly right off the bat and when their children. If they think someone is making something up it should be the very last resort and not the first thing they do and I hope that there is some consequence to that doctor for treating you so poorly and inadequately

I agree with you alot. Right around the same time 2010-2011 i had almost like a cold and the next day i woke up and got out of bed and dropped to the floor. I had no feeling from my hips down to my toes and i had to go to the ER and they thought i was dehydrated and after 1 iv bag and still nothing they made me try to stand up while holding these gaurds so i can support myself but still nothing, so after they stopped assuming and guessing they took me to get an x-ray and found out that it was something wrong with the nerves and said that it was a virus (also they never told us what virus it was they just told us that i might not walk again) affecting it that made me paralyzed but thankfully after 1-2 weeks it slowly went away and im 18 going on 19 and have full mobility and feeling now. I fully support your awareness about disabilities because there are people that need to be informed on topics like these

Yeah, it's sad that doctors sometimes don't believe their patients. We ought to be on the same page! We're fortunate to have some great doctors for our daughter, although we definitely also have communication issues from time to time, especially when it comes to surgeries. Thanks for sharing your story. You're not alone!

My daughter was pregnant but she didn’t know. She thought she was having her period and was in extreme pain. Went to the ER and they did a blood test. They congratulated her saying she was pregnant and the pain and bleeding was normal. Well.... it wasn’t normal at all. We had to take her to another hospital as she was in too much pain and she was having an abortion!!!! Had to go into surgery because everything was wrong. Some doctors are criminals.

In 2014 I fell off a ladder from about 12 feet up! I suffered a burst fracture at L3-5 resulting in a 4 level fusion and permanent nerve damage! Leaving me with an incomplete SCI . When I first arrived at the ER the nurse that wheeled me in was yelling at me to get on the bed , ( my wife who is a registered nurse drove me to hospital since we live in the country and I was hurting to bad to wait for ambulance )I kept telling her my left leg was not working and right was tingling and I could not by myself! She grabbed my belt loops and flung my like a rag doll up onto the bed! I then was left screaming in pain with no pain management and no stabilization for over an hour till they did a ct scan. Suddenly they rush into the ct room and put a neck brace on me and strap me down to the bed to prevent me from moving and take me straight to emergency surgery! They assumed I was faking until the radiologist doing the scan called some code over the intercom!

What a terrible experience, for your parents as well as yourself. This sort of dismissive treatment isn’t unique to USA, it happened to myself in the UK when I had my first pneumonia and a collapsed lung in 1986. Luckily as they were going to send me home for the third time there was a nurse there who told the doctor he could see me burning up. I think that nurse could have saved my life that night. The next day when the consultant came round she couldn’t apologise enough and said my pneumonia was an unusual silent type. When I asked why I hadn’t been X-rayed for the collapsed lung she said "Pardon?" The doctor who tried to send me home was with her and he knew he was in trouble. I like that lighting, it’s on the cooler side of white balance and still very soft.

Hi Sarah, so glad you're back posting videos again! You were one of the people who gave me inspiration to start my own channel to tell my story of recovering from Transverse Myelitis caused by MOG Antibody Disease and its always interesting to hear more of your stories good or bad (I can relate to both). Most of the people I know with a rare neurological condition (including myself) have had a few bad experiences in the hospital when dealing with staff. One example was a nurse did not believe I was not diabetic after my blood sugars were really high. After arguing for a few minutes saying I wasn't diabetic she finally walked away in a huff. Later that day I asked another nurse if the medication I was given raises blood sugars and the answer was yes! My blood sugars were taken an hour after I took the medication which explained why they were so high...

Hello . I have a friend in late 40's with Turners. She is an RN ! I got to learn about it when she did a paper on it in college . She let me see it too . I always thought she had Tourette . I also have a friend that is maybe late 50 's or even 60 with it too . She is a teacher in the Las Vegas area now . I didn't realize it is so rare . I wish you good luck !!

Did anyone ever say whether your long term effects would have been different if the original doctor had taken you seriously and you had started treatment right away?
@SarahToddHammer
@SarahToddHammer 3 жыл бұрын
The outcome most likely would have been different as there were treatments I could have received (IVIG, plasmapheresis, steroids, etc.) that night and it is imperative that treatments are given ASAP with spinal cord injuries. But there is no way to know for sure.

I am so sorry you had to go through that Sarah Todd. That was a horrible experience for you and your parents. I have a daughter who for over 10 years has had chronic migraines, about 20 a month. She is 44 now, but five years ago she went to a migraine institute and was told she’s one of 3% of people that get these as often and violent as she does. She has been through every medication there is for migraines and they’ve been trying medication that is used for other illnesses. When they get so bad she can’t stand it she hast to go to the hospital and they have to put her on morphine. And that’s the last thing she wants, but some hospitals think because they can’t see her pain that she just wants drugs. She hates being on any medication, wondering what it’s doing to her brain of course. And you’re exactly right when you go to the hospital you think you’re going to be treated and trust them to make you feel better.
