I've been telling people for years now, they should spend less time on the internet fighting about which camera has 1/10 of a stop better dynamic range, and spend more time out in the field doing THIS, actually getting to know their camera's histogram and how it translates from the back of the camera to post-production, so that they know exactly what they can get away with in the field, and nail their real-world exposures to within 1/3 or 1/2 a stop of "perfect" for any scene. So glad you made this video to help explain the process and the reason behind it!

Great instructional video on ETTR. Another thing to keep in mind, when viewing a histogram. First visualize the histogram divided into quarters; the far right quarter contain 50% of light data, next quarter contains 25%, next-12.5%. This is why ETTR works.

Thank you for sharing your workflow. ETTR or "maximise" sensor saturation is a key asset in digital photography. It can be used for every type of photography. If you are only saving raw files I would suggest changing following setting in camera. Most camera are set to sRGB color space with is a fairly "narrow" colour space compared to Adobe RGB so put this setting into Adobe RGB, take a muted profile and reduce contrast and saturation by e.g. -2. These tweaks will be reflected into the camera histogram. Some experimentation is still needed but I get fairly close results with this setup.

great video and information - have found viewing in LAB rather RGB as 'closer' to the scene. Going from scene to processing with your comments is wonderful. Thank you

Wow, finally I get it! I've watched you say countless times to ETTR but you seemed to go a bit further with examples this time of pushing even further past just ETTR. I paused and went out into my back yard with my camera and did some testing using this extra "now new to me, doh!" knowledge and wow, such a big difference. Pixel peeping in Photoshop shows a huge difference in shadow noise with the little extra pushing. Thank you so much, this has exposed me (see what I did there?) to a lot more possibilities for my landscape photography. Thank you. I was going to ask again when you're coming to visit Australia but seeing the incredible wilderness areas I'm guessing you might be a bit like me, explore your own country from one end to the other before even bothering to see others. You would LOVE the old growth forests in Tasmania though guaranteed. Giant tree ferns and everything covered in bright green moss. I think you'd fall in love.

I love that you went out to test it! Good stuff, glad it worked. I am just like you in that regard. It's hard to leave the western us, canada and alaska when they are all right here. Some day!

@@DaveMorrow thanks. I kept mine a little more basic and avoided the topic with the jpeg preview vs raw. I think you did a great job at explaning it.

Thanks for the video and for going into the details of your process. This is very helpful to see you go through every step. Have you ever used the flat profiles or installed any custom log equivalent profiles to push dynamic range even more?

What memories you must have, what an experience and what dedication ~ I’ve just had a look at you web page images > all stunning and amazing. I think when people look at a photo they very often have no idea of 1. The years of dedicated practice / study 2. The physical effort and hardships that go into capturing such images 3. The miles of hard slog when carrying a back pack with ‘stuff’ needed for the journey. 4. The art of taking a photo…. Truly amazing…….. Decided to go to my work station, open up LRc and take a look ...... there isnt ADOBE Neutral or Flat - bu there is standard? what do you suggest... really good to watch / listen to - I will add (expose to the Right) in my photography since it really makes sense. thanks very much for taking the time to share
