My Experience Growing Ranunculus in Crates

Crates are a good option if you need to move flowers (ie you're moving) or you want flexibility in placing them in the sun/shade/bringing them in at night. Although there's only so many crates one can cart back and forth, I think this can still be a realistic solution for a grower looking to grow a couple hundred buds.
In this video, I talk about my experience growing ranunculus in crates but also my plan for next year.

There is a pin trick people use on drooping tulips. I'm not sure if it will work on ranunculus but you can try. Push a sewing pin through the stem about an inch below the base of the flower. This is said to relieve air bubbles and have the flower drink up the water better causing them to perk up. The bouquet you made is very lovely. I love spring flowers.

Love hearing your experience! However There's one thing- you said they were similar to tulips in that they get most of their nutrients from the bulb... According to Dave Dowling, And my personal experience, ranunculus are actually extremely heavy feeders. Dave says that they are very very heavy feeders and nitrogen especially in the beginning...

That is really good to know! I’ve been looking all over for that type of information like in research papers and haven’t found anything on that! I feel like most people just fertilizer no matter what (ie putting bulb fertilizer with tulip bulbs during planting even though it’s not necessary). With the amount of blooms a single corm can put up, I can believe that they are heavy feeders. Thx for this!

Thanks! That makes sense. I was really slacking with fertilization and I suspected Ranunculus were probably heavy feeders. First time growing them, so I really appreciate these tips!

I live in zine 6b NY, I potted up ranunculus never bloomed in June.. so I left it it received only six hours of afternoon sun and in September they started blooming. Use a splash of quick dip in the harvest bucket.❤

Hope you feel better! My ranunculus did not do well - I'm in 7b /8a and it just got too warm too fast. We went from winter to summer - very little spring. And yes, I overwintered them in a low tunnel - what a nightmare. Covering, uncovering, covering, uncovering because it would get way to hot during the day and rain and cold at night. And at one point we had 80 degrees for days then cold rain and then freezing temps overnight down to 19 degrees! I lost 1200 tulips! BUT, summer blooms already starting - have my first sunflower showing color today and I have a gorgeous Dahlia already blooming. So, it's looking up!!

Omg you’ve had quite the season already. That’s a good point about overwintering that I hadn’t thought about. I’d have assume the most annoying part would be worrying about snow! Sorry to hear you lost all those tulips!! Glad you have such a positive attitude. Yay to sunflowers and dahlias coming in!

@@tinalee3328 Hi from 6b Saint Louis, Missouri. I had same issue...got hot too fast, and I was growing them in elevated beds. So I dug them up, put them in pots and brought them inside under full spectrum lighting. Also brought in aphids...OMGosh devastation. Trying again this year. Best of luck and blooms!

I grew my ranunculus in gallon pots, and it's been a hassle - crates was a genius idea. I'm going to try a fall planting with some corms I saved, and experiment with growing air conditioning.

Ohh lmk how that goes! I do think that you could hypothetically grow a crate or two indoors with grow lights and it could be worth it from a profitability perspective. It’s just if you’re trying to grow hundreds to thousands, you’re left still planting in the great outdoors 😆

I noticed you mentioned you were going to sell your excess corms because you had to buy so many wholesale. In my state of Oklahoma in order to resell my excess seeds (because I bought from GEO) I would need to get a APPLICATION FOR OKLAHOMA SEED DEALERS LICENSE in order to do that. I'm quite sure that all the states have similar or different requirements. I haven't seen all of your videos but I've been kinda getting all my permits and licenses and maybe a good topic would be to make sure everyone realizes that they need to do all of this. Thank you once again for your informative chats with us.

That is a really good point to make. It's the same in my state, you have to do something similar. I think selling ecommerce is just a different ballgame all together - from setting up your site to handle ecommerce, streamlining shipping, etc :)

Your videos and work inspired me so much. We recently purchased a property in VA that has 7 acres so planning to start a flower farm. I have been growing in my small backyard for years but now I have the land. Want to get some advise from you on starting a farm like how to register and all. I heard they come out to inspect your plants so do we need to get registered first before even planting :-)

Every state is different! In NJ, you don’t need to register unless if you are selling potted plants (ie anything with soil). So for cut flowers, I didn’t have to apply for anything. I only applied for a LLC and EIN, both of which are standard for any business 🙂. I would call your county to get more info!

I am here Spring 2023. My first time growing ranunculus. Zone 7A, NJ. 250 corms. Yes I agree a lot of work. I am planting them in 3 batches approx 84 in each batch. My goal was to plant them 2 weeks apart so I could have continuous blooms. However, it looks like it will be more like 4 weeks apart due to the timing of them getting roots and leaves. I am afraid I may run into weather that is too warm for them. May 9th and I haven’t even started the 3 batch. The second batch isn’t mature enough to go in the ground and I don’t have enough pots to put 3rd batch in. Maybe our late spring early summer weather will be mild this year. I certainly hope they reward me with their pretty blooms.

Oomph yeah! 3rd batch may be a bit too late at this point, but who knows, maybe you'll get fall blooms! I've at this point lost all hope in my 2023 ranunculus lol

I have yet to see a ranunculous bud, I only just got my first Bachelor's Button flower, we are way behind on blooms, but that's OK, Mother Nature never follows our plan. My quick google search says the droopy heads are from the weight of the head, meaning the flower head is so large, the weight of it causes the head to droop. This makes sense as that's what happened to my sunflowers last year. I planted them too far apart and the heads ended up being too big and heavy.

Hopefully you’ll get ranunculus buds soon! So the droopy heads due to the weight partially makes sense. It’s the bigger heads that flopped. But I feel like I’ve seen way bigger heads that don’t flop ? 🤷🏻‍♀️

@@bareflowerfarm This video says that about 30% of the ranunculous she gets are curved down and this is how she wires them. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aLWkiKyaz7C6fp8.html Also, I've seen/heard a Common Flowers talk about dahlias that are flopping and how to put them in bouquets. Presumably the same holds true for ranunculous. She said to face the flop inwards and let the bouquet hold the flopped head up.

Really pretty bouquet! What is that grass? I love it! We got the heat in New Hampshire too and my ranunculus took it hard. 😭

That grass is a weed lol! My husband wanted to mow it and I was like no!! Leave it! It appears to have good vase life? Sorry i can’t be more helpful here 😆

Thank you ☺️. I am in zone 6a growing in west central NJ. Smart pots are pots made from this fabric that prevents roots from circling (being root bound) and instead promote new root growth. It’s a permeable fabric which means when the roots hit the fabric, there’s air and it gets the root to just stop growing as it normally would in a plastic pot and instead shoot out new roots. It’s a much better alternative to terracotta and plastic pots!

You did a wonderful job with the bouquets. Sorry to hear that you had COVID and it’s very sweet of you to share the beauty with friends and family. In zone 8B, I tried overwintering my ranunculus and forgot to cover them one night, Thus, all 200 corms died from frosts & eventually rotted 😔 However, some sunflowers self-seeded in that area; they are now over 12 feet tall and have started flowering for me. Happy Memorial Day weekend & get well soon!

Oh no to the ranunculus!! Crazy how Just ONE night can kill them! But at least the summer sunflowers are coming in. Thank you for your kind words ☺️

Thank you! And yes it’s cat mint! The prior owner had a few catmint bushes in the landscaping!

Some of mine flopped like that too - I think it got too hot and humid a couple days? I can’t think of anything else that would do it but I did wonder about a virus or bacteria too…

What’s strange is that none flopped while growing, it was after picking and sitting in a cool basement that they started to flop! I was thinking that if it was a virus or bacteria, it’s weird that only a few flopped and not all if they’re all in the same bucket? 🤔

@@bareflowerfarm ohhh that’s interesting. Mine flopped in the beds. And not all the stems on the same plant flopped…and some plants didn’t have any issues. I did have a few aphids but was able to get them before it got bad (so far) so I wonder if the ones that flopped were ones with aphids and they either did too much damage or infected the stem? Google hasn’t been a lot of help so far…

Aphids may have sucked juice from the stems. Just a guess. I know damping off looks the same but occurs at the soil surface when there is not enough air flow.

They were on clearance from holland bulbs.

This time of year, there are some massive sales at like holland bulbs. That being said, they’re not necessarily premium or always in the best condition
