I worked at a library for about three years near the end of high school and community college years. I spent countless hours processing new materials for circulation. Every new hardcover we got in got a demco cover 😄 I've always wondered about getting some for my own collection. There are also plastic "sticker" like covers that we would use for paperbacks, that would cover them in a tougher - more resistant plastic cover. It's important to note these are permanent - unlike the very convenience demco ones 😁

I bought some contact paper and it is so though to put on and half the time I messed it up, so I’ve stopped it for now.

This was a great video! Last year I decided to cover all of my hardcovers with mylar. I ended up going with Brodart. Depending on where you go, they are about 25 for $30-$35. Some people who are way more experienced and have more books by it by the roll to be cost effective then just cut off what they need. Brodart is really nice because you have just the edge along the top and the bottom features semi-perforated lines on the paper backing that help you line up your folds. Then the plastic cover just folds over like you just did in your video.

I’ve been using the BroDart dust jacket protectors. I like them, but yeah, the gloss is not camera friendly.

I also have my whole collection in Brodart archival book covers. Very important for anyone serious about maintaining the quality of their books. Also, I have found that using a very high grit sandpaper (8,000+) works fairly well against any types of finger prints / smudges without doing any actual harm to the covers.

I was recommended Brodart covers, so that's what I bought. I'll give Demco a try and see how they compare.

Thanks for your video. Your sheet seemed to fit perfectly to the book, but I'd like to know how to match the sheets to various sizes of books, with different height. Is it better to trim it when there is extra on top and bottom?

I didn’t trim for any. If it’s a standard Hardcover I just put it in the Demco cover and it fit in.

I have used a slightly different(also demco) cover, their "Superfolds", and they come in different heights and widths(or by the roll that you cut to width), so I get 10inch ones for standard HCs and 9inch ones for BCEs. I get the "long" versions as I found that with a lot of my large fantasy books the regular sized covers would not be wide enough to cover the entirety of the inner jacket flaps, and having extra width seems to make it easier to get the jacket "seated" all the way. I also have a roll that is like 14inches and does not have a paper backing to cover larger format books and ones that have double sided jackets.

It’s a great video…but I don’t like the feel of covers on my books. That’s just me though

Probably need more tape on cover if actually going to read it with cover on. Your Demco model is analagous to a Brodart Justafold I. Try buying a roll rather than sheet if you have to cover many books. Cheaper.

I taped the inner flaps together so the adhesive doesn’t yellow or tear the book

I believe I got the 10 x 21 books. Usually only works for adult hardcovers. Any YA or Middle Grade is probably too small.

I tried twice with my demco covers and it ends up a disaster every time! Sigh. Might not be my thing I guess.

There is a kind of trick to it, and it took me a couple of tries to figure it out. It’s hard to explain, but I’m sorry it hasn’t worked for you. Maybe a different kind of cover would work better.
