One thing to note is that lactic acid kind of occupies a different role than retinol. Rather than just increasing the skin cell turnover, it is a genuinely exfoliating product. Depending on your skin type, you may still want to continue using it after reintroducing retinol, although likely at a less frequent rate. Personally, I use my retinol (tretinoin) 4-5 times per week, and Good Genes 1-2 times per week on off days. I do have non-reactive, oily skin that thrives with all kinds of exfoliation, so take my recommendations with a grain of salt if that’s quite outside your norm.

I use a more mild version of what you described. Adapalene 2/3 times per week and the ordinary’s 5% lactic acid once or occasionally twice per week.

Same. Retinol 4-5 x/week and AHA on off days.

@@chloro8306This is true. I was more indicating that because retinol is not an exfoliator, using it in place of an exfoliating product may not leave skin with the same results. I’ll edit to clarify :)

Hannah! I just *needed* to lyk that I bought A Royal Scandal lol. Completely irrelevant to this video, but between the name, the scent of the Gucci lipstick (incredible), the engraved metal tube, and the virtually mythic status that this product has taken on in your corner of the internet, it felt necessary to inform you of this *event* .

Literally last night I was flipping back and forth between older and newer videos of yours and trying to figure out what’s the secret of how you keep looking better with time and now a video roadmap of just that! 😁 My prior conclusion was also a synergistic combo though, everything from the lighting in the new studio, the glowy makeup trends really work on you, motherhood, a sense of feeling more settled/confident - it all adds up to you looking fabulous! And that’s just the shell, while it’s wonderful that’s lovely, the inner work you’ve done and shared with us so we can do the same is what has me grateful for your content and constantly happy for more.

Hannah - definitely talk to your dermatologist or your child’s pediatrician, but among all the conflicting statements from various dermatologist KZfaqrs, I heard *someone* with a medical degree say that the concern with retinol (and Vitamin A in excess) lies in the way it impacts the formation of key structures as your fetus is developing in the womb. (Part of why the warnings are so emphatic and no-exceptions is because of how severe those impacts have been observed to be.) Once your baby has been born, there is no longer any risk to the formation of those structures because they already exist. Further, the concentration of vitamin A is different in utero vs breastmilk. BUT I do not have any medical degree, so everyone should do their due diligence and make sure they have the go-ahead from their care team before using Retinols on their skin.

If you feel some trepidation from the price and/or scent of the Good Genes product, you might consider The Ordinary’s lactic acid (available at 5% or 10% strengths). It tends to achieve much the same results with a significantly lower price and no scent.

I'm a big fan of The Ordinary! The lactic acid makes my face feel noticeably silky without any of the sensitivity issues I had with Good Genes. I ended up using the Good Genes more like a peel and would wash it off when it started to burn. I can leave The Ordinary on all night!

My brain refuses to believe, that you became a mom a couple of months ago. My son is almost 2 years old now, and I cannot even dream of having time for a bath. And as he was a couple of month old I sometimes didn’t have time to wash my face, because he would be screaming any time, I was not holding him in my arm. I just don’t know what kind of magic you practice to have time (any time) for yourself 😮

One of my fave products is Krave’s Great Barrier Relief Serum! The texture is more like a lightweight lotion than what I typically think of a serum, and it smells faintly of vegetables (probably due to the tamanu oil?) and when my skin sensitivity is flaring up, that’s the only product I’ve found that I can apply without feeling stingy and burny and it is just so soothing and gets my skin barrier back in good shape in no time!

Latic acid is such a fav! Good Genes is good but it is so expensive, not super strong, and has fragrance. The Ordinary is my go to. it comes in both 5% (like Sunday Riley) and 10%, 10x (literally) cheaper. It’s boring but dame it works and I lovvvve it on the body. Retinols and retinoids aren’t technically exfoliates, I personally love using both (on separate days) throughout the weeks! Loved hearing about your routine ❤

It's taken awhile to get past the red and peely stage again so sometimes i have to back off but one day my forehead suddenly looked divine. I also have been using the Olay super serum for my antioxident serum. I love your product reviews and recommendations♥️ we tend to have the same skin care goals. I am older than you, and at a different stage in my life perimenopause. Which brings me to my unspoken hero/villain: hormones. Throughout pregnancy and breast-feeding one’s hormones will be coming in and out of balance, and could be one thing that’s behooving you at this moment, AND potentially have caused that feeling in your skin to begin with. I think a lot of us uterus/ovary having folks don’t often think about those hormones in the context of our skin hair and nails and we certainly dont often talk about them amongst each other in this context.

You can use tretinoin while breastfeeding! I have done a deep dive into it and got prescribed it by a dermatologist, but i have to say that some doctors are too afraid to prescribe it, without any truly any ground for it. Another efficient anti-acne ingredients that can be used while both pregnant and breastfeeding are azelaic acid, BHA, sulfur (+ some antibiotics).

I've been loving Neighbourhood Botanicals, a UK natural indie brand. I don't have major skin concerns other than maintaining moisture and condition now that I'm 44, while balancing texture and pores. Having been oily-leaning my whole life, to my total surprise I've really embraced oils and even a little layering - I use NB's Mild Mannered face lotion followed by their Daily Glow oil. Then SPF etc. I've really noticed a difference. And it's ££ sustainable - I just don't want to fall in love with something that I can't afford to keep buying. I'm on my third or fourth go round with my NB products, and I find they last several months.

Hey just wanted to let you know that the product you have listed “Rx Ivermectin “ must be a miss-spelling, and you might want to correct it because Ivermectin is an anti-parasitic medication to combat intestinal parasites 🦠!😂. (Most common use) It’s used a lot in animal products to deal with internal and external parasites, which is where I became aware of it since I work with animals. So my the look on my face 🙀🙀🙀😹😹😹 when I saw Ivermectin!!!

Depending on the ingredient, cleaners can be great delivery mechanisms for actives. I have very dry, sensitive, but very acne prone skin. Benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid (acids generally) only need a short contact time to be effective and for me, applying a cleanser in the shower and letting it sit on for a bit while I do other things, then rinsing it off is a great way to incorporate them without irritating my skin.

I have been loving acids for my skin at night and sealing my treatments and moisturizer with The Ordinary B oil and Pycnogenol 5% and then some raw shea butter. My skin was dull and irritated/dry from some neglect and the weather. I alternate in my night routine using The Ordinary glycolic acid 7%, Peach Slices Redness Relief Azelaic Acid Serum, and adapalene (Differin Gel). I usually skip using one of these every other night or I just peel or get too irritated. So some nights it’s just double cleanse, moisturizer with b oil and pycnogenol, and then shea butter. I really like the La Roche Posay Lipikar cream and the baum ,too. I use the cleanser from that line after using the ELF Holy Hydration cleaning balm. I may switch back the the Good Molecules cleansing balm next time I purchase. I feel they work equally as well but the latter comes in a much larger amount while costing about the same.

Dermatology brand lactic acid refining serum has been a game changer for me and I just noticed it has nopal cactus extract in it! It’s a nice lightweight slightly creamy serum, also contains licorice root, mandelic acid and vit E. I’ve been really happy with the Dermatology brand sunscreen, as well as their vitamin CE ferulic acid serum. A little easier on the wallet than the Good Gene brand👍

Happy to see the Indie Lee line get some positive attention -- I've been using the brightening cleanser for years, am 46 but always mistaken for younger. The light exfoliation is perfect for me. And mostly I feel like people (who likely don't know any better) roast the cleanser for always being in the Ulta 21 Days of Beauty lineup as a kind of "desperate loser product" -- but it's REALLY good! (And as long as it's in the sale you never need to pay full price)

My Skincare faves, a bunch of stuff from Beauty of Joesen, Haru Haru and Pykung Yul. They do sooo many good products that are affordable but feel luxe. Also the DHC eyelash serum, the one that has a spoolie brush like a mascara. Incredible!

The Tula mask has barely perceptible shimmer, which helps give a glow and blur if you don’t wash it off. Actually pretty nice under foundation.

I wish my skin wasn't so sensitive. I can't use anything with fragrance or essential oils. I have extremely dry skin so I have to use A LOT of layers. I mostly use K-beauty as I find it to be better and cheaper.

my sister just gifted my the cocokind sea clay mask; I like it because it’s more lightweight than other clay makes and much easier to wash off but delivers that same effect. I’ve also been enjoying CeraVe’s cleansing balm and eye makeup remover (the former you mentioned in a hot take), and Thayer’s Snow Mushroom Hydrating Milky Cleanser. It does what it needs to do, and it’s very gentle.

The chlorophyl serum has become a staple in my routine. I used their chlorophyl mask for years but the serum version is even better and easier to use. My redness is completely gone and my skin is much more even tone. I use quite a few high end skincare products and that Cocokind Chlorophyll serum rivals in quality. My skin hates vit c so I havent used that one, and haven’t had the need for the barrier serum since my skin is quite oily, but I just recommended it to a friend complaining about super dry skin and she called the day after to thank me for the rec cause overnight her skin had drastically improved. Underrated high quality indie brand. 💚

The product that I think has made the most difference for me has been a hypochlorus acid spray. Tower 28 makes one but I've been using one from e11ement that I got on Amazon. I was on Accutane for 10 months in 2020 for deep, painful cystic acne and while that eliminated those ind of blemishes, I still had small acne spots that never really went away. Using the hypochlorus acid spray under makeup and at night has been a game changer. It's the only I've added in the last year and my acne is nearly non-existent.

Lactic acid is the least deep of the Aha/bhas! I loved Sunday Riley lactic acid too but have found that other ahas or combos of ahas is better for me. And I do both retinol and ahas. I love Dr. Idriss' KZfaq channel pillowtalk derm. Since I've been learning more about how different ingredients work my routine has been so much more effective.

Since I've been using Niacinamide 10% +Zinc (The Ordinary) and Intensive Wrinkle Repair with retinol and vitamin C (Paula's Choice) every day, my skin is at its best. It even helped with my rosacea! I didn't change these products since one and a half year now and my skin stays really the same good condition. Another product I love that really smoothes my skin is Biotherm Life Plankton Elixir. These 3 products are are doing little wonders for my skin❤ The rest are moisture creams from no particular brand

Funny you mention that ren serum, have had it kicking about for a little and never really used but it has been the PERFECT product for sandwiching tretinoin for me! I cleanse, use that, then use tret (not every night, but the nights I use it this is my routine). Also great for calming on my off nights, love it! Ps I also love Sunday Riley CEO - haven’t had it in a while but I find that type of vitamin c (tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate)works better for my skin than L ascorbic acid vitamin c’s (which most of the common and famous c serums are)…

Good Genes is a good product but an easily duped product IMO. I use Shani Darden’s lactic acid and I think it’s comparable. I know not all companies are perfect, but after the fake reviews controversy SR left a bad taste in my mouth. Indie Lee is a great brand, love their Q10 Toner, smells divine and its moisturizing and the Squalane Oil is great too. Have heard great things of the brightening cleanser. Need to try the Tula mask after your glowing review along with others you mentioned. Thanks for sharing!

Yes, I discovered something wonderful! It's baobab oil. I'm using it twice a day as my lightweight serum and I love it. Baobab oil is very lightweight but so so nourishing. It doesn't make my skin look greasy; it doesn't cause me to break out. I'm perimenopausal, and my skin was suffering from tightness, dryness, and flakiness. The only change I made was adding baobab oil. I feel completely hydrated. It's a marvel!
