Christian Einshøj’s mother mentioned the ghost in passing. Had her nonchalance on the matter not given her son pause, she might never have mentioned the haunting again. Read more: www.theatlantic.com/video/ind...
“She described the encounter not as something unpleasant, but rather a welcome distraction,” Einshøj told me. “That immediately struck me as interesting. What kind of person would welcome a visit from the dead? Certainly, someone who had experienced a great loss.”
"Haunted" was directed by Christian Einshøj. It is part of The Atlantic Selects, an online showcase of short documentaries from independent creators, curated by The Atlantic.

I think that when she lost her son, she became more aware of other people’s pain of losing someone. This is probably the main reason she became obsessed with missing people. At one time during the film, she mentioned how it must feel for the family of the missing person. She has experienced loss and understands what others are going through when they’ve lost someone they love. She seems like a very caring person but is carrying a pain that no one can take away because she doesn’t want to let go. She holds on to the pain like it’s her son.

Spoiler alert: I dont understand this video. It comes off as a woman in pain (I'm guessing the director doesn't have kids ? He seems resentful of her mourning her 3 year old son??? What worse pain is there?) and her children don't care what so ever. If your mom does not deserve your time then why? What has she done? Again, I don't get this video. It made me sad and feel horrible for the mother. But the part when they are laughing I loved but he didn't seem to appreciate the humor of the situation. He mistook her modesty as a direct insult to his skills apparently. That poor woman. Son wouldn't even stay for dinner ? She can't feel empathy for others going through a tragedy? She has a lovely home and I wish I lived somewhere so beautiful. I hope this guy finds the fulfillment he's looking for

What a lovely lady who has had to endure such tragedy. Yet another tragedy is the sad disconnect with her sons. I do hope they love her for who she is and value the time they have with her. We take them for granted and then unfortunately realize too late: Mothers are simply irreplaceable.

I love the way you can see the original camera script and direction of your film losing control and the narrative and personality of your mother sort of setting the pace and showing more about your relationship. I think this has already thrown new light or maybe rekindle a closer friendship between you . You can see her relax more in your company and your filming becomes the same.

She seems like a lovely person. It must be very lonely for her that no one in her own family believes her experience. It doesn't seem that her children value her much, and that's really sad. If her sons can't stand to hear about the tragedies because it brings them down, it's better to communicate that than to avoid her. The fact that the tragedies affect her just means she is a very empathetic person. Maybe others find hurting for strangers inconvenient, but it means she feels true compassion for others. She seems like a very good woman. I hope her son visits her more after this.

@@tiarnan76, you are right to acknowledged that demons existed. The human spirits do exist. When people died they become spirit. I have speak to demons three times so far. I have many experienced seeing human soul. I have seen God once. I have seen Angeles countless times. One has been with me for a year. No one can make me say that they don't exist. Not for all the price of the world's wealth would make me say they do not exist. Here is how you can tell the difference between the demons & the human ghosts. The first sign is that they are very ugly. The second is that they have glowing red color Eyes. Third, they always trying to scares you. Fourth, they can physically harm you. And you can hear them. These are the characteristics of the demons. The characteristics of the human ghost are: A. They appeared in your dream not speaking. They knows you can not see or hear them. Thus why they do not appeared by their own speaking to you. Only through an Angel's assistance that they will speak to you & you can hear them. B. They can not do any harms to the living. Because they have no ability to do so. The human soul can not stay on Earth because we have to continues on living. And there are great dangers to stay. That is why people speaks of Angel coming to guides them. God have Angeles recieving the human souls to guides them during the journey from Earth to a demension in space close to Earth. When we died, an Angel will come to call us to go. I died a few times and God kept bringing me back. God is determines to make me complete my time on Earth. Only when you understands why that you would believed all that I say. Without the understanding, all that I have said will serms like something is wrong with my minds or thinking. He has great plans for me. I did not agreed to returned. I was convinced to returned. And I am very glads. For if I did not returned, I would have missed knowing & experienced great things. This woman was not haunted. She has loved one who died came to her to give her a message. But, she had doubts & fears. Thus, her message can not get through.

Mothers often "pull away" because they don't want their children to feel forced to interact with them, and they are worried they are bothering their adult children. It's clear through the scene with your brother that she wants to spend more time with you all. You should take the opportunity while you still have the chance and still have the time to reframe happier memories of her compared to someone just obsessed with death. It can be hard making an adult child and parent relationship, but it's worth it. Good luck.

And then people ask me why I chose to be child - free and prefer to fill my life with doggos and catos. Is it just me or did this film smack of teenage passive aggressiveness? If anything, his portrayal of his mum, only showcase the lack of depth of his own emotional intelligence. At this point in time I would say the only person in the family with documentary - making talent is his dad. Those few seconds the husband filmed his wife and young sons having fun....and the moment his chose to capture his wife loving on their dying child....said more about the mum and dad - than the entire "documentary". To not only lose a child but to also end up with such selfish, emotionally stunted, navelgazing, adult sons....poor woman. Big hugs to the mum and dad. Hope the sons catch a wake - up and make the effort to really get to know - and celebrate - their parents.

My unpopular opinion is, that it is very difficult to know why some children don't visit their parents. Reasons are many and some very valid, having especially in mind emotional wounds, which todays culture likes to sweep under the rug. I am not saying this is the case in this video, I just disagree with the notion that visiting your parents is something you should do as a must.

@@user-hp1ew9zl4o I share your opinion, and I don't visit my parents. I had a shit childhood as a product of divorce, and you hit on the primary reason that most people claim for not visiting their parents; emotional wounds. No physical abuse on my part, just emotional neglect and a serious lack of support and guidance. You can heal the emotional wounds like I have done, but the memories are permanent. I can't change the past, but I did break the cycle and changed my future for the better.

I think these men are abhorrent in their treatment of their mother. My son was killed at 17, and she is leaps and bounds ahead of me in living and participating in life. Y’all, she’s your mom! If she says she saw a ghost, well then she did. As for their perceived “fixation” on the news and the mountain, so what? Just because her belief system doesn’t line up with your oh so much superior one, is that cause for not honoring your mother? I am ashamed for y’all to have such navel gazing, selfish behavior deprive her of love.

As a daughter who lost her mother as a baby and then lost her father in her early 30s, with no siblings or grandparents, I say, spend all of the time that you can with your family, you are so very blessed, and your mother deserves the world, I’m sure your father is just as wonderful. As a mother of two sons, who are currently 11 and 13, I say, LOVE YOUR MAMA. She deserves the world. Her grief, her loss is immeasurable, and she grieves you 3 growing up and leaving the nest too. She had lost what many cannot understand. Please be with her more, call her, and tell her you love her. Don’t be condescending, don’t baby her. She would go to the ends of the earth for you and your brothers. She stopped calling because she felt she was losing you, and didn’t want to pressure you, or risk losing you, maybe she felt you already slipped away. She’s heartbroken. As a mother to my son this broke my heart to see the videos of her with her children to now when they do not come round. Love and embrace the people in your life. It is sad when families scatter and flee memories (ghosts) of tragedies and misfortune leaving some behind to bear the brunt of the pain. The mother has faced the ghosts and channeled her grief into helping young children. She has overcome her fear of ghosts. Her children are stlll hiding from the devastation that tragedy caused. Perhaps this film will bring the ghost to light to show that a family can overcome and move on together.

You don't want to spend time with your mother because she's a bit weird? Is THAT all? Gee, mine was horribly abusive and - as I learned later - massively narcissistic all through my childhood and into my adult life as well. I just didn't have a word for it until I learned what a narcissist is. I had to cut all contact with her eventually because she either would not or could not stop being verbally abusive to me....for literally no reason, any time I talked to her. It was really bad, and I'm only learning now how much damage she has done to me. Your mother seems lovely and I would love to hang out with her. Just because she sees or senses things you cannot, does not make her crazy. She's just a very empathically sensitive person, and she sees the world differently than most. While seeing spirits is not my thing (nor would I want it to be) I too, am an empath, and I see the world differently to most people, because of my "gifts". It's hard being different in this way. If I were there with you, I'd give you a firm clout upside the head, and tell you to stop being so small minded and self centered. There's plenty of people who grew up with abusive parents who SHOULD distance themselves from such toxic people. Be grateful that your mother merely sees and is aware of stuff that you cannot. You're an ungrateful brat. You need a spanking and some time standing in the corner.

Being verbally abusive often runs in the family, especially in people with zero self-awareness or capacity for self-reflection . I’m so sorry that happened.

There is nothing more painful than the loss of a child. That loss stays with you for the rest of your days and although the healing and grieving process are evident, it still lingers like that of child following you around like a puppy dog. Those memories will be with her forever Christian and I hope you and your brothers realize the pain she suffers everyday. She is fascinated with love, loss, death and the hear after because she wonders about Kristofer. Love her, eat with her, talk with her, and visit as often as you can because one day, you will not have her.

I looked up ghost stories on KZfaq and it brought me here. I figured I'd be watching something frightening and indeed I did little did I know that it's something that happens to millions of people everyday and instead of being scared I thank God for my children's health. This truly is a ghost story. This family will forever be haunted. I think this was a beautiful and moving short film

I cant afford & I hate San Francisco, but since my mom lives here, i refuse to move more then 10 miles away. She needs someone to help her. She not only is slowing down from aging, she is also disabled and deaf. I see my mom as my best friend, because she is. My dad died 13 yrs ago,and i ache at the thought of her being all alone. So while I may have been blessed with parents who did their best ,many other children are stuck with "parents" who wont even bother TRYING.So i understand why some people are distant from their parents, because they were never close to begin with. Be happy u cant understand how someone could get distant from their parents,it means your parents were;well...PARENTS!. I have a few students, but 1 in particular, whose parents should not be left to care for a goldfish, let alone a human being. I can almost bet my left butt cheek, one day this student i speak of ,will want nothing to do with her parents. .Sorry for the long comment and any grammar ,spelling errors. Im just an art &music teacher, not a teacher teacher

I'm distant from my parents because they're toxic. My father is an ex convict. He leeches off of other people financially and treats those around him like they're his pawns. And what he did to go to prison? I won't get into that, but he honestly deserved his sentence. My mother has always told me that I'll never make it. She tells me that when I chase my dreams, I'm wasting my time. But also that she doesn't think I could succeed at anything else. She doesn't think I can live on my own. She tells me that I'm insane. She has terrible taste in men, and let what they tell her to do influence her actions. After I had a bipolar manic episode at college and was forced to leave, instead of taking care of me she kicked me out because her boyfriend said to. I was fragile and unstable, both mentally and financially. It always hurt that my mom didn't believe in my ability to do things on my own, but also wouldn't help me when I needed it. She kicked me when I was down. It wasn't cool. However, the lady in this video seems to be very kind and a good mother. I don't understand why anyone who has such good, kind, and loving parents would ever throw that away. I hope her children go to see her more often before she's gone, and they realize what they had too late.

I just randomly fell upon this short film. I have been living in Denmark for about 30 years and I feel that the relationship between the producer and his mother is something that could be reflective of the society here in Scandinavia. I've read some comments about not respecting his mother, but that I feel is not true. They actually have a good relationship. Of course there might be unsaid words between them, but I see their love for each other. It is in the way they interact with each other, for me shows this. This was a very compelling film.

You need to spend more time with your mother. What an earth angel she truly is. It looks like she an empath and possibly the ghost she saw could have been one of the missing people her heart breaks for. What a lovely woman. I love her and to lose a child of only 3 years old. I couldn't imagine that pain. You really really need to show your mother as much love as possible. Mine passed 4 years ago an what I wouldn't give to have her back. Our mothers are our biggest fans and love us more than anyone ever will.

This is so sad to see the disconnect of a mother and her somewhat grown children. I say somewhat because people in the prime of their lives don't see or won't see the world of older people or their own parents. For me, after turning 60 yrs. old 7 years and 3 months ago my conscience mind now understands the meaning of our own mortality as I age. Your mother lost a child born from her own body do to a medical condition. That heartbreak is there today and will be to the day she dies. That loss did not make her love for you any less but I am sure you must have felt that way. The deaths she follows in the area she lives is her way maybe handling the meaning of getting older. Your mother believing she saw a ghost may have happened. Remember, we do not know all there is until we die. Give everyone you know the right to believe what they want without judging them by your beliefs. One day sooner than you may think, your mom may not be alive for your rare visits that you find so terrible to stand. Please don't wait because once you get older your views on life may change and she won't be there when you decide she did have the rights to her beliefs too. I was never loved by my parents and now they are both dead but I still miss the people that gave me a life to live. You should all stop judging her but love her because she is your mom before you will forever be missing her. Good luck.

I moved last year to be closer to my mom. Now that she is 58 years old and being who she is, never worked and endured an abusive relationship to raise us. She chose that as she is lonely in this world and she didn't know what else to do having two toddlers. My mom did a lot and I am so glad that I chose to take her in and have her in my home. She sits and watches tv or knit. She sometimes cook for herself but very rarely and she is full of pain. I guess, it is the pain she bottled down and endured from my father .. she just broke herself staying with him and he was a monster. Being the woman I am, I can't be more serious saying: I fear the day she leaves this earth. Realising what your mother did to you and fearing to lose that love is hard. She is always going to be a source of love, warmth and care .. even when she is expressing it in the most hated ways. I know she is just in pain and she has her own demons that she is struggling with but all I care is to keep her alive and to give her a home, a safe place to live at for the rest of her life.

This is so sad she lost her beautiful 3 year old son but no doubt had no time to grieve for him as she will have been looking after other kids and now they have grown up and found there own life,s which we all do she has tried to put her loss so far back in her mind its stayed there for so long so now its probably steeping out slowly but surely God bless her and I hope her lovely family realise how much she,s hurting inside and give her break and know that she really loves and needs them all in her life xx

I am Native America and this is not how we treat our Elders, thank the Great Creator. when she passes this earthly rhelm then they will know she was closer to the earth and could see things. This lady is a sensitive soul, and sensitive souls are able to see things others don't I wish I could befriend her and give her the comfort her awful children won't Just the way your children see you treat your mother is the way your children will someday treat you.

I agree with you 100 %, i have seen and experience spirits on multiple occasions, my sons know i am sensitive and can appreciate that in my life. What concerns me is that the 3 living sons are all lost. They believe in no God , just like their grandmother who was an atheist. Of course her sons don't believe she saw a spirit, they believe in no god, sad. Those 3 boys are lost and the 4th one has died already. I felt sorry for the mother, she's lost her 4 born son, and the other 3 non believers do not appreciate a good mother, and it shows.

While this was beautifully done it truly broke my heart. The loss of a child is deeply profound and until you've lived it yourself you have no idea how painful it is. It's unbearable. Your mom is a wonderful human being that is empathetic and compassionate towards others and their tragedies because she's been there. She knows what loss feels like and no one on this planet wants to see anyone else experience that kind of anguish. No matter what your own religious belief is you shouldn't dismiss your moms story as if it's not possible just because you don't believe in ghosts. It is possible and I believe her. It makes me so sad to see you and your brothers not call or visit her very often. Please go visit her as much as you can because you will regret it one day and wish you could have that precious time back.

I believe her. She may have seen the man that went missing because she was so worried about him. It was a way to help her stop worrying. Showing her that he did pass on. Seeing that does not mean there's not a God. It just means there are mysteries to God and our existence that we shouldn't worry about but trust God. She's such a kind-hearted, strong woman and very connected with everyone and life around her. She will always be that way.❤

Oh dear, so much to say about this film and it’s not my place to say it. Only, dear son, please understand that your mom did her best to mother her children. Your younger brother needed all the love and attention he got as his life was short. Remember you are still able to access her love, even if its far away and less than you once remembered getting. Please call her more. Allow her her quirks. None of us know truly about death. And one day possibly your children will teach you what it means to mother. She seems a lovely person. Cherish her.

As a mom who has (still am ) suffered the loss of one of your children, l know the daily pain, numbness , confusion and terror your mother goes thru. I do not know any parent(s) that have ever thought of this happening .....who would want that kind of a thought in their mind?!? My son, Tyler, died from SIDS at just two-and-a-half -months old , 27 years ago this past September. He left behind a five year old brother, Logan (32 yrs.) and never met his little sister Angelynn (26 yrs) . On his 18th birthday, as lbwas preparing to bake his cake, he popped-in and whispered in my ear, " I love you, Mom." I cannot tell you the joy and agony l felt at that moment, nor would l ever want another parent to know this pain as it is gut-wrenching and changes you forever. My heart goes out to all who have suffered the loss of a child......

It’s called being an empath. And it’s NOT OUR FAULT. OR OUR CHOICE. Nor can we control it. Tho I haven’t watched news etc well, really ever...only because life has had enuff tragedy. If I did I wouldn’t ever forget what happened and to whom. My heart breaks for this woman. She is lovely and her sons are missing out on a beautiful spirit. Im sorry... this really upsets me. Also. I too have seen an apparition. My childhood home is haunted. Most of us have had one kind of experience or another. They are real. Doesn’t matter any if this. She is your mom regardless of how eccentric. You can tell how much she loves her kids. I hope this film helped you to resolve those feelings. She deserves to be adored by her sons. God speed.

When the son used the excuse of “promised dinner” at his own home while he is with his mother he rarely sees..my heart broke for her. What an absurd thing to say. I tried to like this. It wasn’t a film about your mother. It was a film about YOU and how you view your mother. You didn’t even begin to scratch the surface because your ego and child angst was in the way. Your mother has many, many levels and it seems like you’re stuck on just one. I hope you and your brothers get over yourselves and love the woman that has loved you your whole lives.
