I just love Judy Garland. So talented, but utterly destroyed by Louis Mayer, who cheered her up and spit her out for profit. She really should have won the Best Actress for A Star is Born in 55, bit it was given to Grace Kelly instead. Partly because the industry hated Judy and how difficult she was to work with, and partly because they thought Grace would be worth more in the long term. Karma got them, I guess. But not giving Judy that Oscar was imo the biggest mistake the Academy has ever made (which is really saying something!)

I have seen all these movies (except "Houseboat") and have all of them on DVD (except "Indiscreet" and "Houseboat"). Interestingly, "High society" is a remake of "The Philadelphia story" from 1940. And here's another fun fact for you. In "How to marry a millionaire", when Betty Grable's character arrives in Maine and comments music on the radio, and says it's Harry James. In my teens and 20s people were usually surprised by my classic movie knowledge, especially because i don't look the type (tattoos/piercings, grunge/rock style). Have you seen "Marty"? It's from 1955 and also a multi Oscar winner. Because of this movie, I always danced at least one song with men who would ask me at clubs so I wouldn't hurt their feelings! I do videos on my channel where we pair an old movie like these that have fiber arts like knitting, crochet, sewing, etc in them with a pattern that fits with the theme of the movie. Adorable list. Would love to see what are your favorite vintage musicals & 30s/40s stylish films! 🖤 I recommend you to watch "Roberta" (1935) with Astaire, Rogers, Scott, Dunne; it's so sweet, fashionable & filled with lovely songs and dance scenes! 🌸

I have to say I prefer the rom-coms of the 30s and 50s for a simple reason: they (mostly) have all these lovely 50s elements of beautiful hair, clothes, and makeup and great actors--maybe not so much the well-staged songs--but they also have the key missing ingredient in many of the 50s films: a meaningful message! Of course, the 50s films will throw in a basic message here or there, but mostly the focus seems to be on glamor, travel, and personal glorification, to be honest. In the 30s and 40s, life was much more serious, and so were (some of) the messages of the best rom-coms, often about ideals, even if they were just about what true love is and not settling for less. The emotions in 50s films often come across as artificial to me. I don't think I can get that same warm feeling I get at the end of It's a Wonderful Life from any of these 50s movies, except perhaps Roman Holiday (which is so bittersweet, ahhh!), probably because it's built on a 30s/40s-style storyline. I guess the rom-coms of the 30s and 40s could be said to be both dramas and rom-coms at the same time, while the 50s rom-coms are only that one thing. Do you know what I mean?

Hello Shirin, I hope you won’t mind my saying this, but your pronunciation is so good I don’t want you to get anything wrong! When you use the word ‘rebel’, you are pronouncing it as it is for the noun. However, for the verb ‘to rebel’, the emphasis is on the second syllable - ‘re-bel’. I hope this makes sense!? I love to hear your english speaking voice! Thank you so much for the film list, this has made us think of re-visiting these films again!
