The problem for me is there are no 60-600, 500f56 lens for Nikon at this time and the Sony 400f28 is hugely expensive, so I'm going to lose quit a bit of money when selling it. The Sony 200-600, I already relegated to my nephew who has an A7Rii. So when switching to Nikon gear, assuming I switch to native lens, I will not only not have the equivalents, and lose a lot of money in the process, I will not have the equivalents of both Sigma lens, which are awesome lens (well.. the 500f56 I have to run through a test series against my 400f28, which I use regularly with the x1.4 converter, to see if the sharpness and bokeh, and expected date is now mid-June). However, if I can restrict my purchases to the camera body batteries, fast cards and z-mount to e-mount converter, I have a way forward, in terms of future choice of system to advance with. It's kinda dipping my feet in Nikon waters, without having to dive right in. This is soemthing that I cannot do with Cannon, as the way they constructed the bodies, does not allow for a converter (the physics of light cannot be bent as much).

PS - I think that with the Sigma lens, I might have better luck with Nikon since as far as I know they did not limit their firmware to work with 15fps,, which is an infuriating thing Sony did.

I hope to see this on multiple mounts, but the F/5.6 is a good compromise, Noise reduction in post is getting better, high ISO performance is getting better (with a combination of software and hardware improvements) I honestly think Sigma right now has a good read on the market across mounts and are releasing lenses when it makes sense

This is the telephoto lens you can carry in the bag all the time... The 600mm f/4 is only when you know you go somewhere you'll absolutely need it ! It makes totally sense to me with a Sony alpha body !

Very interesting design, glad they managed to make it this compact for a 5.6 lens. F/5.6 is quite good, especially when compared to the lacklustre F/8 or F/11 offerings.

Would love to see this for Z mount and would be an instant pick up. Kudos to Sigma for making this small and affordable, yet with amazing quality. I would be interested to see if they can adopt their lens formulas to maybe a 600mm or longer even.

At 5.6 I think if you watch your background you can still get great separation. The smaller,lighter weight is enough to sell me. I will definitely invest in this lens.I already own the Sony 100-400 and at 5.6 at the long end I have no issues with it at all.

Hi I don’t know if you have the time to check it: what about the do called “focus breathing ? “ in other words : how close it is to 500mm at close focus ? What about the performance with objects that are very far away (low coverage of the sensor )? I hope you get a review copy for a longer time.

Matt what a heck of a lens that is! I wonder when comparison between the Nikon PF and the new Sigma will come out... anyway, even a Sony version can be used on the Nikon via the newest adaptor for Sony glass that seems working wonders... Yes, it'd be better to wait for a Z mount but when in extremis that option is more than viable imo.

I wish Nikon had made a 500 instead of the 400 4.5 which is also ultra light, but not enough range really. Strangely this lens would be more expensive where are the 500pf on the used market is a bargain

I think it’s amazing lens from Sigma, the price is reasonable, I am waiting it for Canon Rf , because I have 500mm f5.6 pf I am using it with adapter for Nikon Z9 , I think it’s so nice to have this lens with you for travel and use it in Bird’s park 😍, thank you so much my friend for sharing this awesome video 👌👌👌

Doubtful as Nikon only allowed Tamron to make its NikTam 17-28, 28-75 and 70-180. Only Tamron Z 150-500 / 35-150mm are the only third party AF lenses for Z (For the moment at least).

I think Nikon 400/4.5 is quite competitive and you can put a TC on it getting to 560mm f/6.3.

I have this lens over two months now ,using with my 33mpix a7cll ,and I its maybe the sharpest lens I ever had. I is maybe even better than Canon EF 500mm IS ll version which I had over ten years. Superb value

Thanks for the review, I was hoping it was as good as you have stated. The only reason I haven't put in an order so far is due to it not being able to be used with the teleconverters (even if Sigma came out with there own teleconverter I would grab that one). I love the combination of a 500 - 700mm for many of the birds, bears, whales and such that I shoot and would love to have it in that small and light package. I would likely get rid of my Canon gear completely since I'm keeping it for the 500 f/4 only at the moment.

You might have to wait another 5 years or so since Sony does not allowed third party lenses to design a lens that can use TCs? To protect its GM tele lenses’ sales. ZL-Mount is ok because Sigma is part of the L-Mount team. Although L-Mount AF not as fast as Sony.

I own the Sony A1, but if I got this lens it would probably pair best with my A7R IV, crop mode basically will act as a teleconver with still plenty of resolution to spare. Also because the lens is limited to 15fps I won't get the full potential out of the A1.

I think it's worth having even if you already have a 500mm f4 lens. If you are going to walk around the zoo all day in sunlight the f5.6 is a no brainer. If you're paying big bucks for an African safari and shooting at Golden hour, dawn and dusk, the faster lens is needed.

Very unlikely that Nikon will allow it onto Z mount. The rules seem to be very restrictive. Such an impressive lens, hopefully they bring out more of the similar patents they have.

It looks as sharp as the legendary Canon EF 400 MM f/5.6 L and adds 100MM to that! This is almost a stop faster than the Canon RF 100-500 f/4.5-7.1 L, so for wildlife photographers who want that reach with a lower ISO this could do the trick, *IF* it ever comes to RF mount that is. Well done Sigma!

Sigma should make an EF version with these optics. Then EF users could use it and RF users would have an end-around and Sigma would not have to pay royalties.

@@wingcreator I guess that most glass used on RF cameras today is EF. I guess that there are ten times as many EF cameras in use today as RF. If they make EF glass, they won't have to pay Canon anything. I am guessing if they do not make EF glass Canon will simply say "No!" or charge them through the nose for it. To me, it is the most logical move. Since the EF to RF converter is supported, any new glass made by Sigma will work without any penalty. So am I serious? Yes. Will they do it? Only if they are smart. What is the down side? See the article "Canon celebrates significant milestone with production of 150 million interchangeable RF and EF lenses" for reference about EF sales.

@@danncorbit3623 Sigma runs a modern lens company to make money! Why should it go backward and make EF just because Canon has a EF to RF adaptor? I have used Canon for 32 years, no point siting all the EF glory! Yes, 10 years ago, EF has been joked as the biggest third party lens es for Sony FE. RF is a greedy system! As long as it shuts it from third party lenses companies, only its users suffers!

I would *rather* an f/4, but I don't think I could really justify the spend with how little tele work I do now. So this looks like a good option imo.

Compared to the prime alternatives it looks cheap. Compared to the zoom alternative it is expensive... i use the Tamron 150-500 but i find myself going to 150mm to find my target a lot of times and shooting at 500mm just after. I really wonder how people are doing run and gun wildlife with a 500mm. how do you find your target fast ?

aw man, hard to say. Optically I thin it is superior and so compact... but its kind of duplicating. I would check your metadata and see how often you are shooting aruond 500mm to see if worth it.

As a Sony shooter (wildlife), and not having been so enamored with the A1 (lens: Sony: 400f28, 200-600, 80-200F28; Sigma: 60-600, 500mmF56) I'm debating if I should try out the Z8 with lens adapter for the e-mount lens get the A9iii, or just wait until sony comes up with the next gen A1. What are your thoughts? If you sould examimne the difference of using a sony lens on a nikon Z8 or 9, it would be of great value for me.

1 - A shorter wake-up time, 2 - A better tracking (I had better time with my A9 and A7RIV than my A1), 3 - Sony is taking a "pay to unlock" future route to their firmware, while Nikon doesn't - and it seems to constantly address its audience needs, which is not the case with Sony.

If you’re going to stick with Sony lenses, I’d personally stick with Sony body too. If Sony isn’t working, then I’d look to move the whole kit over.

@@mattgranger As I mentioned before: (1) Much faster wake-up times, (2) better tracking and focusing (tired any "sticky"level - to the same effect - not so sticky), (3) the pre-capture I might use,, although I'm a RAW shooter, and it's currently only in JPG in Nikon (hopefully it rectifies the situation through larger/faster buffer and some software tweaks).

I wish a lens like this existed for fuji, they made a 200mm f2 (~300mm eqv ff) but it was gigantic, cost too much, barely sold and probably ended up scaring fuji and third party makers from making big primes for the system :( I'm happy being on fuji but some of sigma's recent releases really makes the grass look green over at sony lately.

For DSLR f4 or even f2.8 was the way to go. For Mirrorless systems f5.6 is perfectly acceptable considering what you save on money and weight!

I think Nikon may allow this one. They currently don't have a Z mount 500mm prime. 400/600/800 only. As long as a lens doesn't clash with Nikon's own line up I think they're ok with it. Just look at the tamron 150-500.

Hard to say, but so far Tamron is only allowed to help built the cheaper OEM Z 17-28, 28-75 and 70-180 2.8 (it is a clever move instead of Canon shutting out RF AF 3rd party lenses). Keeping the Nikon name but still charge a relatively higher price than allowed Tamron to make its own. Recently Tamron finally produced Tamron 35-150 2.8Z. I am guessing Tamron might have some kind of agreement with Nikon (might enough have an exclusive right to be the only third party Z lenses company for at least 2 years?)

No debate. It’s a fantastic lens. Especially with denoise built into Lightroom, an extra stop of light is not worth 2-3 times the price and weight. Unless you are loaded with $$$ and for commercial clients and can afford it, there’s no reason IMO.

@@mattgranger I think they already know it. Sony & Nikon sales are increasing significantly. Their non-L RF lenses are absolutely garbage. It's getting darker and darker (F6.3, F7.1, F8, F9, F11) & relying too much on correction. They pushing their customers to get expensive L lenses.

The Nikon is a lot cheaper if you buy used. The lens is 1500-2000 used if you know where to look. Though I do think it looks like a winner😊

I hope it kicks Sony out of complacency. Their long lens line up is dreadful compared to Nikon. Sony assume everyone will cough up big money for big GM lenses. I really hope thay this lens sells well and that there is more to come.

Nikon can considering they have made some weird lenses as well some useful lenses on tele end for Nikon F mount. 200-500mm f/5.6, and it was cheaper than this, Nikon 500mm f/5.6 just slightly bigger but they can make it smaller for the Z Mount, Nikon 400mm f/4.5 for Z Mount. Nikon can make it, but it’ll be expensive because of the market, and better build quality to justify the price.

Nikon made a 500 5.6 of similar size weight and quality 6+ years ago. 600mm 6.3 is same just a tad longer and similar weight. What are you talking about lol.

@@livejames9374 Not the weight but size, Sigma Lens is more compact compared to Nikon, but if they were to redesign that for the Z mount, it will be smaller and even more lighter.
