It's really difficult for me to pick out my favorite whole chapters but I can tell you my favorite moment: Wyman Manderly's monologue to Davos in ADWD. When he says "...and my son is HOME." I get chills no matter how many times I read it.

@@Hungblackboibasically, wyman manderly pretended that he was loyal to the Bolton’s and Lannisters and that he captured and executed Davos but in reality he hid Davos and explained to him that he hated the Bolton’s because he knew they were lying about the red wedding. He only went along with them because his last living son Wylis was captured by the Lannisters in the first book and was still being held at harrenhal. However pretending to execute Davos finally convince the Lannisters that he was loyal and they sent wylis back to him. When he says to Davos “the north remembers, and the mummer’s farce is almost done. My son is home.” He is saying that he has no reason to keep pretending to be loyal and can start moving towards the downfall of the Bolton’s, starting with the deaths of the freys in white harbor and sending Davos to find rickon stark as a figure for the north to rally around

I never expected to enjoy Theon or "Reek" chapters that much, But his chapters in DWD just had this eerie haunted feeling that left me so sad and still stick in my memory. Reek silently roaming the halls and the Godswood of Winterfell, remembering what Theon was doing there as a boy, now grown-up hated and disgusted by all the men who know him.. Not to mention the whole murder-mystery subplot and planning his escape man those chapters are incredible

For me it has to be Catelyn VII, ASoS. Not so much because of the shock of the Red Wedding but rather because of its depiction of grief stricken mind, swinging between paranoia and melancholy. It's truly off-putting seeing a character so caring and determined as Catelyn Stark go through the hell of losing all of his loved ones, as she clings to whatever slip of hope she has left; which at this point in the saga, it all boils down to Robb, her firstborn, making it out alive of the Five Kings War. The way I see it, Robb's death being the last straw is perfect, the final tragedy that breaks this devoted wife and loving mother, sending her spiraling down into madness. I never stop being amazed by the morbidity provoked by the entire massacre, but nothing tops the depiction of Catelyn's slow descent from sorrow, into despair and finally, insanity. The poetic strokes used to highlight this fall make it hands-down one of the best first person narrations I've ever read.

@@chrisrubin6445 How did I never think of that? By the time it gets to Bran, I'll bet that's one of Ned's classic "dad speeches" that he's given to Jon and Robb before, and possibly even Theon, too. Now I'm thinking of Robb's ultimately doomed war, and wondering how many times he remembered his father telling him those same words. Tyrion's first trial by combat chapter, when Bronn steps up! "Tyrion begins reeling off every "crime" he has ever committed dating back to his childhood, including stealing a servant girl's clothes, filling his uncle's boots with goat feces and letting a squire take the blame, and masturbating into some turtle stew which, he hopes, his sister ate. He continues to deny their charges against him, however. Furious, Lysa orders him returned to the sky cells. Before he can be led away, Tyrion demands a trial by combat." Loved it! 🤣

This may seem like a hot take, but my favorite chapter is probably Bran III ADWD. Bran is nowhere near my favorite character in the series but his plotline is extremely engaging for me especially in ADWD. In a world full of sprawling cities and immersive locations, Bloodraven’s cave feels the largest to me, with every description providing insight towards the overall story and every line of dialogue building the history that I couldn’t have ever thought of. The show fumbled the bran and long night plotlines so bad but Bran’s few chapters in ADWD show me that George is going to do something amazing

I have seen some criticism of Aegon and Jon Con being introduced. Introducing main character level people in Book 5 of 7. Characters that won't affect the greater narrative of the others. But to me, Aegon made Dance my favorite book. Tyrion had too many chapters, but rereading them knowing who Griff and Young Griff actually are makes them incredible. Seeing Tyrion use his intelligence to piece together small hints. Seeing Aegon and Jon being flushed out and real Characters before they set out of their conquest. I'm in the increasingly small camp of fans who think Aegon is legitimate. Rhaegar is my favorite non pov character of the series. I'm also a sucker for pretty blonde guys, which doesn't help.

I find it fascinating how a "new" character is someone's favourite. Even though we don't "meet" him until ADWD, his character has been there in the background for some of the very most pivitol events. Reading JonCon feels like no-clipping through a wall in a game to access a new area. Instead of taking the long way around in some aspects of the story, JonCon lets us jump right into the heart of topics that we have had extemely little information of for a long time. At first i thought you were just trying to pick a less commonly discussed character to be fresh. But your reasoning and arguements are very sound, as such I understand now why you hold his chapters in such high esteem.

Although there is so much outstanding writing in this series that it's near impossible to pick a "best" chapter, my own favourite chapters are maybe kind of odd. I adore the prologue and the first chapter of Game of Thrones more than the opening of pretty much any other series of sci-fi or fantasy novels out there. Their purpose as openings is to draw the reader in, and make us want to know more, and there are virtually perfect in that respect. They also have some really beautiful writing that still manages to stuff a huge amount of information about this world, its people, and some of the main characters into the reader's brain without it feeling like an infodump. Instead, it feels natural, and leaves you wanting to know more. Those two chapters should be taught in writing classes as perfect examples of a wonderfully strong opening. This is all just my own opinion of course, but hey, they've been sucking us in since 1996, right?

i am a prologue girlie, they’re my favorites overall for how well they tell a contained story - AGOT and ACOK have my absolute favorites, and ASOS’ epilogue as well. I need to reread the whole series to pick out main POV chapters, but I’ve always liked Dany’s chapters in AGOT, they have a good character arc and i’ve just always liked Dany. Also, Sansa chapters from ACOK, Arya in ASOS, and Jaime in like. any book.

My favorite chapter is a three way tie between Jon's last chapter in ADWD, The Iron Captain chapter from AFFC, and Tyrion's last Blackwater chapter in ACOK. These chapters respectively feature the climax of my favorite hero in the series, the introduction of my favorite villain in the series, and my favorite action sequence of the series, which also features my favorite POV character in the series.

It might not stay this way forever, but on my last read Arya in early ACOK was my favorite. The feeling of helplessness in this horrible situation, and yet still having the power to take small acts to make it a little bit better (but not much).

I have a feeling that JonCon's good intentions will only backfire on everyone, and it all ends with his breakdown. I have a feeling that Jon was on the fringes of Rhaegar's trust circle and simply simping so hard he didn't notice that his best friend crush was besties with other people. He doesn't seem to know about Rhaegar's beliefs (the Prince that was Promised) or what went down with Lyanna Stark. Rhaegar seemingly rode with 5 men to take her, and JonCon was not involved or knowledgeable. I don't think he consciously prevents any doubt about Aegon from setting in, but I do believe that his subconscious is desperately clinging to this story being true. He compares Aegon to Rhaegar even with different coloured eyes. But it's been near 20 years since he last saw his Prince (probably when he rode off with Arthur and Oswell as later JonCon was exiled before Rhaegar came back). I think he is looking at Aegon with biased eyes. And whether Aegon is ever revealed as true or false matters less than his almost definite death. Jon has the potential to spread greyscale and to be triggered by the bells of King's Landing. In whatever way his world implodes, it will be explosive.

For me the best chapter is the last sansa chapter in A feast for crows, when little finger explains the arryn family tree to half the chapter until the final plot twist where its revealed that he is planning to wed her to the heir of the vale. It is just a lot of buildup which feels kinda out of place and pointless expostition until the last few lines where you are just left in awe of the genius of littlefinger.

I like Danys first chapter of ASOS, nothing much happens but it’s just her chilling on her three boats. It’s nice to see how far she had come in just those 3 books, literally reborn from the ashes with nothing and now chillin with dragons on boats

I love asoiaf. It would be so hard to pick a favorite chapter. almost every chapter in the first two books are bangers. The first prologue chapter, Neds conversation with Varys in the black cells chapter, second prologue chapter where we meet stannis, Cats chapter where she tries to talk sense into stannis and Renly, stannis taking Storms End. Red wedding, Tyrion’s trial, purple weddings, renlys peach. I’d be here all day. If George finishes the book it might be considered the greatest fantasy series of all time. There should be a whole semester in literature class at schools dedicated to first reading LOTRs (advanced kids also read the hobbit and Silmarillion) then a deconstruction of the fantasy tropes with ASOIAF (adv kids also read Dunk and egg and fire and blood 1&2).
