This is a very exciting video for me personally. It's always good to see the film community come up with something new. In this case, it's not a new film stock but rather the opportunity to shoot an already existing film stock in a way that it was meant to be. CineStill helped us all to have easy access to Kodak motion picture films but the removal of the remjet layer can cause problems and the use of C41 chemicals is not ideal to get the best results and this is where Silbersalz35 steps in. In this video, I am sharing with you what's it all about.
Hope you enjoy the episode, see you in the next video! :)

The film with scanning is a really super price. However, for those in the USA there is 32 Euro shipping and 19Euro VAT. That adds to the price and makes it expensive. However, I saw when ordering two packs of 4 that the shipping price stays the same so there is a slight gain here. The people are Silbersalz are amazingly helpful and respond to email superfast. Before I ordered two 4-packs, I sent several emails asking questions and wondering about time, processing scenarios, etc. They always answered my questions even though I had not yet ordered anything. I'm eager to get my order and then try the film. Silbersalz is a great company to work with and they are eager to interact with photographers. If you are in doubt, give them a chance.

They use express shipping that makes it costly but also much more reliable. Like you've said it makes more sense if you order a bunch of rolls and not just a single one.
@weisserth
@weisserth 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, same thought here. Why do US customers even have to pay German VAT to begin with?! VAT should only apply on national sales, not exported international sales. When you buy stuff from overseas, you will be liable to import tax - that should not be applied on top of VAT from Germany.

Hi Robin, great video! I just got back the first scans from Silbersalz a few days ago and I totally share your experience. I have shot the Kodak Vision 3 200T and 500T before, processing it at home in C-41. The results compared to the development in ECM2 are not even close. The results from Silbersalz are way better in detail, color and of course it is very convenient. I will for sure get more of their stock!

Was wondering when someone would do this again (there was a similar cine/ecn2 schemes in the sixties to nineties). Prices are not too bad and the results will be better than Cinestill. I wonder why Kodak doesn’t do something like this themselves?! It would be very straight forward, with them also getting the profits from processing. Doubt anyone is going to get on their back today (Kodachrome monopoly trial).

the_real_sir_robin Vision 3 (technology from which is also used in Portra 400) more or less solves, or at least alleviates to a great degree the problem with low sensitivity of film compared to digital. Which other than perceived cost and immediacy, is really the only problem with film.

Just ordered 8 rolls of Silbersalz35 500T. I've always been a big fan of Cinestill 800t but the inconsistency and light leaks with that film are sometimes really annoying. When thinking in series and books you sometimes can't afford these issues. Really curious how my films will perform. The only question I have is with daytime shooting. Cinestill looks pretty okay during the day rated at 400 or 500. Will it be the same or do I add an orange filter? Take care

Let me see if I understand this correctly. This company offers bulk loaded Kodak Vision film with the remjet still on the film and they process in ECN-2 and scan on a high end scanner for you. From what you're saying, leaving the remjet on and processing in ECN-2 gives a better look than processing Kodak Vision film with the remjet removed and using C-41. Would it be cheaper to just bulk load myself? I'm in New York and maybe finding a company in America would be cheaper for me to process ECN-2. Thanks for enlightening this idea about vision3 film!

Here in Germany is another lab that do high res scans and the price for one roll, develop and scan in c41 is 20€ only for the service. Means plus a roll of cinestill for example, which is about 10€. They bulk roll and sell true Kodak Vision film (with remjet) and develop it in an ECN-2 process. Also, the USA company’s scans are great TIF files. I did a 35mm 8x10 print of 50D at a local store it fooled the tech because he thought it was a digital image with a “special look.” By the way, great production as usual. Robin, super late question, but did you use a 85B filter on those Silbersalz 500T shots in daylight? Or did you correct them afterwards! Thanks in advance :)

Thanks for sharing! I wonder what happens when they ship a 500T film abroad. It may be checked by X-Ray when you get the film, and again when you ship it for develop :\
@FantasticOtto
@FantasticOtto 5 жыл бұрын
Does the package include a return label? Or do you have to arrange shipping to the lab? In that case you're looking at at least 40-50 euros for shipping back and forth if you include the negative return.

i already heard about this project, it's really interesting and i'm happy you did a video about this. I'll buy a pack from them but I would know little bit more about bleach bypass? What does it means? How does it affect to negatives? Thank you
@therealsirrobin
@therealsirrobin 5 жыл бұрын
Bleach Bypass will give you a more contrasty look, with more grain and muted colors. But your exposure has to be spot on, like on slide film. If you wanna know more about it there should be websites out there that can probably explain it better than I just did. Have never tried it and probably won't do it.

First off - Thanks for sharing this to us and Second off- amazing video recap man! Loved this. What films did you try so far, looked like in the video roughly 500t & 200t ? Those Reds with the 200t were gorgeous. Also I noticed a disclaimer under the "Shooting" says " We recommend to overexpose by plus one stop." Did you by chance try that out?

Hey thanks for your impressions with this film. I am also interested and downloaded some sample photos from their website. When looking at the photos at 100% i had the impression that they had been "blown up" a little bit. On the website from Blackmagic they say the native resolution of their latest scanner is 4096 x 3072, so something around 12megapixels. Do you know how the guys from Silbersalz achieve the 20megapixels and what is your impression of the resolution of your scans?
@maxjanko
@maxjanko 5 жыл бұрын
Just asked the guys from silbersalz about the scanning resolution. It’s different to the scan resolution in the tech specs because the exposures on the film are bigger than usually in motion pictures. Due to the bigger area on the film they can achieve the higher resolution.

Interesting. I've never shot tungsten film. I was under the impression that if you shot it in sunlight outside it would give you a blue image. I was also told that you had to use a special filter outdoors. But that doesn't appear to be the case. Did you have to do something special? Your images look normal except that the red is vivid.
@therealsirrobin
@therealsirrobin 5 жыл бұрын
I've never used a filter when shooting 200t or 500t and you can easily correct it in post. A filter will eat up one stop of light which can be a problem.

Wow.. The film was finally returned to me from Germany.. I mailed my 4 rolls of film to you on October 1, 2019.. German customs received the film on the 10th of October 2019.... The film remained there until the end of December 2019, at which time it was returned to New Jersey Post office USA on January 3, 2020... The amazing postal system then took until January 23, 2020 to return it to me.....

I tried them when they were brand new to the market, also had some light leaks but thought that was my fault. File size is a problem indeed. My 50d zip was so large I had trouble downloading it as my hard drive was still on FAT so a 5GB file could not be saved 😔 and the file size is to big to be saved to a free Dropbox... tungsten films (250/500) looked good filtered and like shit without filter and all films needed more light, so all were a bit under exposed.
