I love your work, I think the format is great ! Your thorough-and-fun-and-so-lively!- analysis actually help me understand why I got totally hooked by this show (which was unlikely, I was just curious of what had been done this time around with the Nancy Drew character I knew - and had loved- from childhood reading, the plan was to watch episode 1 and be done, and it just happened that I watched the 4 seasons before I knew I was). I really hope you still plan on sharing part 2 soon, I am really curious as to what you will make of season 3 & 4 ...

Back to you with some thoughts after I watched your video again ! I am thinking literature. - Just like you, I love the part where in order to defeat the Aegleca, the team has to deliver lines of the love letters by heart, not just by reading them. I definitely see an echo here of Bradbury's novel "Fahrenheit 451" in which in order to save books & literature from total erasure, the characters have to learn by heart sections of every book ever written. The same "by heart", meaning feeling literature (the letters) and speaking it, brings Odette back to life, erase the Aegleca (the erasing authority in Bradbury's novel) & save the lives of Nancy and her friends. Knowing, sharing and shouting literature saves lives in this episode. Which is taking it a nice big step up & further from Episode 1.03, in which literature is also a key : it buys Nick a future, literally, for once he's solved Tiffany's riddles based on their common love & insight of classic books (the first of of which, The Count of Monte Cristo, echoes Nick's jail and redemption experience), he gets the fortune she's left him. I kind of link these two episodes. - And further on Odette. I have been wondering about this choice of a first name for her ? I don't know if you have some clues as to this choice of a name, but safe for any other explanation I don't get, the first thing is that it strikes me as weirdly out of place : Odette was a European first name in the Middle-Ages (years 1100), got a revival in the 1910-20s, but seams completely out of place as an 18th/ early 19th century name. Except that again... it is such a literary name. For the French viewer that I am, the first name "Odette", any Odette, is necessarily associated with that character from "Swann's way", one of the most famous French novels of the early 20's century (do we know any other Odette ?): in the novel, Odette is a mystery all along. By marriage, she becomes Odette Swann, while in the series, "Lamar", Odette's last name, means "pond" in French ("la mare). From "Swann" to "Pond", definitely, Odette is a creature of literature & water, deep down to her name. I do believe that this was thought over by the writers, but yet I can't help but thinking that at some point, fictional characters sometimes overtake the writers and have more substance than what was written for them. I think it does happen quite a lot in Nancy Drew (less sure about that in season 4, though), and I just love that.

I love Fahrenheit 451! Great reference there, I'm definitely going to spend some time thinking about the connection to Nick and his earlier episode. Thank you for pointing me towards the French novel! I hadn't heard of Swann's Way before, but after looking into it it, in addition to the things you pointed out, it sounds like the character of Odette is in a marriage to a guy who doesn't see or appreciate her for who she is, and she doesn't love. And the general novel has themes of triggering memories. As an American, when I think of 'Odette' I think of Swan Lake. In that story she's also under a transformation curse, which can only be broken by love. The one who promises to love her also ends up (accidentally) breaking that promise, and poor Odette gets a tragic ending. Although it does sound like modern productions have started giving it a happy ending. I'm guessing that's what the writers were drawing from, but I'm definitely not counting out the novel either. Thank you so much for your thoughtful comments, I've really appreciated them!

God, I miss this show. I agree with a lot of your favorite episodes actually. Also was laughing a lot at your little commentaries in text. I do think that the fight before the Agleaca in S2E5 was justified, but they could have sold it better? Idk, they were all freaking out about probably dying and turned on Nancy in searching for a scape goat. Which, yeah made them crappy friends in that moment, but was also kinda realistic. Final thoughts: -Grant supremacy -Would have loved My 2 Dads as little wepisodes, also the bit with the kirchen crew killed me. Robbed of a bottle episode -I really didn't enjoy the Bobbsey twins, but I'm glad you did - these absolutely unhinged moments where the cast show their comedic timing are always a favorite - Loved the lust dress episode, this was just so different

If I remember correctly Bess and George are cousins in books. I don’t think Ace and Nick are even exist in the books. Also Carson Drew is Nancy’s real dad in the books.

Right about Bess, George, and Carson! Nick is in the books, but he goes by Ned there. Ace is odd because he does seem to be a completely new character, but they drop hints he's actually a Hardy Boy. 👀
