Fujifilm’s film simulations are incredible. They’re one of the main ways they've stolen me and countless photographers from other systems! I'll be sharing with you my three favorite film simulations, why they’re so magical, and why you should try using them instead of raw files.

A very nice video! I hope your channel grows, as you have a lot of good information for people. In addition to digital, I shoot a lot of film. Most of it slides. With slides, you get what you shoot at the time, not a lot of exposure latitude. I liken it to shooting jpegs. You control the moment. Some people that shoot raw, always have post processing in the back of their mind, and as a result look at a file as something to deal with later. Shooting film simulations in jpeg lets me get the shot right, with the look that I want without having to spend hours on a computer. After all, that's what analogue photography was all about.

thank you i appreciate that a lot! i like how you summarized that, “control of the moment”. also too, when you said raw shooting sort of creates this idea of “i’ll do this later” that i too don’t always like myself. like you said, it captures the essence of analogue and creates a more enjoyable experience

5:18 resonates with me so much. I've missed one too many shots trying to be cavalier about being a Manual Mode Warrior or hyper focusing on the wrong things in the given moment. All of these cameras y'all have invested in are TOO good not to let them do the heavy lifting most of the time. I promise no one will care about the settings if the image does not stand on its own. Great video, Doriyan!

100% ! I stopped shooting in RAW format some time ago, and it feels so much more enjoyable! I don't have the time or energy to go through tons of pictures to colour-grade. Plus my Canon camera's standard colours are fantastic right out of the box, and I've noticed that Lightroom's Canon profiles are a bit off, they're always a bit more brownish than they're supposed to. I don't bother working on white balance, shadows or highlights anymore, the JPGs are already plenty well-balanced and the better colours in JPG make up for the narrower dynamic range. Now I can spend more time taking pictures and less time staring at a computer. What a relief!

The internet is full of "advice" saying that you must shoot RAW and you are not a real photographer if you shoot JPEG. It is utter nonsense. RAW has its place, but the obsession with shooting RAW is bizarre. Getting it right in-camera is harder than snapping away knowing that you can fix your shots in Lightroom. Since moving to Fujifilm I have shot JPEG and I am somebody that would spend hours in front of a computer processing RAW files from my dSLR. I feel that my photography has improved as a result of concentrating on composition, light and colour at the time the shot was taken, not later on a computer. Other camera manufacturers have in-camera profiles, but Fujifilm appear to "get it".

another winner Doriyan cheers. I very rarely use RAW these days, I like to nail the shot in camera not in LR. I love the way jpgs come out of the F. I've used the X100 series since the original and only recently have I tried the film sims. I'm loving the acros, the Velvia and my last effort was with classic chrome which I love. The absolute beauty of this camera system is it's a shooters camera out there doing it not in there editing it. Great vid again mate.

thank you paul 🙏🏾 i think the whole “RAW is the way” wave from a few years ago made people think that jpeg, on any system, is inferior and that’s simply not the case. the simulations have shown even further that jpeg is not only as usable as RAW, but even can be more fun to use in a lot of cases. thanks for watching!

you aren’t able to in a “screenshot” sort of way, but since many fuji cameras record in 4k (and now 6k), grabbing a frame from a video could potentially look pretty good! sony and ricoh cameras have their own versions of color profiles, but neither look as good or “filmic” is fuji if you ask me. good luck!

Dorian I recently realized when I use in camera simulations, shooting both RAW and JPEG, that Capture 1 does not recognize the sims as part of the EXIF data. It processes the image with the simulation, but by looking at the RAW file data there is no indication of which one I used. Therefore, I am really better off just using JPEG only with sims in-camera, or doing the simulations in post. Does that make sense? 🤔 FYI, just recently found you and did subscribe - enjoy the straight forward nature of your work. Keep it up! 👍🌞

The futile tries of the digital pixel and screen peepers to imitate analog film are ridiculous. If you want real colors, authenticity instead of fake, you have to shoot film and stop pretending. Honest shooting without screen and multi automatic settings will let you grow as photographer. You stay more in the scene without starring on the screen every moment. Therefore you don't miss the right moments and get better shots. Film photos are sooooo much better than digital ones. The colors, the grain, the mood, the natural look and the actual paper-print keep the good memories. The digital photos on the hard disk got forgotten, inaccessible or lost within time.
@doriyancoleman
@doriyancoleman 3 жыл бұрын
appreciate you watching olympus. there’s certainly a multitude of ways someone can grow as a photographer, and to say film is pretending is a bit limiting. surely photography reached incredible heights through film, but it doesn’t make autochrome or pictorial any less real. the most convenient means necessary of consistently getting shots is how i’d advise anyone to photograph, or even shoot a basketball, and plenty of contact sheets / film photos have been lost as well. perhaps if they had digital, those photos would be on a website somewhere lol. appreciate the comment!

Olympus, those are some beautiful words and your passion for film absolutely shows. However, as a film and digital photographer myself- I cannot disagree more about how film’s aesthetic je ne sais quoi and slower process automatically makes the photo better. That gatekeeping elitist mentality only serves to stagnate the creation of good images. Good photographs stand on their own no matter what medium, not because of the color interpretation and chemical processing of the film stock that was shot. I love film as much as the next person but it is not objectively better than digital. Garry Winogrand, who shot a roll of film walking down a block, would have loved to have a digital camera in his hands that would equal to a thousand rolls of film to shoot for the whole day. Would Vermeer’s paintings be better if he chose to paint on another specific surface or use a different series of brushes? I digress but you get the point. TL;DR: A bad photo will always be a bad photo on film and digital.

I’d argue that in a lot of ways, film is a crutch. People such as yourself will often give a pass to a bad photo, because it’s shot on film. I also think the romanticism of the medium is getting old. Film is still popular mainly because of nostalgia. Point blank, period. One day, the current look of digital will also be looked at with nostalgia. Will these same arguments be made against whatever will replace our current digital cameras? Likely. Keep that in mind.
