@@RetroGameCorps Another great summary for newcomers and seasoned alike. One thing you could mention are primary and secondary units. Having a main gaming device and an accessory device. Sort of like playing your PS2 at home and PSP on the go, but more like having a bulky x86 for indoors which isn't replaced but complimented by a small ARM for outdoors. For me it's between two different types. Indoors/backpack/x86: Cheapest SteamDeck, or Fastest ROG Ally, or most expensive GPD Win-Max-2 are the standouts. Outdoors/pocket/ARM: Smallest RG353m, or faster RG405m, or the most functional Retroid Pocket 3+ are the standouts. Mix any one from either category, and you'll be having a great experience regardless. Be it the most budget option or the most expensive one. If you go with the RP3+ it almost acts like a second phone, which gives you the bonus option of using an iPhone, to cover both App ecosystems. And if you go with the GPD Win-Max-2, you can potentially forgo buying a Laptop as it makes for some sort of substitute, potentially being a (all-in-one device) useful benefit. Things worth mentioning in videos or summaries like these.

Handheld gaming is making a comeback and I am so glad. It is no longer jus Nintendo now. Valve and others have entered the fray and it makes me happy. When I was younger I wish I had something like this to be honest, and now that I'm older I really appreciate handhelds now and then. The Steamdeck is mostly what I need for emulation and pc lvl games, but I just got the abernic 35xx for gameboy and gameboy advance as well! Thank you for your recommendations. The steamdeck filled a niche I didn't know I needed. 😅

As always I really like that you emphislze which kind of usecase fits to which device. I also totally agree that between RP3+ and Steam Deck in the region between 200 and 300 (and in my opinion even 400) bucks there is nothing that justifies paying more than Rp3+ or RG405M. This will change when 100% GC, Wii, PS2 Emulation will come to devices between 150 and 250 bucks.

I was able to nab an RG505 a couple weeks ago for 135 bucks. Even if it's sort of the red-headed stepchild of the T618 set of devices, I'm very pleased and surprised with its performance. The oled screen pops in spite of the lower resolution, and the in-line shoulders aren't nearly as uncomfortable as I feared they might be. The RP3+ is probably still the easier recommend on account of the overall ergonomics, screen resolution, and HDMI out, but there's really no terrible choice with that chip in that price range.

I love my RG505. I'd bought the RP3 (non-plus), and while I also really liked it, I just preferred the chunkiness of the 505, and the OLED screen made the games look fantastic. The GammaOS update was phenomenal for offering basically free power (stock OS had Dragon Force II only hitting 60 FPS using frameskip, Gamma OS had no frame skip at normal power profile at 60 FPS flawlessly), along with fixing the screen sharpness, and I absolutely do not regret my purchase at all. By all means, the RP3+ is a great purchase, but I think the 505 is, at this stage, a little underrated.

Lots of focus on those in line shoulder buttons in comparisons, but not enough focus on those start/select and volume button locations on the RP3. Both devices have their flaws and it's going to come down to personal preference between which flaw you can endure the most.

I totally agree! The clamshell is one of my personal favorites, too. I always worry about handhelds with exposed screen and sticks/buttons will get possibly damaged during transit somewhere. That is one reason I think the DS/3DS line just had great designs and I never worried about things getting damaged (well, unless you dropped it). Though, I would just want to make sure the hinges were sturdy so there would be little risk of snapping.

Yep. Right now the only option is the Pocket Flip. There is the GPD Win Mini coming, but I doubt we'll see that in people's hands before this holiday season. I owned the Win 2, and it was pretty nice. Still not happy they went with those tiny sticks instead of some good sliders, but you can't have everything I guess. If you could I'd want sliders like the pocket flip and instead of a d pad it would have a click stick like on the old neo geo products.

I decided just to mod a 3DS and Vita and even over a decade old, way more reliable than my Anbernic. I did use your link to get a Miyoo Mini + for prime day because if this dies at least I can use Amazons return policy
@umamifan
@umamifan 11 ай бұрын
Yep. The only time I'll buy any of them is if and only if it's coming from a retailer with an actual return policy that will side with the buyer in most cases. They can't pull their BS on those platforms if you know how the TOS works. So for Amazon and eBay, they have to play nice. Anywhere else, they'll be very anti-consumer.

@@umamifan Good to know incase I decide to take the plunge on anything else. Was trying to be supportive of channel and use affiliate links. Can’t say I love the Mini + as much as the 35XX but at least it can take a charge without dying and has wifi for retro achievements. I’m a bit baffled how people can play with the original Mini. I’ve got small hands and I don’t find the Mini + the most comfortable, I couldn’t imagine my thumbs touching while hitting right on the D Pad and the Y button for most games

Really appreciate this. I’ve been looking at getting a retro handheld for years and am always stuck in analysis paralysis because there are so many options at so many price points with so many pros and cons. I ended up using an old Galaxy S9 with an 8bitdo Pro 2 and phone clip. Not the most elegant or pocketable solution. But ergonomic and surprisingly powerful. That said, I’m looking more and more at a Steam Deck. I just worry about making that investment with so much always coming down the pipeline.

@@lucykaede5863 If you have a dock to attach a keyboard, mouse and monitor than it works absolutely fine for long working sessions. The embedded keyboard is usable only for small writing needs. It works great for PC and emulator gaming. I'd not recommend for casual browsing and video streaming, because for these scenarios, the average smartphone is much better. They have better battery, most likely will have a better screen technology and can easily adapt for orientation changes.

As far as the mid-tier option, I actually think that the RG353PS is a better choice than the VS, if you are going to be playing a system where the sticks might actually be relevant then the extra comfort of the horizontal device just makes it a better form factor. Think you are spot on with the other winning pairs though and thumbs up for yet another helpful and informative video on what can be a somewhat confusing market with the speed of releases from so many of these companies.

My favorite is still the Retroid Pocket 2 plus. Amazing bang for the buck. The fact that a handful of my favorite PS2 and GameCube games can be played on something under $100 is insane to me and I'm really excited for the upcoming update. As cool as the RP3+ is, I still like the 2+ more for the portability of it-- I just really wanted real analog sticks with R3 and L3 capability. Unless another system comes out with perfect PS2 and GameCube gameplay for a majority of their libraries, I think I'll stick with this little guy and save up for a Steam Deck.

Interesting. I am going to get the rg353m for portability even though I can get more power for less money if I buy the Retroid3+. My reasoning for getting the rg353m over the retroid3+ is because I need the best device that can fit in my tiny work uniform pockets. I'm glad that someone agrees with me! Once you have a steam deck, if you don't plan on bringing the retroid around, then you might as well sell it
@ekinteko
@ekinteko 11 ай бұрын
@@BrentonBold This. It's not about the specs on a sheet or theoretical aspects. It's about the overall experience in a real-world scenario. For MOST people the largest device they can fit into their pocket is the RP3+ which makes it the most common recommendation. If you have smaller pockets, the RG405m and RG353m become the next options. And if your pockets are even smaller (women's apparel), then there's really nothing good/great (RGnano, PowKiddy V40, Anbernic RG280v) to recommend but to use a purse. With a purse, in which case you can now bring larger devices. For men, it's usually toting a satchel or backpack. In those circumstances, it's almost always better to stow away the Valve SteamDeck or ASUS ROG Ally. But again, there are small nitpicks that people need to consider for their own personal use-case. Some niche device maybe a better option for them.

I think the size and form factor along with the power and capabilities is the sweet spot for me, although the price certainly hits you hard but as you said it's an investment. I think Oculink really opens up the x86 handheld platform and at those price points gives you much more expandabilty and value in use case, over just being an overpriced emulation device that will otherwise feel outdated in a year. Retroid3+ is great no doubt price and performance. However, the size is what I call a hybrid size (big but just small enough to maybe be pocketable). A person in this comment section is going to sell his Retroid3 because he takes a smaller, less powerful emulator around and plays his steam deck at home. Sense you already have a steam deck, be sure if Retroid3 size is appropriate for your lifestyle. If not, you might want a less powerful smaller device instead like the ones mentioned in this video or my personal favorite the rg353m.

I've been curious about this for a while since I wanted to get back into my old PS2 and PS3 library. The ROG, Odin, Loki seems like a better investment than a PS5 in that sense, because it will pay modern games from steam. Can you "dock" these via hdmi and play with a controller across the room? How easy is it to get into emulation? I haven't done it since the late 2000s, only emulating 32bit on the PC. I don't mind buying games at all, but it would be nice to have the option to run ray traced 60fps Tears of the Kingdom rather than on my Switch.
