Fullmetal Alchemist was a rare gem among popular shonen manga because it was never padded with more chapters for the sake of more chapters, and it wasn't cut short and given a rushed ending, it was the perfect length. And I've been meaning to read 20th Century Boys, I thought Pluto was amazing.

Chilly Jack Gintama is a gem among shōnen, yes its silly at times, but the characters feel real. The heroes have jerk is sides to them and not a single character is perfect. The official translation was really... Forced, imagine Simpsons being dubbed into Japanese and they kinda pretend it taking place in Japan yet at the same time not. Chrono Crusade (not the anime though) and World Embryo are really good too.

Thanks Ariel, I'll look out for it. I like how Miyazaki got so offended when the interviewer in the documentary about Ghibli Studios asked him if he was an 'otaku' when it came to aeroplanes and flight machines. It's the only time I saw him get annoyed or offended during the whole documentary. However, let's get real: watch every single Ghibli film and you'll see the inclusion of a plane or some form of airship/flying machine. Usually of the backyard inventor-engineering genius kind. But yeah, Miyazaki's in mad denial about being a flying machine otaku! ROFL. I wonder if the film he's working on now will have flying machines? ;)

Akatsuki no Yona? It's a deep story about the exiled princess Yona on a journey to find the four dragons so she can help her kingdom and reclaim her throne that was wrongfully taken from her. The things I like most about this story are the characters. So many of them break tropes/stereotypes (esp Zennoh, don't underestimate him, Ch 97). And Kusanagi-sensei is very good at character arcs. Yona is the prime example of this as she goes from being a spoiled princess to a strong leader of a small group dismantling evil organizations like sex trafficers and such. Akatsuki no Yona also has a good plot as Kusanagi is very good at putting hints and little foreshadowing details. Thank you for reading my gushing on this great manga. Hope you have a good night.

If you haven't checked it out yet, Eyeshield 21 is a fun and emotional series! The art is done by Yusuke Murata (one punch man), who is my favorite artist ever. Eyeshield 21 was moderately popular in its heyday but the anime wasn't great and its kinda obscure at this point. ㅠㅅㅠ Its a great sports series tho and easy to get into since it simplifies the rules enough so that even ppl who have never watched an American football game can understand. I will admit that the last arc feels superfluous but its not sluggish or boring. The comedy is pretty funny and it never feels like any of the jokes are duds. Highly recommend it if it slipped your radar! :-)

I’ve spent the past three days binging the manga, and listening to Bob Lennon whenever it applied. The absolute scope and history of each character was incredible. It felt like one person had 20 different effects on another person. The world felt real and I love Friend as an antagonist, and his nature, when revealed makes perfect sense given the context of the story. I love Kenji, Maruo, Otcho, Keroyon, Yoshitune, Konchi, Yukiji, Kanna, Chou, Sadakiyo, Fukubei, Mon-chan, Donkey, the drummer guy, God, Father Nitani and Luciano, even Manjome. I love the fact that the story combines the simpleness of childhood and the complexity of adulthood. Thanks

I'm pretty much a manga rookie, having been slowly gotten into it by my girlfriend over the years, but I can probably throw a couple of recommendations your way. It's probably an obvious call, but since you seem to like psychological thriller-y manga a lot, i'd vouch for Death Note; it's super popular with good reason, it turns out. The characters are all interesting, some of the ways the main protagonist manages to use the Death Note are really ingenious, and his interactions with the other characters can be really funny at times. On the other hand, a manga I would recommend nearly anyone read would be D.Gray-Man. It's just coming off hiatus recently after the mangaka (I think) got sick for a while. It's very action-y, and a lot of the sequences feel very dynamic in how they're drawn. The art is consistently great and the characters all mesh extremely well together with great interactions between them. I will say that some of the panels can get a bit cluttered at times, particularly when things are getting hectic, but nonetheless, I would wholeheartedly recommend it. I shouldn't be writing manga reviews at 2am.

Hey ProZD, seeing as how you like slice of life, I would definitely recommend Joshiraku. It's written by Kōji Kumeta, and illustrated by Yasu. It follows 4 Rakugo comedians and is hilarious. Lots of word play is accompanied by outlandish comedy too. A lot of famous places in Japan are visited and talked about. There's 6 volumes and an anime adaptation *which is very good* A second slice of life recommendation is Nichijou. You've probably heard of it or seen clips from the anime adaptation. Some of my personal favorites: Otoyomegatari: A beautiful story set in 19th century Central Asia. The artwork is beautiful, and the characters all feel very real and organic. It brings the cultures it handles to life, and has taught me more about Central Asia and the Middle East than the American public school system ever did. Even the basic premise--of a 20 year old leaving her nomadic tribe to marry a 12 year old living in a city--is handled very maturely, feeling like an actual historical arranged marriage. Tsuru Tsuru to Zara Zara no Aida: About a guy that lives in a reptile shop, and a girl that loves reptiles. It's an adorable story about a sweet middle-school couple; good art, and really sweet characters. Stand Up!: A very nice manga about a girl conscious of her tall height, and a guy that starts dating her. I've read a few manga about girls being abnormally tall, and I gotta say, this one felt the most natural--unlike other manga or anime where a girl's height defines her personality, the female lead's height just serves as a facet of her character. The main focus is the relationship between the two main characters, and how they draw closer together. It all feels very natural and sweet. Hajimari no Niina: About a girl who dies in high school, and is reincarnated and has the chance to reconnect with elements of her past life. What I really like about it is how it handles her reincarnation--instead of viewing herself as one person who died and has a second shot at life, she views herself as kind of two people, the first being the memories of her old life, and the second being her new life (she often refers to her past life as a different person, even when she still feels connected to her old bonds and emotions). It's a very well thought out concept, and was very emotional to read; I never got around to finishing it, but I really, really want to. A Silent Voice: I always gotta bring this one up. When I watched the movie, it was a straight up spiritual experience; reading the manga was even better. It's about a boy who bullied a deaf girl in elementary school, but later came to regret it as all of his classmates (who had bullied her too) began to shun and bully him in turn. Eventually it gets to the point where he decides to kill himself, but first goes to apologize to the girl for everything he did to her. What follows is a super bitter-sweet story as the two begin to form an unlikely friendship, one which explores themes of bullying, isolation, and friendship. It's a freaking wild ride, and tore into my heartstrings. I wouldn't call this one perfect (there are some problematic characters that never really grow, and some plot points that I wasn't always happy with), but it's my favorite manga I've ever read, and I will always recommend it.

You should make a MAL (My Anime List) account if you don't have one already. Recommend Oyasumi Punpun, very psychological and deals with coming of age. Jojo's bizarre adventure from parts 1 to 8(the latest part which is ongoing), character development, design and abilities are great for the shounen portion (parts 1 to 6), from part 7 onwards it gets extremely philosophical (moreso than what is apparent in the earlier parts).

You should check out Teppu, a women's MMA manga with an unique and amazing female protagonist. Imagine a battle shounen with a mostly female cast, now twist the perspective around so that the story is being told from the antagonist's perspective and make the characters a part of our world. At it's very core, that's one of the defining features of what Teppu is. Sadly it seems the manga didn't end as originally planned by the author, who once had the manga go on a hiatus for 1.5 years due to his poor health. However I think the author managed to pull off a good ending and highly recommend this manga which is my favorite.

Read Chihayafuru if you haven't already, it works really well in manga format, the art is also gorgeous. And I know it's not a Japanese manga, but "Oh! Holy" is a 10/10 webtoon, it's the most hilarious and simultaneously endearing and adorable thing I've ever read. Battle Royale is a classic and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Ao Haru Ride is a typical shoujo manga, but it's much better than the anime. And let's be real, all of us should read more manga lol

If you're looking for something with comedy and action, I highly recommend reading Noragami. It is NOT perfect, but the main character Yato grows to be very interesting as the series progresses. Some of the comedy was so funny that I was laughing out loud while reading it, I find it to be even funnier than the anime. I know you prefer watching anime (and so do I,) so maybe you could watch the 2 seasons and continue with the manga! Are you following the HxH manga? Togashi just went on hiatus again... (cries) Anyways, awesome video! I always look forward to your uploads.

I’d Highly Recommend Vinland Saga, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Berserk, Vagabond, Lone Wolf and Cub, Blade of the Immortal or pretty much anything Osamu Tezuka ever did. My Personal favorite of Tezuka’s is Phoenix but it’s super out of print. But if you can find some Volumes for a reasonable Price, I’d Highly Recommend you get it. Each Volume is it’s own story so you don’t have to start from Volume 1.

I highly suggest you read The Ravages of Time, imagine LotGH in chinese but the strategies are 100x better. It's a bit overwhelming at first due to the weak scanlations and chinese names (unless you are familiar with mandarin and the alike) but just like LotGH, it goes full throttle instantly. I'd say it goes toe to toe with LotGH but it's difficult to say that it's better since im only like 160 chapters in

Tsugumomo is the pinnacle of ecchi shounen harem comedy manga. Upon reading that you'll likely think. "That's the most generic combination of tags you can give a manga!" and you're totally right. But Tsugumomo will exceed your wildest expectation. The author, Yoshikazu Hamada, is such an excellent artist. Gorgeous paneling, spectacular fight artwork, and well drawn naked people with good proportions, a varied body type in cast, and he gives the mc the same level of naked attention he does the females. The series also has some very nice pacing and very, very well written story and characters and even though it is a harem series he doesn't get bogged down in it. Slightly similar but so totally different, Murcielago by Yoshimura Kana is amazing. Seinen, Yuri, Action, Horror, Comedy. The story starts episodic but has started to feel less so and is coming together. The art and characters easily carry this even if you don't like the episodic nature. Kana's art style oozes personality and is just an incredible joy to read. Unfortunately neither are fully available in North America, but are easy enough to find online.

Would recommend Ajin : Demi Human Manga is much better than anime. The manga has a tone shift because it was written by one person and drawn by another, then the writer left and the artist, Gamon Sakurai took over fully and the art and writing for even better.

I fully recommend Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. I watched the anime (parts 1-3) and immediately went to the manga after I finished. The art style evolution is absolutely astonishing, the action is amazing, and the memes are...bizarre! It's been an inspiration for many characters in video games and other animes since the 80's. The part 4 anime is out right now and I think you would love the series as a whole. If you do check it out, don't skip to part 3 like some people say to do!! It's a little boring at first but the rest of the series will make much more sense if you watch/read parts 1 and 2 first! It's great-o daze! ヾ(≧▽≦*)o

When you said her art was already great and got better and better as the story went on, I immediately thought of the Twin Star Exorcists mangaka. =) They screwed up the anime for Twin Star Exorcists, unfortunately. YES GOOD, OPM is one of my favorites and I'm glad you're reading it. If you can get used to the art style, ONE's other work, Mob Psycho 100, is also a really interesting read! What ONE lacks in technical artistic skill (which is... a lot of lacking...) he really makes up for in well-placed paneling and action scenes (I'm always surprised at how dynamic his scribbles actually get). His storytelling is top-notch of course, and Mob Psycho 100 is super hilarious too, and has great drama. The anime is coming out really soon, too, so there's also that! :D

While not as popular as Pluto, Monster or 20th Century Boys, I'm personally very fond of Naoki Urasawa's Happy!. It's about a girl named Miyuki, who works to become a professional tennis player in order to pay off her brother's debt to the Yakuza. Don't be deceived by the title, it's really not that happy of a manga (like all of his works, really). It has a beautiful art style, an engaging story (I personally didn't like the first volume that much, but after the second volume it just keeps getting better and better), and it honestly has some of Urasawa's best characters - which says a lot, considering how good his characters usually are.
