Hi Pye! Great tutorial!! I currently have my longtime workhorse, Canon 5D Mark II with a Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 lens and a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L zoom for portrait/headshots. I’m ready to upgrade. I want a Canon R5 and the lens you reviewed sounds perfect and well worth the investment (and tax write off!😉).

I switched to Canon from Sony specifically for this reason. I still love Sony, but when I go hiking or backpacking now, one lens is all I need and I still feel like I'm shooting with primes.

Hi Pye, would love to know what you think of this lens vis-a-vis the RF 24-70 f2.8 IS. I would have definitely picked the f2 version but for the weight.

I have the same setup and for 6 months of using this R5 and 28-70 all I can say is absolutely incredible combination. The only downside is the weight.

I like this video (as I do all of your videos) but I must admit: this one might not resonate as well as your other ones due to the 'white elephant' in the room- the cost of that gear. I will go out on a limb here and say that the majority of your viewers are guys like me that look for your technical inspiration because we possess a lot older/cheaper gear. To answer your question though: Canon 5D MkIII with either (depending on the goal for the day) a Canon 24-105 or the Canon 70-200 f2.8L. While I have a handful of other lenses, those 2 are by far the most versatile for a day of shooting. Sadly, it is hard to relate to the gear you showed today. Please do not take this entire comment as a negative; it is strictly my viewpoint only. I have (and will continue to do so) always looked forward to your various instructional videos (on FB, Instagram, etc) and that will not change. This video though...made my wallet cry. ;)

This lens may (that is if Sony doesn't respond with one similar) make me switch systems for the third time. I started my journey with Nikon and then dipped my toe in the mirrorless water with Fuji. Built up a whole kit in fuji as I sold off more and more of my Nikon stuff. Then Sony lured me over with the insane AF systems. I love my Sony set up at this time, but when I shoot a wedding I have 2 or 3 camera bodies draped on me because swapping lenses is such a pain and I miss shots. (yeah, I know some people can rely on assistants for this and others claim to be able to swap out super fast). As soon as Canon released this lens I was jealous. Sure, it is really expensive, but I have 3 camera bodies, a 24, a 50, and an 85 on me and I could replace all of this with this set up? Yeah, I want that. I can zoom a lens in a split second as opposed to changing a lens that will take me 20x as long (I am NOT fast at changing lenses). I am holding out for sony to bring something equivalent to market, but if not I would switch systems for this one day.

28-70 f2L has been on backorder from Adorama since February. The lens is unobtainium right now sadly :(

Great set up. I can’t afford that price though. I use the Sony A7iii with the Sony 24/105 f4 for just about all of my photography and the Samyang 85 f1.4 for portraits. I am considering the A7riii for the ability to crop in though. Jim Black👍👍👍

I have rented this lens and loved it! It will be my next large purchase when my budget allows. In a previous video you were using the Samyang 85mm 1.4. There was a mention of “ if you would like to see a video on this lens, mention it in the comments” I would love to see that video.

I definitely hope the other brands go for something like this…speaking to Nikon and Sony here. When Tamron came out with the 50-100mm F/1.8, I was like whaaat 😳😳?! Then I found out it was only for crop sensor bodies, I was disappointed 😔. Canon is doing it right, and I hope that’s the direction the other brands go as well. Thanks Pye 😊👌🏾. That camera is far from mini though 😅 how do you find that lens against the ef 2.8 version? Same zoom. I love my 150mm 1.8 prime 😊 my favourite zoom though, is 24-200mm f4 😊

I use a 24 - 70 2.8 Mark II with a Canon 5D mark II and my photos are lovely.

Pye, use a larger diameter lens like the L series from Panasonic more light ! I also want to buy from a Camera Company that is going to be around ! Canon is challenged !

Come to singapore and you may find that you can't even buy a crappy car with the same amount of money for the r5 and 28-70 f2.

I understand that Canon has always been a producer of some great glass as are others & every now & then they all create a lens that is phenomenal but, are you saying there is that much difference between 2.8 & 2.0? I have never shot or owned a lens with a aperture wider than 2.8. With that said, imagine what camera & lens will be coming out in another 10 years.

I'm with you but for different reasons. I love the 28-70 f2. But I only stop down because of low light when I have to. I kinda think the whole shooting at F2 or F1.2 for Bokeh is overdone. I want some detail in most backgrounds. I don't consider the 45mp a high mp camera now. The new 5s will be though. Cropping in to get a 10mp I do not think is that printable. For Insta it's fine. To print I'd never sell as I think it's a crap print. People will argue that. But a 35mm wet printed looked 100 times better then the 10mp printed. And a high end drum scan of a 35mm film is a lot larger file then 10mp and prints great. But a 45 to 55mp printed does look great but not if cropped to 10mp. So to print, I don't want to crop. For insta. Crop away. We've gotten to the point it seems photographers have forgotten about the quality film provided. And what they're comparing digital prints to just don't hold up against old film prints. If I'm printing, I want a comparable print to what film used to do.

That lens is an impressive technical achievement, no doubt, but it's way too big and heavy, and ludicrously expensive. Not something I would opt for. I honestly don't like high resolution bodies either - the files are enormous and unwieldy.
