This video details all the steps involved in installing my 14’ custom wood-plank ceiling in my DIY van conversion. I did my best to document this beloved project and the enormous amount of time, energy, blood, sweat, and tears spent working alongside my dad to make this project a reality.
I hope you all enjoy!

Aaaamazing job! I’m pretty envious of the relationship you have with your father. I was able find a transit trail a couple weeks ago. I lucked out as the one I ordered wasn’t supposed to be here for many months. I went by the dealership just to look at one..turns out the guy that ordered an ext high roof (much bigger and way more pimped out than the one I ordered) backed out a few minutes prior to my arrival. 5 hrs later I traded in my 2016 transit connect and drove the 23’ trail home! My dad and I were supposed to do some electrical, ceiling/walls. But he left town for the winter without even telling me. Oh well.. I’m used to it at this point. Just another example of how I won’t treat my two boys. You can learn a lot from situations like this. I’m going the route of your father..100%. So when my boys are older and they need my help with a project, I’ll remember this video as you said it was one of if not the best times in your life. 😊

I'm sorry to hear about your dad. Genuinely. But also, don't put too much stock in online perceptions. I promise you this isn't the most complete depiction of my dad and my relationship. Nevertheless, I'm lucky to have him.

You are so fortunate to be able to do that with your dad. I'm converting a transit as well and oh how I wish my dad and brothers lived closer so we could work on stuff together and bond like y'all do. The ceiling looks amazing! You guys are true craftsmen, keep up the great work!👍🏽

Erik! Dude, the time you put into your videos is so appreciated. I'm just starting converting a Ford Transit this year and I've watched a ton of KZfaq videos and even in the process of reading a few books on the topic. By far, your videos have been the most helpful resource I've come across. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

At 28 minutes in, when you can't drill the metal... You may have hit one of the boron steel areas of the transit. Check the ford transit BEMM (body and equipment mounting manual)

I found this fascinating process. I love the comradeship between you and your father. Brought back memories of working on projects with my own father using similar braces to plasterboard a ceiling. A beautiful finished project (the ceiling). Less fiddling with fitting that I would have thought.
@ErikJohnson2020

Thank you Judy! The first few boards took the longest to get the fit right, but once they were installed, everything else fell into place rather easily. The biggest trick was simply trying not to ruin what we had already installed. 😅

Beautiful ceiling! Perhaps more weight than ideal up high but beautiful. I used 1/4 “ T&G with 1/2” strapping. Did it with no help and one “pushy pole” . To mitigate that transit curve I lowered/added 1/2 inch of strapping to the cross beam just before the curve. This little bit of a lower starting point for that curve was the difference in multiple tongue breaks in trying to make that curve.

Nice looking ceiling... I did something similar. If you ever do it again, it's much easier to remove the blob, run the boards all the way to the front. Then cut the top of blob down to fit over the boards. 😉

Hi Erik, I watched this amazing work again and have a question about the LED strips, what did you use and how did you installed it, looks like it's inside the dark accent strips.
@ErikJohnson2020
@ErikJohnson2020 Жыл бұрын
Thanks Effie! 🥰 I used these LED lights: amzn.to/3D76RjX though I'm not sure that I would use them again. They have a unique "sideways" profile vs a flat LED strip, so it made recessing them inside the walnut accent strips a lot easier. However, they have been absolutely miserable to custom solder to connect them to power. Maybe I just suck at soldering, but they do not like any kind of movement after soldering, and I've had to replace nearly every section of light at least once (thanks to my repeatedly taking the ceiling fan covers in and out, which disrupts the wiring, and is the main cause of fatigue on those soldering joints, but regardless, has been an absolute headache.) You can see how I installed them, and measured and cut the groove for the LED lights at about 13:50 timestamp on the "How I Made a CUSTOM Tongue & Groove YACHT Ceiling | DIY Transit Van Conversion | Ep. 19" video.

Looks fantastic, but why did you not put any lighting into the ceiling? also.. how much weight is added and do you notice the added weight up high when driving?
@ErikJohnson2020
@ErikJohnson2020 Жыл бұрын
There is lighting - two LED strips run the entire length of the ceiling. As for weight, I'm not sure what it all came out to, but I can't tell any difference when driving. Honestly the van itself is thousands of lbs and the ceiling is probably less than 200lbs

Hey just found your channel and this looks awesome man. Can I ask why you were pulsing the screws as opposed to driving them straight in? Thanks!
@ErikJohnson2020
@ErikJohnson2020 Жыл бұрын
Thanks!! So the finishing screws we used have super small heads which makes their visual impact rather minimal, but also makes it extremely easy to drive them too far into the wood, so short bursts makes controlling the depth you drive the screw a lot easier (for me) to control. Hope that helps!

What are the things for that hang between the boards every 2 feet or so?
@ErikJohnson2020
@ErikJohnson2020 Жыл бұрын
Plastic (Delrin) washers! They did a great job protecting the wood, giving an expansion gap between boards, and worked great as a fit indicator so we knew when we had the boards correctly lined up.

Just curious why did you not use plastic moisture barier over the insulation?
@ErikJohnson2020
@ErikJohnson2020 Жыл бұрын
So moisture barriers are probably the single most debated topic in van builds. Hypothetically they should provide an impermeable barrier to prevent moisture from collecting on your metal van wall, however that also assumes you van is built air tight, which likely isn't the case, and if any air transfer takes place the vapor barrier might in fact trap water and moisture in your van wall cavities, creating rust over time. There isn't any definitive answer on the effectiveness of vapor barriers in van insulation, but given the possible risk over time, I opted for active moisture management instead.

It's nice that you edited out the times you wanted to eat each others faces. Inevitable in tight spots no matter how much you love one another. It is a great looking ceiling. So glad you didn't have the "hey dad was this wire supposed to be inside?" at the end.
