I've found that if you draw, and you want to paint with detail, then a stiffer brush is better. I'm going to try the Goldenedge brushes. Thank you for sharing.

I say a thank you every time I haul out my Grumbacher Goldenedge brushes. You put me on to them last year when I wanted stiffer brushes. They are my favorite brushes but not to everyone's taste I know. Thanks again Steve. My Princeton Neptune brushes have developed a tiny curl at the tip which I do not like. I had only used a few times. I was not impressed. I am glad they are not too costly.

I love your brush videos. I'm your former Hollywood makeup artist (commented many times on your great channel). Anyway, you mentioned the Simple Simmons brush. Robert Simmons actually hosted great brush classes for us professional makeup artists when his wife had her fine purple handle makeup brush line. Fabulous brush company!

Nice comparison and review. I've heard the story that riggers were originally designed for painting sailing ship rigging. In the nautical paintings that I've seen, I cannot imagine how the artists had so much control to paint the graceful and precise curved lines. Must be they never drank as much coffee as me or used a method (or trick)?

Every brush has a maximum size stroke that it can produce. Use the brush who's maximum size is exactly the size you need and its very easy to produce perfect lines every time.

Thanks for steering me to Grumbacher. I have some sable/synthetic riggers that cost me a whole lot more but are just too wet-noodley for my liking.

I love LOVE LOOOVE my #2 long handle Rosemary & Co. synthetic rigger. It’s nice and sharp, I have the versatility with the longer handle, depending on how precise I need to be, or how much “bounce” I want, or what angle I use the brush (painting on side of brush).

I just got my master touch long rigger and short fat handle and i love it. I make the best long grasses with it. Better yet was the Modeena by Royal & Langnickel. 3/4" makes beautiful grases with the brush cut out in about 6 places in the end. Thanks for taking the time to do a great video on the holiday.

I have one rigger brush.It's a Winsor & Newton Sceptre Gold II size 1. I love this brush. I would love to have a stiffer rigger as well. Have the Grumbacher Goldenedge Round in even sizes from 0-12. I LOVE these brushes. Bought them on your recommendation for synthetic affordable brushes. I will be buying that Rigger. Thanks for all you do one your channel. You have help me become a better painter. You have made me into a "100%cotton paper snob" also!😉👩‍🎨

I find it fascinating that even though Canada and the US are pretty close, I've never seen any of these in my local store XD They all look pretty great, except for the very limp Silver Black Velvet brushes. I got my first normal-sized Black Velvets and I thought of you, I hope I'll enjoy using them!

Thank you very much for demonstrating the different brushes. I'm just learning how to paint, and I was looking for a fine brush to draw whiskers/fur on animals, and you have helped me make a decision. I like all your brushes except the very limp, and I've nailed it down to the number 2 Grumbacher and the Royal and Lannickle 10/0. I like the spring on those brushes and the fine line they produce. I've subscribed to your channel hoping I'll continue to learn new things. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

Thanks so much for the much needed information. I too have the Princeton Neptune rigger, a #2, and found it to be a bit limpy. You provided a good selection to choose from. I am thinking of picking up either the Simply Simmons (I have a large flat by them) or the Princeton Summit. Happy Thanksgiving.

Love these videos! I am going to try to buy some "nail art" brushes to see what they can do- I need something for fine detail, even finer than any brushes you showed here. I will mention in comments of a future video of yours if I am successful with any of them... thanks again, even your "smaller" videos are worth my time!

I’m late watching this video but I do love my rigger brushes. I have a favorite. It’s a very fine sable brush maybe a half of an inch of or less of hair. I can’t remember the brand but it’s definitely my go to for branches and grasses. Absolutely love the brush! Hope you had a great Thanksgiving with your family Steve. Can’t believe advent is here and Christmas is around the corner. Time flies...

Just an FYI. I put a Grumbacher Golden Edge #2 in my Amazon shopping list It was $8 and they has 6 left. Unfortunately for me I didn't order right then and now they are gone and the new price is$20! I think Amazon got a whole lot of orders for your recommended brush and decided to make a profit!! So instead, I ordered the #4 for $8! Thought you'd like to know that not only are your videos excellent, you are helping Amazon too!! Thanks for the great video that finally made sense to me as to what a rigger/liner brush is.

Yeah that seems to be an issue from time to time with selling them out. What happens sometimes is the preferred supplier that Amazon features changes as they sell out. And some suppliers will even build a shipping price into the cost then tell you its free shipping.

I very much appreciate this video. If I am understanding correctly, it seems riggers/scripts/liners are generally the same except that scripts/liners are longer. I'd love a bit more clarification on that; for example, is a script the same as a liner? It seems different manufacturers use the terms loosely. I love your teaching style - really fantastic. I've watched many of your videos - thanks so much.
@mindofwatercolor
@mindofwatercolor 5 жыл бұрын
Length really doesn't matter to the type. There are all sorts of lengths made. If anything a script/liner brush can get much thicker. Riggers are usually the really thin ones. But the terms are used loosely, you're correct there.

Great video Steve. I also prefer a brush with more spring. When I started painting I bought some Royal Langnickel brushes which I hardly ever use because they are so limp. I don't know if you know this but the Simply Simmons brush that you showed is known as a Daler Rowney Graduate brush over here in the UK. I have the same size 2 Rigger but the part code is 212130002.

I use this on the left, it’s a full body brush with a liner end and it is synthetic. goo.gl/3oRvXn If you twist it whilst using it, it puts in organic little side branch marks, check out SAA video on Matthew Palmer detail brush with Anita Pounder. An animal hair version is made by Da Vinci, their Series 5519 Liner - the 05 is a very fine point with a full body, not sure how springy that one is though.
