This video talks about the bottom drain that I have in almost all my ponds and some of its advantages and disadvantages and also some recommendations on installing it that might make your life a little easier.

Proper video Adam. This is just the kind of info that new pond builders/keepers need to watch. You know your subject more than any other on youtube. A video on pipework, valves and return flow would be great sir. Congrats on over 20k also

Adam, I have a 17,500L Koi pond running on a drum and moving K1. I got one of the new Superfish RC 15000L pumps. This pump has a speed control. I run the pump on 8,000L/hr and this only costs 23W of energy. For purging the pipe/drain I can run the pump at 15,000L and then switch it back again. Works brilliantly!

Hi Adam. A very interesting and informative video on Bottom Drains. I noticed that the bottom drain you had connected the air line by fitting a hose between the input and centre column within the bottom drain itself. Is that not a bit of a weak point as hoses tend to wear, go hard , loosen and come off. The bottom drain I used had grey pressure pipe going from the pressure pipe inlet to the centre column of the bottom drain. The centre column was fixed and the top screwed on to it. Using pressure pipe all the way to the centre column is surely safer. Looking forward to next weeks video.

I've got a pond without a bottom drain, concrete base. Thinking of cutting out a section of concrete, undermining the walls and fitting a drain and then concreting in to original level, insulating and fibreglassing. It's part of an extension turning my 3 ft deep pump fed pond and making it nearly 6ft gravity.... Will be around 2500 gallons. Do you see any problem In doing the drain in this way?
@martingage53233 жыл бұрын
Hi Adam, I’ve had a pond built and a 4 inch air bottom drain from JBR plastics. This came with air dome, a grey collar between this and the main drain. The fitter has fitted it without the grey plate in between. He said it does not need it, my question is does it and what difference does it make in your opinion. Many thanks
@aidandalton74043 жыл бұрын
Hi Adam, great video. What's your opinion on retro fit bottom drains? Are they good at keeping the pond clean,are they better than a solids handling pump and filter set up? Thanks, I'm thinking of investing in one. Pond is already fibreglass so it would have to be retro fit one.

Hi would you say its worth spending £160 on a spindrifter aerated BD against buying a basic bottom drain and attaching a separate air source to it ? . Pond build about to start, 3x3x1.5 Mtr block built but on a very tight budget . Your insight greatly appreciated.

Hello sir, 4 inche bottom drain without air line how much? Thanks
@aaron6592 жыл бұрын
Hi Adam Enjoy ur vids esp purging a system! Doing the ground works to install my spindrifter nearly sorted. 2 Q,s do i place the db directly onto the ground thick clay or do i place it on a paving slab or a concrete base before i cement the pipework to get ready for concrete pond base fill? And what fall in the concrete floor to the bd do u recomnend? Max distance from pond wall to bd would be 6/7 foot. Appreciate any thoughts cheers
@AdamJulyan2 жыл бұрын
I usually put a bit of concrete under the drain its easier to get it level and stops it sliding about once you've done that put some around the pipe as well to support it so the concrete from mixer can't bend it. Make sure you put quite a bit of weight on the drain when concrete goes on or it will float away. It wants to be central with a good slope into the drain so everything naturally falls to the drain.

adam first off thanks i learnt a lot of important stuff from this vid that i never new but whats you thought on gravity fed filters i dont like the thought of it i think i would prefer coming off the external pump but see a vid of someone saying if you have a 4inch bottom drain it would be better to have it gravity fed what do u think. btw your koi at the end of the vid looked beautiful what a nice selection of koi
@AdamJulyan3 жыл бұрын
Thanks 🙂. A gravity fed filter is the best way to go it keeps the pump away from the dirt so the pump doesn't have to handle solids which it would have to grind up into small pieces so your pump will live a lot longer with a filter before it. Because the pump isn't grinding the dirt into small pieces it make the filters job a lot easier. There are so many more advantages to gravity fed filters but I don't want to write a book in the comments 🙂 There are also so advantages to pump fed its easier and generally cheaper and if you don't have an above ground pond it means you don't have to bury your filter.

Very informative adam mate 👍 I too didn't add a purge valve on my pond but i purge to the drum and rarely get anything come through, but i am running two pumps flat out so I'm guessing there isn't much chance foe anything settling.
@AdamJulyan3 жыл бұрын
It's not too bad with a drum filter as they usually have high flow rates but one of the things you can do occasionally which is what i do to purge my skimmer is close the drain valve let the pumps suck most of the water out of the drum and then open the valve so the water rushes through the system. Thanks for the comment 🙂

Hi Adam just a quick question at the 22 minutes point when you talk about fitting the liner flange do you recommend putting a bead of sealant between the underside of the liner and the bottom drain rim before screwing the flange down ?
@AdamJulyan3 жыл бұрын
Yes absolutely it wants a thin coat all around the rim to make sure it sticks really nice but not too much that it causes flange to sit unevenly I should have mentioned that thanks for pointing it out 🙂

Hi Adam, firstly great video and great pond you have there. I'll be fitting one of these in the next couple of days, never thought of a boot before, sounds like a good idea, what do you use to cover the jubilee clips. Oh and must be tight getting a screw driver in there. Hope you reply and stay safe.
@AdamJulyan3 жыл бұрын
It's a good idea to use a rubber boot to hold the drain lid in place it makes it a little easier if maintenance is required in the future. You don't need to cover the clips they will be fine although its best to tighten all rubber boots with and 8mm socket and wrench as a spanner will never get them tight enough and risk them coming off under pressure or time.
@troops19803 жыл бұрын
@@AdamJulyan Hi Adam, thanks that's great, just thought weed and leaves might get stuck easier on the clips if not covered. Anyway thanks for getting back and have a great summer.

Great video - what is the solution to stop the dome from unwinding and coming off. Thanks
@AdamJulyan2 жыл бұрын
Make sure your fish don't have a parasite and give it a little nip tighten remember it's plastic but it should tighten enough so its pretty well on there.

Had they placed a plastic 'hook' on the other side of the drain, one could bend rebar and pin it down to the bottom of the drain. And do pre-concrete mix to just affix it for the real pour.
@AdamJulyan3 жыл бұрын
Yeah some way to actually anchor the drain its self down would be brilliant addition rather than relying on the pipework to hold it in place.
