Hitch hit the nail on the head with this one, I share his sentiments exactly. I think the biggest reason religion has been so popular is because people just can't accept that ultimately, their lives have no purpose and that they will cease to exist. This frightens them so much they've conjured up an imaginary place in the sky for them to go after death
@kostasz7z
@kostasz7z 5 жыл бұрын
Well im pretty sure that people are more frightened by the fact that a SUPER IMPARTIAL know-it-all judge would judge them after death according to the 10 Commandments. That would make people want to make up some bullshit story about everything coming out of nothing in order to sleep better at night and think death will redeem them.

@@kostasz7z More than 89% americans say they will go to heaven, people personally like the idea of 2 eternal theme parks because they mostly belive they are going to the nice one all those they hate are going to the nasty one. That is why it is consoling. As for something out of nothing, first of all that is a strawman, most physicists say the universe is eternal with the current evidence. And secondly, something comes out of nothing everyday, everywhere, all the time, they are called quantum fluctuations, matter and energy do pop into existence and can be seen measured and observed. @davewalt1781 3 жыл бұрын
@Rritobak Dutta I'm going to give you some evidences for God and the Bible. God created the universe and is all powerful, all knowing, God is righteous and perfect and doesn't lie. God says there will be a Judgment Day and there is a heaven and hell. God is giving us every chance to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. My belief system is based on the Bible. Thousands of Old Testament prophesies, many hundreds, some thousands of years in the future, completely fulfilled as predicted, 25,000 Biblical archaeology finds that totally agree with the Bible, not one disproves the Bible, 11 of the Apostles who were with Jesus saw Him crucified on the cross, died and buried and rose again on the 3rd day, were willing to give their lives for the Gospel and the truth. They would not have died for a lie. There are thousands of Bible manuscripts, that all agree with each other. The chance for the big bang theory and evolution is absolutely zero chance. You look at the entire universe, the human body, all the different plants, animals, fish, birds, insects, etc. cannot all be an accident or evolved. You look at the protein molecule and DNA, they are both so complicated, they cannot be an accident. Millions of pieces of information in the exact order to survive. The earth is spinning at 1000 miles per hr., traveling at 22,000 mph around the sun in a perfect orbit. The earth is tilted at just the right angle so that we can exist. The sun and moon are at the exact distances so the earth can exist. There has to be a Designer and Creator and that’s the one true God in heaven. The God of the Bible, who created all things. This is just a few evidences.

When one invokes God is the exact moment their minds are no longer capable of understanding a topic aka when they reach their intellectual limit. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence and invoking the existence of god is an extraordinary claim for which no one has ever been able to provide evidence for. At least science attempts to move our understanding forward, where as religion claims certainty and certainty is the enemy of growth. Certainty means we stop questioning, and thus we never move closer to discovering the truth.
@Kevin.berger
@Kevin.berger 4 жыл бұрын
"Certainty means we stop questioning, and thus we never move closer to discovering the truth." I agree. So, why, then, embrace the feigned certainty that there is no god at all? Theism posits a *singular* propositon--that being the existence of a deity. Each and every time a skeptic refers to the deity of the Abrahamic faiths, to Adonai, Jehova, or Yahweh; every time one mentions Allah--which, incidentally, is not the Islamic name of a deity, but the Aramaic *word* for god--every reference to Buddha, Shiva, or another named deity or pantheon of deities; every time a skeptic refers to the Bible--whether it be the New or the Old Testament--to the Bhagavad Gita, the Qur'an, the Sutras, or any other belief system's sacred texts; any time a skeptic speaks of Adam and Eve, the devil, Jesus, Mary, Moses, Paul, or any other person identified in sacred text; any time a skeptic mentions Buddha, Mother Teresa, Muhammad, any pope, televangelist or other figures associated with any given faith; any time a skeptic refers to the afterlife, anthropomorphism, Creationism, the Gospels, Heaven or Hell, a Holy war, in the name *of* or in opposition *to* a deity--whether it be the Crusades, the Holocaust, or Jihad--every mention of an Inquisition, omnipotence, omnipresence, omniscience, Original Sin, penance, prayer, proselytization, sacrifices, a soul, a spirit, theocracy, "thought crime," tithing, witch hunts, or worship; every time a skeptic makes references to Jain Law, Mosaic Law, Sharia Law, the Wiccan Rede, or any other spiritual law; every time a skeptic makes reference to any activity, concept, doctrine, dogma, ideology, institution, or tenet belonging to any belief system...the skeptic is engaging in a discussion of *religion* rather than theism and is committing a false equivalency fallacy. I would be most interested in an argument against the existence of a deity that was not actually an argument against religion for three reasons: 1) poking holes in religion isn't especially creative, difficult, or new; 2) on many of those points, I don't disagree; and 3) while as many have pointed out, not every religion can be right, but they can all be wrong, even if they are all wrong, it would have no bearing on the existence of a deity; and that is the *only* issue with which *theism* is concerned.
@wonkothesane8691
@wonkothesane8691 4 жыл бұрын
An interesting argument, except for the claims made by Dawkins, Hitchens and others, that God doesn't exist, and there is no such thing as the supernatural. This presents an argument based on certainty. I would also like to point out a lot of arguments in various subjects are based on ''scientific certainty''. I find Mr. Hitchens to be a highly moral man, even though, as a Catholic, I can't really agree with everything he says. Nice argument, though.
@golangismyjam
@golangismyjam 3 жыл бұрын
@@wonkothesane8691 you are Catholic therefore you know that there is 0 evidence for what you believe yet you believe it anyway, because likely that is what you were indoctrinated to believe from birth. You sound like a smart guy so I don't understand how you disbelieve the theory with mountains of evidence and believe the theory with none, that makes fantastical claims. It's bizarre.
@wonkothesane8691
@wonkothesane8691 3 жыл бұрын
@@golangismyjam: If that were true, however, there are a number of former atheists who have come to faith, having been raised as atheists. William Murray, son of Madelaine Murray O'hare, is a prime example. The converse is also true, a number of atheists have been raised in a Christian environment. Also I wasn't raised in a Catholic home, my conversion to Catholicism is the result of a number of influences, my own upbringing is a rather loose set of beliefs. I was raised in a home where freedom of choice, in religion especially, was stressed. I have a question though, do you feel I'm trying to press you into becoming a Christian, against your own will, or better judgement? Because it isn't my intent; I will share my faith, my reason for it, and I will defend the Christian faith, and the Catholic church, but I don't believe in conversion at the point of a sword, even a rhetorical sword. So do I sound, or rather, read as one would force you to convert, so to speak?
@golangismyjam
@golangismyjam 3 жыл бұрын
@@wonkothesane8691 no you do not appear to be attempting to convert. You personally may not have been raised in a religious household and therefore follow the same religion blindly but the vast majority do. You don't think it's a little sketchy that they aim to convert children with no ability to question? Not to mention all the competing religions that contradict each other and that we have disproved a whole lot of nonsense in these books and proved literally none of it. It staggers me how anyone with a sane mind could accept this without question. If I may speak for atheists in general it seems very clear to us that the intelligent religious are con men and the flock just don't know any better. They are brought up this way usually and taught not to question anything even the most ridiculous of stories. Of course there are always exceptions to the rule

@E101ification 9 жыл бұрын
Nathan MacGregor No, not really. 'Masochism' is grossly misrepresented by Hollywood and mainstream media. Very, very very few 'masochists' actually enjoy the physical sensation of pain - I am one, and I have never met one 'masochist' who actually enjoys getting their fingers trapped in a door. The 'enjoyment' comes from the fact that it's being inflicted by another person, and usually it relies on that other person's (the sadist's) enjoyment of inflicting the pain. It's not as simple as 'masochists like pain' - it's more the dynamic between them and the person inflicting the pain on them. You can't just punch yourself in the teeth and get off on it.

E101ification I don't think my post was specific enough to warrant such an in-depth reply. Two points I'd like to make... First off, I never made any claims about what masochism was actually like, so you refuted a point I didn't make. And what if I'm a masochist? You never know who you're talking to on the internet. Second, if we assume that Hell exists and that the devil enjoys torturing people, then that meets your criteria, so, once again, you wasted your time.

Time for someone to look up the definition of 'BRUTAL'. I don't think it means what you think it does. Hitchens was not 'BRUTAL' in this video segment, he was succinct. If you think being succinct is the same as being brutal, you're mistaken.

That's "should've" as a lazy abbreviation of "should have", like "I've done it" for "I have done it". Not "should of", which is nonsense. Re "a IQ test", how about "an IQ test"? I guess that "an" immediately before a word starting with a vowel was originally also a lazy speech option, but it works. Writing comments is like an IQ test, because you, your intellect and your opinions will be judged on how you present in writing. If your writing is rubbish then people will fairly regard your mind and opinions as rubbish too.

I'll go one better, and clam atheism *is* morally superior, even if it leads to the exact same behavior, because then, and *only* then, the moral behavior will be based on pure awareness, the one way to true goodness. If you're only doing what is right, or refraining from doing what is wrong, because you sincerely believe there's someone standing over you with folded arms (be it a parent, boss, cop, landlord, teacher, judge, *or* a deity), then your moral status is at best unverifiable, and possibly quite tainted. That means, then, that *only* the atheist can lay claim to true and *verifiable* morality. Genuine goodness can *only* exist (or at least, *only* be verified) in the *absence* of coercion.

But all of your friends who don't give themselves to Jesus and your God, including the guy who puts gas in your car, the teller at the supermarket, the postman and the list goes on. All of these people are going to hell fi they don't love and follow Jesus. That's what the bible says. that's why christianity is a horrible religion, in my opinion. In fact, billions of people will be burning forever in hell. What kind of sick minded god would condemn that many people to such a ghastly existence . . and it's forever!!!!! Think about it. That's the reality of what the bible preaches. That said, I don't believe there is such a god that exists.

Robert DiPaula Hi Robert, I'm afraid I'm never going to be a believer. I'm an atheist. I have no shame about my not believing in god. In fact, I am totally happy about it and in no way ever want religion to be a part of my life. There's simply nothing in religion that I want or need. I find it an obstacle to clear critical thinking and honest reasoning. The universe is amazing as it is. It needs no religion. That's something to admire.
@robertdipaula1623
@robertdipaula1623 8 жыл бұрын
+Tim King I completely respect that brother.. I understand everybody has their reasoning and their own mind. but just to make it clear I don't stress the religion part as much as just a personal relationship with God who with convincing evidence to me ,sent Jesus to this world to teach us how to live. the man definitely lived on this Earth and no doubt ,to me anyway that is ,died on a cross when he didn't have to. and his life was convincing enough for people that witnessed him, to die for him as well.. from all that I gather personally there would never have been Christianity if something astounding didn't happen in that time, like the resurrection. I am honestly concerned for people that don't take seriously the only person that claims he can save us from our own wretchedness and promised life after death as opposed to a Lake of Fire that is, which is what is burning under the Earth, that is described perfectly in the Bible ,even though there was no knowledge of the characteristics under the Earth at that time.... God in the Old Testament even goes as far as describing the Earth as a floating Earth without any knowledge of the Earth being anything but flat and grounded.... which is how they thought of the earth back in those times... I truly wish you peace in your life no matter what route you take.. I just hope that you've given it as much so as I have considering it would be a horrible thing to open our eyes after we die, (as hard as it is to rationalize that)....and be in a never-ending ,unimaginable nightmare..... I hope the choices you make are properly investingated,unbiased,and weighed out....I personally, spent much time looking for truth after a good run of things in my adolescent and young adulthood...despite my catholic upbringing,and I can rest assure there is all the confidence I need in Jesus. I apologize if I came off arrogant in my earlier replies,i still get excited discussing these topics....hope this was a usefull discussion.I appreciate your bluntness... Respectfully....Bob ✌🌞🇺🇸

I didn't actually consider myself an atheist until this year. After discovering the existence of the Laniakea Supercluster and the Great Wall. That was it. If you know anything about sinking PLCs, you know that to control a potentiometer, it sinks the voltage to ground, so it can control it with a power supply. If our supercluster is potentially just a control module of a PLC of unfathomable size, then whatever this is... Is more of a computer than anything. Knowing that, I don't know how I could even consider the possibility of a god. Thus, at 38 I transitioned from agnosticism to atheism... And my life changed in absolutely no way because of it.

I do know about Greek mythology, having studied it for a year. And by all means, they are very powerful humans. And saying they work in 'harmony' is a far cry from the truth. They have mini temper tantrums when they don't get there way. And, what I was saying, is there can be only 1 everlasting, eternal being. When you have more than one, they either have to be reduced in power, or they cancel each other out. They are not gods because they aren't all-powerful. They have an end, they had a start

I think of death like this... assuming there is no afterlife, you cannot experience death, just as you could not experience your time before birth. Since we can only experience being conscious, then for all intents and purposes, we are immortal. We can only ever experience being alive. That is all we will ever know. To me, that is somewhat comforting. And if there is a Heaven, then that's just icing on the cake.
