Each year I make a visit to Richmond Park to run workshops for the red deer rut. This year I decided to go a day early and have a day of photography for myself. It ended up being one of my favourite trips of the year.

It is really easy to become disenchanted and disheartened with nature photography, especially during a long spell when nothing seems to be going right. But then.... all it takes is a special encounter and your spirits lift; the pain and disappointment of previous failure simply vanishes and once again all is right in the world. I find that only nature gives you that. A beautiful set of images and a lovely thoughtful video. Best wishes.

Happy to see you're feeling better. Inspiration and motivation is something that just comes when wildlife and conditions are perfect - but the "first mile" is the hardest! :) I'm headed there this weekend!

A really lovely vlog. I spent a couple of days there a few weeks ago and was blown away by the beauty and wildlife within the park. Unfortunately I didn't see any Little Owls though. Are they found all over? Thank you for sharing your experience Richard.

Thank you Barry. It’s an incredible place isn’t it. Regarding the little owls, basically yes, you’ll find them all over. I just check in all the woodlands and occasionally get lucky ☺️

Everything about this video was so beautiful Richard and those deer images were stunning. I often go to Richmond Park and have yet to see one Little Owl, lucky you.

Great vid Richard. I live a few miles from the park, and I’m often in there, more so this time of the year. It’s epic. I concur that the feeling of excitement whilst getting shots, and the eye popping vistas, with the deer entering your chosen scene, and hooting, -it doesn’t get much better than this! If I’m off work, and the weather is favourable, I love to get out with the camera… you might want to get some better boots, and waterproof trousers, as you often need to wade through the bracken, and you get soaked in seconds with the dew. I also keep a rolled up sheet in my coat in case I need to lay prone to get the sun lower at sunrise. Keep them coming Richard!

Always love your work Richard. I’m lucky enough to have both Bushy and Richmond Park on my doorstep, Bushy Park being closer to me and my favourite (I visit most days). Unfortunately, at this time of year not all photographers are as respectful as you in their quest to get that perfect bellowing stag. I’m so glad you had a great day and got some fantastic shots 😊
