“Just like you taught me” is so respectful. They didn’t just seat her at the table she is their honored guest, their benefactor and teacher. I know it’s just a movie, but I feel like most movies resemble real people. Those people were raised right, their honor, their kindness and their humble gratitude is a deeply moving example of real gentility.

You have to understand that Celia and Minnie were outcasts. Minnie poured hope into a woman that has lost four babies, nonetheless she was still the maid. I wonder if Minnie was allowed to live on the property or in her old home. I would love to read the book to see if it mentions it.

Seeing the friendship between Celia and Minnie blossom, and then finding out Johnny is as good as Celia is what makes this movie so memorable for me. Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain kill it. Their acting is superb. Moreover, the two are in real life very good friends. In fact, Octavia has said publicly that Jessica embodies the spirit of Celia because when she found out how much Octavia was earning per movie because black actresses just don't get paid the same, Jessica helped Octavia negotiate her salary by attaching her own salary to Octavia. These two are the best of Hollywood.

To me the biggest show of how different these two are from the others and that they are just genuinely *good* people is Celia's shock and surprise that Minnie thinks she'll get fired just because Johnny found out she was working there and when Johnny told Minnie she had a job there for the rest of her life 'if you want it'. Others will fire their staff over nothing and feel justified because their staff was 'lucky' they were hired and they were seen as property that could be left to others in a will or swapped with someone else's when needed. From the very beginning Minnie was more a friend, mentor and a sense of comfort for Celia and *she knows it* and even Johnny knows Minnie saved Celia and is the reason she's doing a lot better mentally than when she was in the large house all alone and he is grateful and appreciates Minnie for that alone...and not having to eat corn pone anymore. Minnie helps Celia remember her strength and was a shoulder when she couldn't be strong and I truly love their friendship.

Minnie & Celia are both such a good & pure people through & through. Minnie didn’t just cook for Celia & Celia didn’t just expect Minnie to do it. Minnie TAUGHT Celia & Celia LEARNED from her. Celia respected Minnie as a person & recognized & respected Minnie’s expertise & knowledge & deferred to it - learning all she could from Minnie. And Minnie responded to that genuine respect as a person by respecting Celia back & teaching her the way she would her own child or someone she loved. Because that’s obviously what cooking was to Minnie - love. These women had both been shit on by life more than once - but they found kindred souls in each other & both became better for it.

The reveal of Johnny’s real nature in comparison to Stuart or Hilly’s husband was actually really well done. With how much Celia wants to hide everything away from him, you would think he’s just like the other guys in town that really don’t have much compassion or kindness in their hearts for anything, not even their wives or girlfriends. But not only has Johnny known Minny had been there the whole time, he was not morally opposed to it. And in addition to that, he loves his wife so much, isn’t angry at her for the miscarriages and sees the positive influence Minny has had on her and her getting better and him being eternally grateful for the impact she’s had on her. You begin to see why Johnny left Hilly to begin with.
