Why do people look at dick pics on their phone?! Anyway, more impressions of America and some amazing Monterey Aquarium shots ;)
Also, I think this is one of the very few times I've uploaded a fully uncut video of myself talking (this is quite rare). Maybe this means I am finally more comfortable blabbering in front of a camera.

I'm so glad you had a good time in the US, especially since you were in Portland Or, where I live.

I'm glad you enjoyed your trip here. You covered quite a lot of ground in what I think you said was 1 week. You chose really good places to tour. I've done all but Powell's Bookstore. My son lives in Eugene, OR (only about 150Km south of Portland. I will definitely go there on one of my visits to see him & his family. Maybe you had a chance to go walking in one of the lovely Universities like UC Berkeley, Stanford, or Cal Poly in San Louis Obispo. They are really lovely & filled with marvelously educated & enthusiastic students. MB Aquarium is a terrific place to visit & it changes all the time. Not the big tanks, of course, but the little hands on experiences. Pier 39 in San Francisco is so surprisingly serene for being in a big city. Best wishes.

I miss Portland and Powell"s sooo much! I could spend entire Saturdays there!I hope my odd and friendly fellow Portlanders were good hosts. It sounds like your hotel was in the Lloyd district near the convention center, if you ended up at Denny's. I'm sorry that you ended up at any Denny's, but I am particularly sorry it was that Denny's lol.

I lived in both Portland and Monterey (actually Ft. Ord). As a graduate of Portland State with a degree in history, I spent a lot of time in Powell's city of books. In Monterey, since active duty military got free admission into the aquarium, I was a regular visitor there and around Cannery Row.

To the guy in the elevator you should have said, "Well, you won't have to worry about the file size being too big on those." :)

If you ever get the chance to go out by Cincinnati, OH, you should pay a visit to the Newport Aquarium across the river in Newport, KY.

You're really looking energized and quite relaxed at the same time. Very amusing (except for the elevator guy. Maybe he wanted to see people's reaction? Stupid. :/) P.S.: according to the bill board Ursula K. Le Guin had a reading at this book store? I didn't know she was still alive...

+monstermirror Cool! Probably not the day we were there, but we did meet Arnold Drake, who is a man who makes lots of nice paper sculptures in the coffee area of Powell's (we also met Adam Hurst, a celloist, at the airport - clearly I've left a lot out of the video...) :) it was a fantastic bookstore, I hope to go back one day :) As for the guy, I do truly think he was unaware people could see it, but it still makes me wonder why people do it in the first place xD.

I was amazed that the zoo was open during the winter (it would seem detrimental to the animals' health). However, the giant second-hand bookstore was incredible in a good way. I can't get anything quite like that where I live.
@RhymesWithFace
@RhymesWithFace 8 жыл бұрын
+Tim Despain Quite a few of the animals were off exhibit and in indoors warmer locations (and all of them had the chance to move into shelter even in their outdoor locations) - but I do agree that although zoos do have great aspects, they aren't the best option for all of the animals they host.

Did you get to visit Michael Dickenson's lab in Cali? He is a good guy to talk to and has a great sense of humour. I hope you get a chance to come back. We enjoy cheerful visitors such as yourself. We also do a little biological research now and then.
@RhymesWithFace
@RhymesWithFace 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! :D Hopefully I'll get to visit again next year - I loved California and its people! I'm so excited to see someone talking about Dickinson, and funny you should mention him - because I actually study insect flight and I was on the verge of going down to L.A. to visit his lab! I wasn't able to in the end (not enough time), but I did visit Robert Dudley in Berkeley, and also spoke to Stacey Combes who recently moved to UCDavis - so I did do some networking with flight scientists. :) If per chance you are interested in science content, I have a science channel at kzfaq.info which I think is a bit more interesting than this 'second channel' :p (this is a shameless plug)

It wasn't coincidence. I read the card in the video and assumed you would know him. I used to work at the USAF Research Lab. A friend of mine is an aeronautical engineer and worked on insect biomimetic flight. I got to meet Michael when he was presenting at a conference in Dayton. He seemed happy that a biologist was finally looking at applying his research instead of engineers. I would say more, but I am offended by your shameless advert and have to take a moment to get over it. Hasta luego. (Extraño a Zaragoza.)

Hehe - the shameless advert was because I thought you'd probably prefer actual science videos over the stuff here :p I won't lie - I'm a bit jealous you got to meet him - I was at SICB this year, but he wasn't an attendee, though I did get to meet some of his current PhD students from his lab (and the USAF!) Great to stumble into someone who also works on biomimetics (or a field similar enough that you meet people who do work on it)!

I used to include the statement "Shamelessly stolen from..." in my powerpoint presentations when listing a reference. Very handy when using the periodic table or other graphics from Science Made Stupid. I thought Michael was fun. Try to have dinner with him. Science is best discussed when the personal stories are included.

I think that at some point in the distant future zoos will disappear. Guys sending dick pics probably have something to do with the prevalence of hook-up culture. Its cool that you are interested in evolution and biology.

RhymesWithFace I haven't heard of any woman admitting she liked nudes, whereas, guys tend to like getting nudes. I chalk it up to differences in gender and brain. You have a lot of channels. I'm more scattered and just throw everything together on one. But that sounds cool and I will subscribe. I remember you said once that you also love statistics, you are very brainy, and I like that. =P I sent you a message about hangouts awhile back, but it must've got lost. Have a good day.

I remember seeing that message and then it completely vanished when I was looking for it to reply and I still can't find it (and being busy I was just a terrible person and didn't send a new one). I suspect it may be lost somewhere on Google+ ... :(
