This strongly reminds me of my first steel hardtail MTB in the early 90‘s (except for the cycling handlebars). But also with straight fork...funny. It’s like with fashion...everything comes back after about 30 years. It was fun back then, it is still fun today!

A less aggressive but still high volume 650b tire, like a WTB Byway/Venture or a Panaracer GravelKing SK, is a perfect medium between the two extremes you focused on in this video. Higher volume for capability, comfort, and flat resistance, but less tread for better rolling resistance on pavement. I do find that while 650b wheels do feel like they don't carry speed as well on pavement and you have to work a bit harder to maintain speed, I have no problem keeping up with buddies of similar fitness on 700c setups. So basically they're faster than they feel, and that's good enough for me!
@adamt195
@adamt195 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Slap some 650x47 horizons or byways on it and see how it feels on the road. One of the pros for 650 over 700 is lighter weight in both the wheels and tires. So if you have the same tire, in the same width, 650b should be basically have the same rolling resistance, but the lighter weight would be easier to accelerate and climb hills, but you have less inertia once you get up to speed, so you can't coast for as long. Basically at the extreme, you could have a 60lb touring bike vs a 16lb race bike, and the touring bike would be a slog climbing up a hill, but going down the hill (assuming the same air resistance/drag) the touring bike would gain much more speed which could help carry you over the next hill.

I’ve run gravel kings on my 650 and could vouch for the statement made. Rather than waste inflators unnecessarily, I used a mini pump to bridge the tire pressure requirement gap of tarmac-gravel-tarmac. It was worth it to stop for a few minutes to regain pedal efficiency.

Big Tires = Big Fun. My bikey buds and I do these "inappropriate bike rides" where we ride our local singletrack on gravel or cx bikes...little did they know that I would show up on my Salsa Journeyman rocking 27.5 x 2.2 (at ~20psi) ... needless to say, I had a blast. Can't wait to see this Poseidon in person.

700, 650b, 29, 27.5 can the industry just pick one unit for measurements?
@Dauntless.steadfast.fortitude
@Dauntless.steadfast.fortitude 4 жыл бұрын
No bike industry can't. Why ? Because of different terrains, applications & size people ( riders ) & most importantly is SALES volume. More options = much more sales. I don't need a rode bike. I don't need a MTB. I don't need ________. I want this, I want that, a bike is a bike unless your road racing, actually jumping dirt ( MTB ) .
@gogocro1
@gogocro1 4 жыл бұрын
gin ngo He isn’t talking about one size, but one unit of measurement for all sizes. Choose inches, millimeters whatever. I like the ISO BSD measurement. It is the measurement of the bead seat diameter in mm. 622mm for 700c and 29” for example. The downside is, even though they have the same BSD, they have different hub widths. Total mess if you ask me.
@Mclovinthedank
@Mclovinthedank 4 жыл бұрын
@@gogocro1 Exactly. Skateboarding does it too, and it drives me nuts. The boards are measured in inches, trucks are in milimeters. I worked in a shop and customers were always confused about getting the right size trucks because they use 2 different units of measurement for things that are made to go together.

My thoughts are that if you are purchasing this bike, you are not going to go all that fast. You're not going to go join a crit and race with this 28lb+ bike. It's made for bikepacking single track and gravel. The manufacturer states that it can be upgraded to fit a 29×2.3 inch tire and wheel set. The X comes with a 700c×40 basically can fit up to a 45 or a 1.7 inch wide tire. With the Redwood you can fit a 700c×58 or up to a 2.3 inch wide tire. They are both different rides. One is more for offroad single track and gravel(Redwood) and the other is leaning toward gravel and on road use. But the Redwood can be made more road worthy with a 29er wheel and tire combination whereas the X isnt really going to be able to be set up with a 650b wheel and tire combination to make it more single track capable. So I chose the Redwood simply for that fact. But hell, with the pricing of these bikes, you could buy both and N+1 just to get you that one more bike. $1,800.00 = two bikes that are both capable machines for different settings. I spent 3 times as much for a road bike back in 2011 that wasnt nearly as capable as either of these and I spent 4 times as much for a mountain bike in 2018 that isnt very good on the road at all. So I think I will be very pleased with my Poseidon Redwood purchase.

Unless you're going through mostly muddy trails, you could try a slightly less aggressive tread, i.e. the GravelKing SK in 650x48 or something like the Maxxis Pace or Continental RaceKing in 27,5x2.0". Personally, and for my area, the 650x45-50 drop bar Kona Sutra is the ultimate do-it-all bike.

Hi. Can you measure the real dia of those wheels+tires and compare to 700? I think it will be smaller just by few mils. For me the biggest downside of 27.5” is lack of gravel tires as this is MTB standard and mostly tires are with muddy tread not a gravel. But volume doing the job and I love it.

How about keeping the knobby on the front and putting a slicker, maybe narrower, tyre in back? I've always found that there's a lot more rolling resistance from the back than the front, probaly because behind is where most of the weight is. What about rear traction? Just deal with it on the rare occasions when it's an issue, encouraged by the fact that for the 99% of the time when it's not an issue, you're blitzing the gravel.

This is where gravel bikes don't make sense to me. If your riding stuff that really requires that much tire a drop bar bike is not the weapon of choice. Sure it looks cool and might be fun at first but with zero suspension and a position meant for smooth roads I think the novelty, unless you're a true sadist, wears off pretty quick. At least, I assume, the Poseidon will be somewhat cost efficient.

Really depends on your local terrain, that bike makes a lot of sense where I live. We have lots of farm roads that are a bit too chunky for a 700c gravel bike with 40mm tires and overkill for a proper mountain bike. I ride a Trek Checkpoint ALR with 27,5x2.2"tires and it's a blast, the more road like geometry and the gearing makes the bike faster than an MTB and the 2.2" tires can tackle the chunkier rocky sections fine. A rigid XC 29er also make sense around here, I own one of those as well but the drop bar is simply more fun.

that is a bad bike company, their bikes are all made in CHINA including all the parts. STAY away from cheap bikes like these. so many are regretting buying this

Very nearly 100% of worldwide bicycle production takes place in China. Country of origin is not a meaningful indicator of quality or lack thereof.
