The dip was good, well done :) and yes for safety reasons you shouldn't dip your head or definitely not jump in, especially alone since it can cause a shock

Respect 👍🏻 9:24 About the head dunking, its not recommended because the cold shock often makes you gasp for air like you noticed. So if you jump in and immediately submerge, you might gasp under the water = bad time. If you wait a moment until your breathing is under control it should be fine. And in case you're interested in doing more of this in the future, I recommend investing in an ice saw, costs about 80€, and combined with a Kaira (Auger in Eng) it will make short work of the ice

I've born in Finland 66 years ago and not gone into avanto yet 🥶I guess in that sense you're more Finnish than me. It does take a lot of sisu to do that.

In addition to being a fun experience, there has been research showing that ice swimming and is good for your circulatory system, as it's basically "workout" for your veins when they dilate and contract. We have this natural method available to us here, but athletes in the States, for example, use cryo cabinets and infrared saunas to replicate this effect.

You are not supposed to dunk 👌🏻 Also good that you went avanto first then sauna. if the other way you should wait a while and not go straight in. Good job and who knows, you might get addicted. It does not matter how long you stay in there as long as you get in. 🥶

Really heroic to do it that way. I usually start with sauna, then dip in to avanto, mayby a small swim and then back to sauna. Repeat if wanted.

Great job! I've had random dips in freezing water for about ten years. But it was like once or twice a winter and I always went to sauna before and after. This winter I started doing it on a regular basis and without the sauna option. I've heard it's healthier and it activates your body to heat itself better. I can't complain! I've done it six times this month and it gets easier all the time. I also never dip the head, but I try to swim a bit.

You did really really well for your first time! 👏🏽 I go 1-3 times a week, usually without a sauna. I have done for five years now. And if no ice then almost every day. I usually stay in 2-3 minutes. If you do it often enough you will start craving it! 💙

That was a very decent dip Dave! it's all about dipping in there for a moment and then getting out and feeling the glorious warmth as your blood circulation kicks into high gear for a moment. :D

I've never went to avanto. I've liked tried with a foot and it is freeezing! Anf for some reason mamy Finns are prone to kaamosmasennus except me. I hate late autumn/early winter but I love winter when it has snow.

😆great job Dave! I have never done avanto, but one year I 'threw off my winter fur' (eg went swimming for the first time that year) in late September. Definitely felt very cold😂 I'm not much for swimming, I get cold very quickly even in summer warmed waters...

I really enjoy the after feeling of the ice dipping. It also have variety of health benefits, so it's not only fun, but healthy too. I can assure, that if you start to do it more often, in time it will be no biggie at all. 😊

I moved to an island near Turku from Lapland few years back and these summers are killing me. It's not even May yet and the warmth is starting to get to me (there are still some snow piles around). Today was +15 outside, had all windows open and a fan blasting the whole day just to stay sane. Getting better with the heat, but still need another fan for the actual summer before they're all sold out everywhere. Still can't wait to swim in the sea again during cooler evenings and at night. 😀

If the ice is not too thick then we always use a chainsaw. Way less work that way :D but we also make it big enough to swim in for a while maybe something like 3 by 4 meters. Great job Dave!

Sauna and the ice cold lake are the BEST combination. You need to get cold to really appreciate the heat. I remember the first time I was told to about this the Finn explaining it said "yes you go into the hole in the ice in the lake and maybe your first time have someone with you in case you go into shock and you pass out and fall under the water..." So yeah, much siisu is needed!

I have lived in Finland my whole life and i haven't never gone to avanto. (Well last year i swam in the sea in early May [with my clothes on]and it was very, very cold)

The "kaira" sure works for making an avanto, but many people just use a chainsaw with a long blade, makes it really fast to make a hole in the ice.

Any pork sausage is usually good! The Finnish "grillimakkarat" isn't ideal though. Usually go for the proper raw butchers sausages 🙂

Yes you absolutely should not dip your head under. You risk drowning as the cold can make you unconscious.

It is proven that going to avanto swimming regularly has many health benefits. So it is not just another silly thing Finns do! Some people have to be careful with it though. For example I cannot do it because of my heart condition. So be glad you can do that 🙂

Well, technically this is NOT YOUR FIRST TIME, as you were "HOT SAUNA TO ICE SWIM CHALLENGE" about three years ago. There were a thin layer of ice, and that counts! Water underneath that ice is near zero. But, it is nice that you re-visited ice swimming and did it the "right way" this time around.

Nope! Going sauna first and then going to avanto is bad for health. You SHOULD NOT do that! If you go sauna first, you have to let your body's temperature get a bit lower before going to avanto otherwise you could get a shock.
