Great video Mark. really excited to see what the ph will look like maybe a few weeks after introducing it to the tank once it's buffered it nicely. Overall, great way to do it. I bet you're glad you made it easy to swap out those bags otherwise it would have been a pain to remove the soil manually
@MarkShellyAquatics
@MarkShellyAquatics Жыл бұрын
Yeah, real glad especially since that ista was so horrible, with that stuff its time to change out soil just as tank is getting established. Hope to get a year out this brightwell, it sure is nice at setup.

Brightwell is great stuff, 1 to 1 1/2 year of life, some tell me 2, but I change even 1 1/2 years like clock work, no issues, and no ammonia leach, so you can add it into an established tank. No issues.
@MarkShellyAquatics
@MarkShellyAquatics Жыл бұрын
Thats great to hear. That was how I ended up with that ista stuff, no ammonia, I dont want ammonia so I can change out the substrate like I did, only thing being really planned on switching out a couple bags at a time, but that ista stuff was used up so fast and started going so quickly I just wanted to get rid of it. Glad I went with Brightwell.

I'm always so scared to mess with substrate in an established shrimp tank. Wishing you all the best of luck with this tank.

Yeah, I set this whole thing up to work with the filter bags. Original plan is to only swap out a few bags at a time, but this ista soil is pretty crappy and I wanted to get rid of it.

I don't think lava rock is a problem I think the high flow depletes the substrate fast according to shrimp mania
@MarkShellyAquatics

So far the bright well has been holding close to 5.0 since I did these changes, the ista stuff was going downhill after 3 months. Think this video was 4 or 5 months ago. I dont think the lava rock had much to do with it either though, brightwell is definitely a much better soil.

such a great video. i do agree that the rocks do do something funny with the water. i found my caridina tanks without lava rocks do better, maybe it's a plecebo effect. I've been told the easter soil ph 5.5 is so so, but i can;t get brightwell here, so i'lll stick with the proven tried and true og, ada amazonia.. Speaking of whihc, i just ordered 30 more mesh bags, will fill them up and swap some substrate, been using this method for the past 3-5 years and glad to see others doing it also,! cant wait for your next update! my red fancy tiger tank is going nuts, took out 100 3 months ago and have over 150 babies now, these breed non stop, but the patterns are from super high grade to non presentable, so i;ve got to cull better

Yeah man, its my first venture into caridina, but feel like I've done everything about a good as I can, lol so I'm blaming the ista. Think Shrimp Mania was having deaths in one of his tanks with it. Seems like its only 100% the first 3 months, after 6 months its time to start removing it. I was really pleased with the first step of brightwell, see how good it does and how long it lasts. Brightwell seems pretty dang good, no cloudiness, no tds, and ph went down immediately. Woke up this morning to a bunch of molts, no deaths, and a couple more berried females. Really hoping to get production of caridina down, so then I can worry about culling and grades lol. Have plans to get at least 4 more caridina tanks

@MarkShellyAquatics that's awesome to hear. Don't stop at 4, hehe, I'm trying to figure our my limit when it's too much, currently have 22 tanks but bought 12 more but hesitant on setting them up

@RWAquariumPages going to take down my 110 gallon stock tank guppy pond I have had going for years and years, way before I ever owned a shrimp lol. Going to try to do a rack of 8 or 12 20g long tanks. 4 will be for caradina, others, well I make my living breeding neos, but still wanna spread my wings with caradina. Just wanna get it all figured out before I drop a fortune on good shrimp.

@@MarkShellyAquatics yep had my first caridina about year ago and got this. I got babies in all my caridina tanks about 6 now. You dont have to worry about the ammonia leeching you have with some other soils. Grant Eder has it in most of his tanks and said some have lasted for years without changing soil. You got the right size too, you want XF or Fine so babies doing fall through. The shrimp will pick up the little balls of soil and feed through them. Think my pH sits around 6.2

Yeah, the no ammonia thing is huge with how I wanna run my caradina tanks, just trying to get a method down before I go too far down that hole with the caradina

@pelhamsaquatics its just the ista stuff is horrible. It did keep ph down, but after 6 months it is toast, why the tds is creeping back up. Seems like most people say that stuff is only 100% for 3 months, by 6 month its past its prime, and its fully depleted by 9 months, pretty bad. Others have said they just don't get the best breeding with the ista on top of its short life span. And when I added it when I first set the tank up, my tds went from around 120 to 250 and that aint gonna work with shrimp in the tank.

The substrate has to be changed at some point?? And with caridina shrimp do you have to fill the whole tank with Ro water and then remineralize it all?
@MarkShellyAquatics
@MarkShellyAquatics Жыл бұрын
At some point it. You mix water in separate container and then pump into tank, I drip it in with a float valve.

@@MarkShellyAquatics I loved your way of keeping the substrate in bags for easier removal! I will be copying that if I ever have a go at caridinas! At the moment i'm a begginer with shrimps, so I'm starting out with neos :) I did an oopsie and added cherry shrimp to a new planted tank that was only a week old, also got them without knowing anything about shrimp... Surprisingly they did amazing and started breeding within a few weeks (they were mature when i got them), I started out with 6 cherries and now there must be like 30+. I think i might be just lucky because there has been no casualties I fell in absolute love with these critters and have been doing alot of research in how to care for them :D
