Nice! Good morning Kelly! Even though I haven't been to bed yet. Crazy that I lived in Florida all my life and only found out about this trail when Dixie did it! Looking forward to watching your journey! Welcome back! Enjoy!

Wow, you’ve already started the Florida trail! Didn’t realize it’s over 1000 miles. You mentioned the swamp has tons of water & tons of mud. You failed to mention the swamp has tons of alligators too! Wish you the best of luck Kelly Hays!

For those thinking of attempting this section of trail, know that this represents very low water levels (this is low even for winter, which is often the low point which is why people often start the trail in December and January - its not just to beat the heat). Normally, if you go at higher water levels, it can be waist deep water for miles on end. You will not see any of that vegetation shown in that video. It will just be water as far as the eye can see with the bigger trees sticking out until you get out of that section. The high ground at those camps is often just barely above the waterline. You either have to just get lucky that the water is not too high when you attempt that section, or you can do researc in the form of pulling up the daily water levels from the hundreds of water level monitoring stations that the Florida government and diffetent water districts keeps track of and publishes on their websites. The levels at specific stations will often be a good indication of how swamped this section is, as well as some other nightmare swamp sections when you get up by the panhandle.

how do you avoid getting attacked by a Gator?? WTF?
@alexjohnson6462
@alexjohnson6462 Жыл бұрын
People will often tell you that gators will not normally bother with humans as long as you are not going out of your way to aggravate them (and in the winter, they tend to be less active because all they really want to do is sun on the banks to warm themselves up), but that advice only holds so much weight in situations where people are going through this section in high water (not shown in this video. Watch other videos. The water gets real high for miles on end). There's a big difference between passing by the gators on the banks (and you'll probably pass by 60 to 100 gators on a full through hike) whete they will mostly just ignore you, especially in winter.... versus being in the water with them where you are wading through miles of water. There is nothing you can do. You are in their element. Only thing you can do is just always be watchful for movement underwater, and also the sounds they occasionally make when they see prey. They'll normally leave you alone, but if they want you in high water sections, they got you. Not much you can do about it. Don't let anyone tell you they never attack. It is not often, but they do. ☺️

this is true, normally the trail is extremely flooded the first let's say 10 miles. Rain boots can be useful

Completing a full thru hike of the Florida Trail is still on my list of things to do! Lived there for more than 20 years, but only in the last few have I gotten into hiking, and I've done about 70 miles of the trail in the Lake City area. Those first few days from the southern terminus are some wet ones for sure! You seem to be in great spirits and enjoying the trail so far! Have fun, be safe, listen to your body and enjoy the trail! Hike on!

First of all. I'm glad I stumbled on to your videos. They are great. I've had some jobs in wet environments and they make some pretty lightweight waterproof boots these days. I'm curious why I haven't seen anyone wearing something like that for the swamp stretch. I Live in Florida and will probably do parts of the trail while I plan my 2025 At thru hike. These are very informative so I know what to expect.
