I love the music in Donkey Kong. The balloons equal a life, spell KONG you get a life and 100 bananas you get a life. You also get different allies, a Frog, an Ostrich, a Sword Fish and a Rhino by they are great additions especially in bonus stages.

Island Swing and Aquatic Ambiance are such great tracks! Reminds me of childhood even though I played this game as a 20-year-old, a decade ago. Only Yasunori Mitsuda's Chrono Trigger soundtrack gave me that kind of similar vibe/feeling.

Fun fact, we have Donkey Kong because of Popeye. The creator of the character originally had made a game where Popeye had to rescue Olive Oyl from Bluto… unfortunately after making this game he was denied the rights to the characters. He changed the characters sprites and Bluto became a strangely named ape named Donkey Kong.

Oh and originally in 1981, Donkey Kong squared off against an unnamed carpenter hero, who eventually became jumpman, and then finally as we know him today, a plumber named Mario.

So, one of DKC's hidden mechanics is that if you bounce off at least 8 enemies without touching the ground, you will get awarded extra lives (just like Super Mario games of the same era).

Awesome gameplay! I love the rideable animals in this game and the awesome soundtrack. You should also play Donkey Kong Country 2, Donkey Kong Country 3, Donkey Kong Country Returns and Tropical Freeze in the future. Those are really good games! Here's an interesting trick to get stuff that's hovering above bottomless pits on the DKC games. Do the cartwheel move and once you fall off the edge of the pit, hold the same cartwheel button also use for running without letting go and immediately jump in the opposite direction still holding. If you did it right, you'll be able to grab the Kong letter over the gap without dying. Make sure you do the cartwheel as you fall into the hole though and immediately jump back into the platform. You can also roll or cartwheel into enemies instead of jumping on top of them to defeat them. Not all enemies will get defeated that way but most can. That's something this game has that the 2D Mario games didn't.

This was one of the games I competed in for the Blockbuster World Championships way back in the day. Was able to practice it briefly beforehand and was in first place at my store after that round (didn't end so hot though). That competition used a unique version of the cartridge that score-ified most actions like completing levels or gaining lives, and has been sold on Ebay recently for anywhere from ~$2000 to $9999. Other than that, was never a huge fan of these games, since platforming games were already way too common on NES/SNES/Game Boy, so they don't hold the nostalgia for me as they do for many (other than the music, which still holds up).

At the beginning of the level, there's a barrel that you can barely see it, but you have to jump on the tires very high, and then you can get the K letter in the bonus stage. Even so, sometimes the KONG letters are hidden in the ground.

this was a surprise to see you gave early access to this i was actually going to ask you about it but forgot this is going to be a blast watching you play this game, i can tell you i never made past the mine carts because the rest of this all new to me, i do love how each level is pretty short in length it's just a matter of getting past all these traps and enemies. and i can't remember off the top of my head but i thought Donkey Kong had a slap attack were you could slap the ground and defeat enemies that way as well. anyway thanks for the early access on this i haven't really ever taken advantage of it mainly it seems like you are doing it for GTA but you did have a couple God Of War episodes you had early access to so hopefully you have enough members now it's becoming beneficial to you to do stuff like this

i prefer donkey kong country 2. the technical improvement comparated to dinkey kong country 1 is like supermario bros 1 comparated to super mario bros 3! more rich gameplay, more inspired level and map, more kong member to communicate with, and a bonus world, which you can only get by collection all coins, which provide an exploration aspect that you cannot find in any other 2d platformer. obviously when you win the game, you have to play again to unlock every secret, and then you discover a second game, because you get new levels, but also because you explore instead of rushing. some bonus are tricky to access. so it's a creative way to make the game harder. the music, the character of dixie, the bosses. dkc2 is just perfection. it doesn't mean that other episodes are bad, but they can't reach that quality. even the 3 was neglected, cause helf of the studio was working on donkey kong 64 at this time. i love your mindset by the way, you're calm and patient, quite skilled. lot of smart and funny comment. this is very pleasant to watch. hope you enjoy your life as a youtuber. you've such a sweet voice, it's quite pleasant to hear you. better than asmr.

@@douglasmurphy3266 nowadays games don't give so much care to each details, such as character quantity of animations when you don't control the character. it gives personnality and background. since today games have no deepness, no personnality, people naturally find theses old generations titles much more interesting to play. the way games gets easier and easier makes you feels dumb when you plays. there is no satisfaction to win an easy game.

@@Housestationlive In 1994, if a game was hard, it was the only piece of media you had for the weekend, month, or possibly more if you bought it. If you couldn't beat the minecart level, you'd pick it back up in a week, and over the course of months build up the knowledge and skill to beat the game. Super Metroid didn't tell you sh*t to do. You came back to it, and you powered through to the next puzzle, it became a little side project in your life. Now, everything ever created is accessible with very little effort. People tend to just lose interest and move on to something else in a matter of seconds if it isn't impressing the hell out of them or it poses some level of frustration.

I guess it’s the principle of the matter, huh? A 38 year old with multiple jobs is definitely playing it wrong, not spending weeks on the game like you all did when you were in grade school. @@bunnytails Thanks, you too🙃 The essence of this type of game lies in learning through trial and error, not simply completing levels. You will resent the lack of skill gained through repetition, reaching the end will feel more and more like a chore than an enjoyable challenge because of that. Your heresy shall be forgiven by all the yes-man, I mean followers, you have. I simply don't enjoy watching someone brute force a game just for the sake of claiming they've played a classic title. But please don´t take my words personally. It's your channel, your approach to gaming, your 38-year-old life. Feel free to do things your way, just as I choose whether or not to watch a specific type of content.

@@lalocompi completely understandable. I too have preferences when it comes to what I watch. What I do take issue with is your language which implies there is a right or wrong way to play games. That comes off as elitist and gatekeepy. I am glad to report I definitely enjoyed the game and the challenge. And believe me, there was a very sufficient amount of trial and error. I don’t think it’s possible to complete the game without learning unless one is saving inside the levels at every jump. I do intend to go back on my own time and play through again, since this is one of the few platformers I can really say I’d like to come back to. Just please don’t tell Rare I used the save states that Nintendo provided to me. I wouldn’t want to upset them that I played their game and got introduced to the amazing David Wise through such dirty means. Edit: I just realized save stating is just a faster way to achieve farming lives! Exact same outcome. Haha.
