Today we're building an early jet aircraft, likely from the 50's or late 40's (maybe even early 60s? maybe not.) But I hope you like it regardless!

You should call it the “FA-2 Harpy”. F for fighter, A for attacker(since it has a heavy 30mm), 2 because it’s the second plane you built, and harpy because of the wing span/ aspect ratio. And harpy eagles are pretty powerful birds.

Thanks for the shoutout! Fantastic airplane, I love the way it looks! P.S, your engine doesn't need an intake to work. I almost never use the in-game intakes. Also, you need to change your pressure damp to a lower number on your control surfaces. It's the value that "compresses" your elevators at high speeds and makes you turn slower. Hope this can help! It reminds me a lot of one of my old designs. Can't wait to see what you come up with in the future!

Once you're more comfortable with this game, and confident in your abilities, I'd love to see a modern stealth fighter, a 'we have F-22 at home' if you will. As someone who watches Messier82, I plan to suggest the 'Legally Distinct Raptor' to him also, it would be neat to see a Novice vs Expert take on the same build.

F22 is a fighter
@chuckg333
@chuckg333 Жыл бұрын
@callumwright7459 The F-22 is actually an air superiority fighter, favoring higher maneuverability and performance over pure speed. An aircraft like the Mig-31 is an intercepter, due to it being able to fly well over Mach 2.5 which allows it to meet incoming threats very quickly, but having lower maneuverability. The F-22 uses its thrust-vectoring capabilities and stealth to win air-to-air engagements and clear the sky for other friendly aircraft over potentially hostile environments, but has a much lower top speed of around Mach 2.2. Both aircraft are designated as fighters and can be used for the other role if necessary, but we’re built to fit the specific requirements of their respective missions.
@callumwright7459
@callumwright7459 Жыл бұрын
@@chuckg333 Yup, you're absolutely right, the Raptor is an 'Air Superiority Fighter', but does also serve a secondary role as an Interceptor. Of the two definitions I provided for 'Interceptor' the first is more historical, but does describe the F22 fairly accurately, the Second is more akin to the modern strategic sense of the word and is as you described. To be fair, I may delete my previous reply and amend my original post to avoid further confusion.

Nice plane ! I love the 1950s style you went for ! That said, to improve handling, I think you could move the engine more towards the "inside" of the plane (closer to the wings) as, I think, the farther away heavy objects are from the center of mass the harder it'll be for the control surfaces to change the angle of the plane on the corresponding axis (although I do not know if it is taken into account in the game's engine). An other suggestion I'd make (just to push the realistic aspect of the plane) is to change the placement of the guns to under the fuselage (kind of in a slight aerodynamic bulge for example. Or even suspended if it's possible in the game, Phantom style !) behind the air intakes, as jet engine don't really enjoy breathing in fumes from guns, makes them have a tantrum and suddenly decide to behave as fancy and expensive hair dryers rather than actual engines with usable thrust. But this last part is just nitpicking, it looks cooler with nose mounted guns in my opinion :D As for the name, as it is inspired from several planes from several nations, I suggest: PB-144 Skylance "PB" would refer to the "MD-450 Ouragan", as "MD" stands for Marcel Dassault, the creator of Dassault, a french aerospace company. So "PB" would stand for PatchBits ! The "-144" would refer to the "-86" part of the Sabre's name, as to why 144, well your subscriber count was at 14.4k when I saw this video so, instead of a date, why not use a subscriber count to date the plane in the channel's history ? :D "Skylance" would refer to the kind of names Brits/US planes have, like the Sea Vixen, Sea Hunter, STARStreak (not a plane but still, it flies !) Edit: Forgot to precise, but I discovered your channel thanks to your two Flyout videos and I gotta say it is an instant subscribe ! I'll proceed to binge the rest of the channel while flying in IL-2:BoS :D

The placement of those guns would probably cause issues with the engine sucking in fumes, and the engines of those era REALLY hated gun fumes. Even modern jet engines don't really like them.
@PatchBits
@PatchBits Жыл бұрын
Didn't even consider that!
@uberschnilthegreat22
@uberschnilthegreat22 Жыл бұрын
@@PatchBits Yeah, granted, it's not as bad as the MiG-9, which literally had the 37mm gun sticking RIGHT THROUGH the middle of the intake, but flameouts are probably gonna be an issue for your jet. I suggest placing the guns on the underbelly of the fuselage in a gun pod behind the intakes, which will both reduce the risk of a flameout (if you also add some extra surfacing to shield the bottom of the intakes from the fumes), and allow you to move that ammo drum closer to the CoG, though it may need to be made smaller so the drum doesn't interfere with the flow of the intakes inside the airframe. Cannons of this era for British aircraft typically only carried around 450-500 rounds in total.

You almost made a EXACT replica of the british hawker hunter, which was the best performing post-war aircraft. It could go around 1100km/h and had almost the same turn rate. It also had 4 30mm cannons. Fun fact: the plane is still in use by the zimbabwe airforce.

The missile knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn’t. By subtracting where it is from where it isn’t, or where it isn’t from where it is (whichever is greater), it obtains a difference, or deviation. The guidance subsystem uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the missile from a position where it is to a position where it isn’t, and arriving at a position where it wasn’t, it now is. Consequently, the position where it is, is now the position that it wasn’t, and it follows that the position that it was, is now the position that it isn’t. In the event that the position that it is in is not the position that it wasn’t, the system has acquired a variation, the variation being the difference between where the missile is, and where it wasn’t. If variation is considered to be a significant factor, it too may be corrected by the GEA. However, the missile must also know where it was. The missile guidance computer scenario works as follows. Because a variation has modified some of the information the missile has obtained, it is not sure just where it is. However, it is sure where it isn’t, within reason, and it knows where it was. It now subtracts where it should be from where it wasn’t, or vice-versa, and by differentiating this from the algebraic sum of where it shouldn’t be, and where it was, it is able to obtain the deviation and its variation, which is called error.

Maybe the gravity center is too forward if you want turn ratio at low/medium speed, but this aircraft seems stable, what is good. Also, if you want an aircraft with low speed maneuverability (what would be essential for a close support striker) you may have to change the wings into something less angular, as the wings of a Meteor or a Shooting Star, but them will be a compromise with speed. Other option is to build your elevators on the fuselage (as your wings are mounted on the bottom) and copy the F-86 design (also, can try the full moving elevators). Focus it as a pure fighter as in that time (1944-1954) the tendency was to build more focused fighters. Nice plane anyway. I wouldn't change it's aeros, just increase the cannons firing ratio, place a nice center slot for a big bomb and maybe an air brake to use it as dive bomber. Maybe in the future a Mk2 with a little stronger engine to use it as an early cold war era interceptor. No missiles in any version... just a pure breed 1st gen jet fighter.

Don’t forget that the majority of max speeds for these subsonic jets was done at altitude. 950 TAS on the deck for a late 1940s jet is really fast. This is the one area I like more about SimplePlanes so far than flyout, you can edit the drag points and activation of air breaks in XML to give it more realistic acceleration, max speed, and energy bleed off. I hope these features will be available in flyout too

For non-afterburning jet aircraft, they actually perform best at sea level since there is a lot more air for the engine. As altitude increases, engine power loss has a greater effect on performance than the benefits of less drag would give. Piston engines actually perform similarly with power loss unless they use some kind of forced air induction, like a supercharger or turbocharger (devices that can feed the engine much denser air than what is found at high altitude). Afterburning engines (and rocket engines) do not suffer much performance loss with increasing altitude, as long as the afterburner is being used, so they can take advantage of the reduced drag at these altitudes.

Name idea: Supermarine Spadroon F.1 Context: A Spadroon is a light sword used by the british military during the late 17th century and early 18th century. It is also common for british aircraft designers to choose names for their planes that start with the same letter or letters as the manufacturers name also starts with so therefore the "Spadroon" would be made by Supermarine. The "F.1" means that it is a Fighter and the first model of said fighter.

A little advice, real life jet engines tend to be a lot further forward than you might expect, with a long exhaust tube. This will let you get the centre of gravity further forward if you need it! Just have a look at a cutaway of the supermarine swift, it's engine is really close to the middle of the fuselage.

P standing for PatchBits (pretty self explanatory), F standing for Fighter (as you said it was modeled after some early jet fighters), 2 because it is the second thing you’ve made, and Mk II because it took you two tries.
