I'm in Greece (until i finally move... within this lifetime hopefully?! procrastination king, nvm my rambling 😅) so i am too, rather used to hot and humid summers, and i sweat easily which i haaate, but the key is staying constantly hydrated like you realized, i also wash my face-shoulders literally every few hours when i'm at home, stay in shade, shower, eat light and refreshing stuff (fruit, vegetables), avoid crowded places -easy to do here 😂-, walk slower/rest if i have to 😌

@@ooen Great advice! Thank you! In my early teens, I visited an aunt one Summer. She lived in Louisiana - Her back yard was a huge swamp. At first, I thought the heat was from the jet engines... Nope. I had three-weeks of never being able to dry off after a shower. Wet and sticky for three weeks. I was homesick for California's weather!.

Lots of water, do things in the shade and under ceiling fans whenever possible, and frequent stops into places with aircon to cool off for 5 - 10 minutes.

It is important to remember that water can help keep you hydrated, but you need salt and electrolytes to actually rehydrate because that's what you are losing in sweat. You can keep the little pouches of drink mix to add to any water you already have. and they do make ones that are sugar free.

I live in the deserts of New Mexico and there are a lot of salty kinds of snacks sold, specifically big pickles and pickle juice. When you get heat exhaustion, you're not only low on water, but also low on salt, so not only having water, but also sometimes taking a small shot of pickle juice can help because it puts back the body's salt levels. And by a shot, I mean a literal shot glass filled with pickle juice or just a small bottle (like the five hour energy size bottles) of pickle juice. Theres also a candy called Limon Powder, which is a lemon flavored salt candy, I like Limon salt candy and it helps combat the heat a bit.

I also participated in a long festival and had symptoms like heat stroke. I felt dizzy and felt like collapsing. So when I attend festivals away from home, I always bring dry ice in a backpack-style cooler with cold drinks and ice slurries(リポビタン アイススラリー). To prevent heatstroke, one ice slurry per hour is especially recommended.😉

Oh no! I'm sorry for the bout of heat exhaustion. You definitely looked on the edge that night. Glad you were able to enjoy the festival, though! There are only a couple of times in the year around the Bay Area California for huge and crowded celebrations like this (New Year's, 4th of July and such). Blows me away that there's so much of this in the summer in Japan. I definitely want to take in some festivals there. ...with fan in hand, of course. Thanks Sarah!

I had a heat exhaustion incident several years ago at an outdoor work event where it was 87° F and I was sitting in the shade, but just sweating profusely. A co-worker finally said I wasn’t looking well, so I made my way inside where it was air conditioned and I was suddenly feeling dizzy and nauseas. I had 3-4 glasses of ice water and then made my way home, but I was feeling dizzy w/ just slight nausea for maybe 4-5 hours. It was scary, so don’t ignore symptoms.

It is good that you're better now! I know that I am not that used to hot summer days. I always take water bottle with me. I remember that one of my old friend who had lived in hot areas, reminded me that actually hot drink is easier for body, because when you drink cold water, your body makes more work.. (temperature difference..) so he said that it was healthier to drink hot tea. Of course, clothing colors also make difference. White reflects and black absorbs..

Love your videos. I noticed that you had a backpack on, one trick I learned from going to Disneyworld in Florida was to freeze the water bottles overnight and put them in the backpack so I'd have a something to help cool me down while out in the heat and it would thaw in time for me and the family to use through out the day.

Thank you for this lovely vlog Sarah! Heat exhaustion is terrible. My biggest shock of going to Japan for the first was by far the heat. Sure, I'm Swedish, I am used to fresh, dry scandinavian air with mild summers around 20-24 degrees... But I also naively thought that Japan had "similar" climate to Sweden as it has four seasons (lack of research). That couldn't be further from the truth 😅 and it definitely feelt far more like a tropical climate. I went in October, it was around 30-34 degrees outside, The humidity was insane, and my body just wasn't ready for it. I hiked up several mountains, enjoying nature, but THAT HEAT was SO intense. Pocari Sweat was something I had to drink quite regularly to keep myself properly hydrated ... At first I thought, "do I really need this?" . But yes, It actually serves a proper purpose in Japan. Later I met up with a friend of mine South Korea. Same weather, she wore Jeans, I have no idea how she managed, but she seemed perfectly comfortable. I on the other hand was absolutely destroyed even when not doing anything, just sitting in the shadows. Next time, I will definitely go in winter! I am telling myself that I will be far better equipped to the cold 😅

Hi Sarah, I’ve been to the Aomori festival (on my first trip to japan in 2016) and I was starstruck by the georgeous spectacle (and heat)! It is absolutely worth the journey up there! The same year I unexpectedly stumbled across a festival in Nikko thanks to the host of my guesthouse, very small an very few tourists. Didn’t relly like Nikko though. In 2019 in Osaka I ended up in hospital. I can barely remember anything from that day, overheating is not pleasant indeed!

As a person who cannot stand the heat, one thing I cannot leave my house without is a neck fan! It’s a game changer, you don’t have to hold it, it just hangs in your neck and blow refreshing wind to your face, and a good one can last to 3hours, also I always have those cooling gel patch people use for fever handy just in case. an extra handheld fan, and a manual fan, just in case the first two run out of battery. and in case of extreme heat, an instant ice pack 😂 the ones you punch and it turns into ice. I also used to hate pocari sweat now I always have them just in case

Had heat stroke once in the desert. It was strange. I felt drunk, and I realized my uniform wasn't drenched in sweat, and it was totally dry. My hearing was like fading out, and I swore I could hear my heartbeat. I started shouting at people cuz I couldn't hear them. I was totally delirious, trying to sing Sinatra songs, and they had to drag me off somewhere to rehydrate. Good times! lol You can avoid sugars, but in those temperatures, have some salt in your drink (you won't taste it)!

#1 tip: stay hydrated. Even if you are a small woman, if you are drinking less then 3L of water a day, you are dehydrated. I drink around 4 in summer and up to 5 or more if exercising. Drink water with a high ph and good mineralization or you will flush out more minerals than you need to.

This looks great, thanks for sharing! This past July I went to a couple of festivals, but really enjoyed the Uchiwa festival in Kumagaya. That was amazing! Normally, Kumagaya is supposed to be the hottest and most humid in summer, but we lucked out with the last day of the festival being mild for a Japanese summer. I've been to Asia a few summers, but it's always shocking to experience. Stay safe out there.

You need to be hydrating really well before you're outside and when you're feeling overheated you can't be wearing loose clothes instead of tight clothes and if you're sweating a lot then you need to drink a shit ton of water and potentially drinking something with electrolytes for sure. If you're drinking a ton of water and you're not needing to run to the bathroom that means you're dehydrated so that might be a good gauge to measure with at first. Also you need to make sure you're hydrating really well after the fact if you have any heat stroke symptoms

1. Being able to smell people around you is not a good thing! I was already grossed out from the Tokidoki Traveller "Top 10 Overrated Things in Japan" vid upload about how the water at TeamLab smelled of feet. I can't stand the smell of my own feet, so why would I want to smell other people's feet? Pass the chlorine please. 2. Stay hydrated. If you are sweating buckets then replenish the electrolytes. Lack of electrolytes will cause you to feel ill or dizzy. Drink a sports drink with electrolytes, or, if you don't care for sugar, even coconut water, or apple juice. A bit of salt also helps. As the Camelbak motto goes: Hydrate or Die! 3. In the summer heat, nothing beats 100% linen. 4. You know what's better than fanning yourself in the sweltering summer heat? Having someone else fan YOU in the hot sweltering summer heat. Maybe have one of the Tokyo Creative people come with you next time. "Hey how would you like to come with me to the summer festival and help me film?" "Sure. Did you want me to hold the camera?" "No, I want to fan me the entire time." Probably won't have a lot of takers! Not even Jordan who seems to be pretty easy going and affable.
