My son at one year old sat on his cake 😂😂 We thought we’d do that cake smash that always seems to give cute photos of kids shovelling handfuls of cake into their little mouths, but my son had zero interest in eating the cake and was more interested in sitting on the cake, turning the cake into a pillow, laying his belly on the cake, and poking all the decorative sugar flowers into holes on the cake. (It was a cheap store bought sponge cake I decorated in buttercream, so the point was to let him do whatever he wanted and just capture the photos)

Clients like this are a mystery to me. Why are they so uncompromising? Are they trying to get a cake for free? That's what I'm always thinking about people who throw tantrums over things that don't really matter in the end. The client in the story got a nice cake that's more fitting of the size of her party. What the f was she going on and on about, calling you and berating you like that? *smh* Sorry you had to go through that, Mimo. Love your work.

@@destyniiskywalker exactly! I would’ve been so unhappy having to pay for something I didn’t want. I know the feeling of expecting one thing and receiving another. @@destyniiskywalker The thing is, in this scenario what she wanted was not physically possible. Being "super specific" can be a bad thing sometimes, because you can't always HAVE exactly what you want and you are bound to be disappointed in those cases. For example - you cannot have a tall, three layer, ten inch cake that only serves forty. That is not going to happen. Where the baker went wrong here, as she already said, was by not EXPLAINING "Hey, this isn't actually how cake size works, I can't physically do this. Here's what I can do, which of these options do you prefer?". That is all she could have done differently. She was never going to be able to give the customer exactly what she wanted.

What a lovely cake. My mum use to bake and decorate cakes when I was very small. She taught baking in the Philippines. If she were alive still, she’d love watching your videos. Someone returned one of her wedding cakes, and the buyer didn’t like it. She cut the cakes in pieces and gave it away to my classmates. We were the happiest kindergarten class! As a grocery store cake decorator: OMG people have NO IDEA what size cake they want. I have people come in all the time and point at a cake that says "1/4 sheet" right on the label and call it a "1/2 sheet." Or I'll make an order for a full sheet and when they come to pick it up say "That's way too big" and come to find out they thought our 1/2 sheets were called full sheets and the person taking the order didn't tell them a full sheet feeds 40-80 people. I've learned to just ask how many people are at the party and then point at those sizes in the case because otherwise people will just spout off the most random sizes and then be upset that the cake is the wrong size.

I was a cake decorator at a bakery for 8 years. The many horror stories of moms having meltdowns over their kids cake. 😅 I remember one woman who chose a pink & purple flower design but told me to make it purple & orange. Told her it was a bold choice & wouldn’t look as good as the original. No issues when she picked it up but apparently I went to college with her friend who posted photos of the cake & party. I liked the post assuming their party was awesome but the mom recognized me & took it upon herself to comment all over our mutual friend’s post that the cake I made was the ugliest thing she ever ordered even though it was how she asked it to look. 😬 I had to block the mom cause she started harassing me online. 😒

One of the things I love about you, Mimo, is you are totally upfront with us and you tell it like it is. Whether you're admitting your own mistakes or faults or someone else's. You are not mean or snarky, you don't say this freakin B or anything of THAT nature when referring to somebody else's faults or mistakes. But you don't pull your punches. Everyone has faults and everyone makes mistakes. When an adult makes mistake and they realize it or it's pointed out to them they apologize and fix it to the best of their ability. That's what adults do. And when somebody else makes a mistake or shows a fault, we should realize that everyone does it and have compassion. If compassion is not possible at least don't take them to task for such a human condition. And I have to admit that blue fondant on the cake looked beautiful!! @@sarahhenning5484 Because the baker desided to change the design without informing the buyer before making it? Any complications that alters the price or product should be presented to the buyer, always. Deciding to do it on your own because it would be "too big" in your personal opinion, means you have stopped serving the customer and started serving your own vanity. Why is too much cake a problem? Maybe they want a big one and would like to give some out or just keep and have the next day, or maybe the cake was special the way it was supposed to be for whatever reason and changing it would "lessen" what made it special. Again, not up to the baker, but the customer. I think some people just want to yell and scream and throw a fit no matter what. You clearly were trying to make it right and be reasonable but for some people, they just want to stay mad. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I'm sorry but that logic is completely skewed. Why should I, the person paying for a service, be forced to compromise with the person I paid to do the service when the person I paid de ides to arbitrarily change what I requested because it was "too much cake," and didn't inform me of this change until AFTER the cake was already made with no time to get it fixed or reordered. That would be likelbeing asked to compromise someone painting your house pink when you requested blue, and then told you should just accept it because, blue would make your house too dark.

maybe not very family friendly, but in business you hear the term “CYA” thrown around a lot because of stories like this one. i think most people have at least one CYA story, if not multiple. if anyone just joining the workforce reads this, remember that if you ever have questions or need confirmation from someone, a call or email could save you hours/days/weeks/MONTHS and many thousands of dollars down the line. NEVER be afraid to ask for clarification! CYA!

What you should do now is, make a sketch of the cake beforehand, show or send it to client, have them initial it, this way, that's your proof that this was acceptable to client. I hope u got a 50% deposit before doing any work. People sometimes try to get cute when it comes to payment .. They pretend to not like something in order to get it for less money, or no money at all. I learned the hard way as well. Don't do any work till everything is paid for, or, don't hand over finished product until cash is in your hand!! If u think someone with turn into a problem client, NEVER accept credit card payments. They will try to dispute charge!! Cash, cash, cash!!

I used to install carpet. One day as we were finishing the job the husband came and said "You guys did great. Here's the check. But I was hoping you'd be gone by 6. My wife will be here any minute, and I just want to warn you, she WILL find something she isn't happy about. Just roll with it." Sure enough wifey came home, pointed to a random spot and said "You need to fix this!" As I asked her what exactly she would like the husband came up behind her, touched his nose and winked at me. I twiddled my thumbs near that spot until she was happy. There was zero rhyme or reason to her. Karens.

I'm the mom who is like "i just want the big one i don't care if I'm feeding 6 and it's 110 servings, my mouth will be happy for many days!" Ok so for real I usually do purchase the largest size though i don't have a custom cake person. My reasoning is it freezes well and it actually saves me money in not buying other desserts or sweets. We do the celebration with candles etc then we all have a serving, we leave a little out bc i have teens who magically eat in the night like mice, and i cut and place the rest into like family size containers, and freeze. It works for us and that way when my brother comes for dinner on the weekends, I've got a dessert if he wants and if he doesn't more for the rest of us! That said, if everyone's birthdays are close together like we have quite a few cake events in spring with mother's Day, two birthdays and fathers day, so we just get sizes we need... But i do love to buy in "bulk". A deep freezer and good quality containers are such a blessing when you're on a tight budget! 🤗

Eh tbh, I kind of understand that woman. You go into something expecting it to be a certain way, and you sometimes just want things to be perfect for a special occassion. Like you say, 3 layers is your norm. So if there was going to be a change from that norm, then just sus it out and discuss it with them from the get-go. Or like hey, if you want this, it'll cost so and so for that and serve so and so. Like the entire problem would have been solved with some communication like you said. You've obviously learned from it, but I don't think it's fair to call them a 'Karen' because of it.

My first wild Karen encounter was when I was with my friends at the pool and we were getting done so we went to the girls room to change back to our normal clothes. Then I see a pair of yellow glasses sunglasses with a brown case. So I picked them up and said "who's are these?" then I hear a voice saying "Those are mine." Then she snatched them and complained about me "getting her clothes wet when I was sitting by them, not in range to get them wet. Then I just said "sorry" and she was YELLING AT ME saying "I'M NOT OVER HERE TOUCHING YOUR STUFF!!! YOUR OARENTS NEED TO TEACH YOU RESPECT. YOU NEED TO ,EARN RESPECT!!" It was as dramatic as I texted it, but she was basically yelling at me. Thinking about it now is just funny. I was a kid at the time too and was just trying to save her glasses.

My first Karen encounter was my own mother rudely complaining about a slightly overcooked steak to a server who at the time seemed to be in her early 20s while they were busy and seemingly understaffed (the only detail I don’t exactly remember, this was years ago) and she was incredibly sweet and kinda seemed to be dying inside the more my mom spoke. The first of many times I saw my dad use his parent tone to tell her to knock it off. My mom seems to be treating wait staff better now but she hasn’t gotten much better at home.

I have never seen her before that one day we were supposed to work on a project together and her friends yelled at me too because they were clique-y. Some people are so dumb. Yelling at people they don't know for like no reason instead of just saying, "Hey this school won't allow 4 volunteers anymore, so we can help you find another site to volunteer at." Instead of, "YOU'RE SO STUPID FOR (w/e the heck)"

I understand that you feel you should have notified her that the cake would be shorter for the serving size to add up but isn’t it pretty unusual not to specify the number of tiers and height of a cake you are custom ordering if you want it made a very specific way?
