I just purchased the black and red version. Your observations on the size of the nib are the same as mine. I absolutely love the weight and balance, and my sample is writing very smoothly. This pen hits well above its weight.

I’ve had my eye on this pen since it came out. When I was ready to buy, it was sold out. But I found it on sale months later, bought it and I have to say was not disappointed. Much nicer than some of the far more expensive pens I’ve purchased.

Thanks for the review. I went for it and got my Icon with the medium nib today. Definitely a good choice for an everyday pen. The enclosed converter is a plus, I was able to fill with a favourite ink and get straight to it. Two items of correspondence matched the neat style I get with a Waterman and a Faber Castell costing twice the price. Also very comfortable for an hour of copying up some archive notes into a notebook. So my impression is very close to yours, and final comment : I prefer it to my 2 Studios by a mile, including the soft grip Studio, better in both handling and the nib.

I just got one in today, red with black trim. I got the fine nib, I'd say it is comparable to the fine on the pilot metropolitan. comparing it to the Jinhao 35, it is somewhere between the fine and extra fine available on that pen, but slightly closer to the fine. I think the really nailed the design on this one. I have a Sheaffer 100 that I bought several years ago, but never used much because of the slippery grip section, so I'm glad this one is so comfortable to use. It feels a bit like a larger, heavier version of the Jinhao 51A.

I’m on the brink of buying the Sheaffer Icon, after spending the past week going back and forth over whether to go for it or not. My two main gripes are that all the reviews of the Icon confirm that the medium nib really writes like a fine instead. That is annoying and disappointing. But I’ll hopefully learn to get past that. And I wish the pen was made of a nice resin instead of this lacquered brass..I’d have preferred far more. Also, $50 would be the right price for the pen. I wish it wasn’t made in China. That said, good to get the converter with the pen. It’s a bonus. The design nod to the PFM/Legacy is the major draw for me with the Icon. It’s the main reason I think the Icon is the best looking Sheaffer in a long time. And the reason I even considered buying it. I like semi-hooded nibs. The one on my Taranis was a let-down. I’m counting on the Icon’s (apart from the aberrant line-width) to be nicer. If it’s smooth and writes reliably all the time, I can live with the fine line the nib writes. Anyway, I can’t decide which of the colors to get. I honestly like them all. The black and the red are the two front runners right now. I always like green pens. So, your green one appeals to me much as well. But I’ll definitely buy one over the weekend. I never liked the Studio, so I never bought one. That hideous looking clip alone put me off. The shiny, slick section is another turn-off. At a very similar price, the Lamy Aion is a bigger, nicer and better pen (and cheaper). I have two Aions. Love that pen. And oh, I’d take this Sheaffer Icon over the Studio every day of the week. Many thanks for the splendid review, James.

Nice review bro, thank you. This Sheaffer will probably go on my "to get" list. My first fountain pen, back in parochial school circa 1974, was one of those Shaeffer demonstrator clear body, chrome cap (student pen[?]). We bought them for $1.00, or $1.25 with a pack of cartridges. And they always wrote, and still write, and very well at that. I just bought a Sheaffer 300 in stainless steel with gold trim. What do you think if them? I think Waterman's Harmonious Green Ink would have been a really great color for this pen. I would probably go with the Lamy Studio, only because I already have 16 Sheaffers. LOL! No, really, I do! A Safe, Healthy, Happy, & Blessed New Year To All!

I'm currently using a Sheaffer's, though it's definitely of a different era(1920s😁), as my basic pocket pen. The most recent Sheaffer I've used was a truly poor quality school type from the early 1990s, which scared me away from fountain pens between then and a few years ago. The newest Sheaffer I currently have is a late 1960s Fineline. I have been interested in several of the more modern ones (especially the Legacy), but have yet to get one. Your review of the Icon just may get me to get one.

I’ve already owned a Studio and I did not like it because of the weight. So I would buy the Sheaffer. I own a Sheaffer Legacy II and two Teranis (spelling?) pens and I do see a cross between the two pens. My Teranis have very different nibs and I know that draggy feeling of the nib you are talking about. My medium nib had it but my bold nib version is smooth. If you look at the nib under magnification I bet you will see that the nib surface is not shiny. I think it is oxides that develop as a sort of corrosion on the nib. A quick polish with micro mesh or doing some figure 8’s on a brown paper bag is enough to polish the corrosion off and get it writing smooth.

Thanks for the review! Question: how does the section ‘feel’ when writing? Is it at all slippery or does it have a ‘grip-positive’ feel?
@JG3Reviews
@JG3Reviews 2 жыл бұрын
It is very similar to other pens. It reminds me of the black sections on Jinhaos 51a, 85/86, etc. (in feel, in construction it seems thicker and sturdier). It also reminds me of the feel of the grip of a Cross Century rollerball, but quite a bit thicker. Those all have a pretty good grip while appearing glossy.

It would be the Sheaffer. I have quite s few lamys and I used a simple black with chrome cap sheaffer imperial in the mid 80s which I wrote to death. So, I loved the slightly shorter yet stubbier pen. The finish is a tad fussy but I like the thought of a bit of weight. Just spent a ton on pens so, while I have my finger on the trigger, it might have to stay there for a little bit longer.

This looks quite elegant and I think I'd also choose the colour you bought. I may look out for one of these but would be more inclined if they have other nib options. My collection is also thin on Sheaffers. For your final question, I have several Studios and like their girth and heft, but the slick section bothers me a little, just enough to be a distraction or to force a firmer & more fatiguing grip. I also have the brushed steel one with the rubberised section, which I greatly prefer, but on that one the lip of the cap feels... maybe not sharp, let's go with "tactile". I notice it when posted. So this means I rarely use any of my Studios, and I should. So, that might put this Sheaffer more front and centre for me to check out.

I would not buy a fountain pen made in China when I could get one made in Japan, Germany or Italy. You’d be much better off hunting down a fully renovated Shaeffer from the 1930s when they made their pens in the USA and cared about their brand.
@bikkies
@bikkies 2 жыл бұрын
@@jamesfahey7188 My experience differs. I've had good Chinese pens and bad. I've also had good German pens and bad (Kaweco for instance). Generally I've had the best experience with Japanese and an order being delivered today includes a Custom 823 and a 3776 as an illustration of this point, as well as an M600. I've also recently received my first Sheaffer Imperial 440 Touchdown and the nib is misaligned on the feed. I use my adverse experiences to inform my subsequent purchases but I make those choices less on the basis of country of origin, more on reviews, current brand reputation and similar experiences from others. I still buy a dud now and then, but that's happening less as I've progressed. The key benefit the cheaper often-Chinese pens bring for me has been learning something about how to maintain and handle these instruments. I now have more confidence and am better able to respect and enjoy my more premium purchases, which would have taken longer or been diminished without these good and bad experiences from the commodity end of the spectrum.

I have loved your video and this pen. I have a dilemma: I use my pen every day to take notes. In one hand I hold my book and in the other my fountain pen. And that is a problem for me: uncover the cap and put it on later. I have thought of a retractable pen, but its aesthetics and especially its ergonomics do not convince me. I have a humble Sheaffer 100 that I really like how I wrote. I really like this. Please: Any trick for capped pens and solve my this problem? Greetings from Spain. (Of course, between Lamy and Sheaffer, answering your question, I like more that Sheaffer that reminds me of the classic Pen for men in its design) Greetings and congratulations for such a good video.

I just acted it through with a '50s Parker 51, and pushing the cap up with one hand works just as fine as outright putting the clip over the edge of my little notebook and pulling; voila: book in one hand, with the cap attached, and pen in the other. The latter way wouldn't work for my '60s Montblanc No. 14, and uncapping with one hand is hard, as well, because it's a bit more tight.. Depending on the thickness and sturdiness of your book and how well the clip deals with thicker material to glide over, you might have difficulties, but in general this should do the trick. Re-capping should be fine the other way around, too - though it will probably require using the thumb to secure it fully, which always is a little scary to me, both because you kinda need to switch your grip, putting the pen at risk of dropping, and because you might jam the cap on too tightly (though that's probably more of a consideration with vintage pens).

I just received my Icon (today 01.03.22), in the Chrome finish. Not one for hooded nibs, but this pen is definitely a gorgeous exception. I love nearly everything about mine, and this would include the fact that it is a fingerprint magnet. The only complaint, which is quite okay by me, is the fact that the nib is, of course, much finer than I expected. I ordered the fine, as I am a big Sailor fine fan. But this works out well. The Icon's fine is closer to an Eastern/Japanese extra fine. Great review, and love your content. I prefer the Sheaffer Icon over Lamy. I have never liked Lamy's "quirky" nib aesthetic. Thus, I do not own any. I am very pleased with my purchase. I think it is a great value for its price point. Love the heft and its balance.
