Bluesman Vintage is also worth a look if you want a vintage-styled workhorse. I bought a P-Bass from them in 2012, and it's been the best bass I've ever owned. (Never pulled the trigger on a true vintage Fender though...)

If you are putting out content, regardless of what it is, someone out there is going to take a dump on it. You make great, helpful videos, and you gotta find a way to block out the negativity and do your thing.

I just got a 20 year old MIM bass for a steal used in a well used and slightly abused condition. It actually sounds better than a very expensive custom built 60’s P Bass I had that costs 10 times the price…. I played a load of old 60’s basses and was very underwhelmed for the price, I just haven’t found the one. However I’m super happy with my bargain priced MIM P Bass. Putting DR Pure Blues on for now as I’m doing a late 70’s early 80’s rock, punk and new wave covers gig. Will probably put a set of Thomastik TI flats on.

Good advise about guitar players taking the bass. This one also applies to bass players who start on the 5-string: Make sure you muting technique is flawless, that will get you more opportunities, gigs and help you in the long run.

I just got a Nash JB-5 a little over a month ago, and I have completely fallen in love with it. It was built in 2015, and it feels and sounds incredible. It’s my first “expensive bass,” and it’s far and away my favorite instrument I’ve ever owned. Fun side note, I bought it used and it had been signed by Victor Wooten 😅

What are your thoughts regarding tube amps vs solid state amps? 2. How does your rig differ between performing live and recording/composing? 3. What pedals do you use with your rig, and how do you use them?

I also have a forever bass (94 MIM Oly White P) which I'd love to play all the time but would be crushed if anything happened to it. That reality has started me down the slippery slope of "one for this and one for that". Being a decent guitar builder helps. It's fun taking a new build to an audition and getting the gig with it. Within the week, in fact.

I own a Bluesman Vintage bass and absolutely love it. Its much like the Nash but I believe more consistently made. He will not let a bad one leave his shop. I also have a 75P that chrcks the vintage box. It sounds like it should and has been upgraded with Fralin's and a badass bridge. Its all about the gig and sound needed. Great video!

My Nash PB63 (made in 2021) is my absolute favorite bass that I own, it ticks every box for me… tone, feel, aesthetic, weight… it’s a superb instrument.

Love your channel, amigo. You have the right attitude to deal with haters (of which there will inevitably be more as your success blooms). Even Bukovac, who is the most talented dude ever and a total sweetheart, gets some serious a-holes commenting on his videos! As far as attainable "vintage spec" basses go, the closest models that I own or have played are the Moollons and Maghini Classics. Nash makes some killer stuff too, but like you said, definitely play one before you dive in. I played a handful of them at the old Mesa Hollywood (RIP), and some were absolute winners while others were just slightly lackluster. I work in film music. It's a great gig to have and it eases the pressure off playing full time. "Doing what you love" has many different faces. :)

Love the video Phillip. Some questions for you next Q&A, Is there a Bass or Amp that you would like that you don’t have? E.g. A Rickenbacker, a 5 string, an Acoustic bass amp. Your main instrument is Bass and you play Synth/keys, do you play guitar (even if its just cowboy chords), is there and instrument you want to learn that you don’t play now?

I appreciate and relate so much to your reasons for not working full-time as a musician. Thanks for your vulnerability there.

Great pointers; and yes, you need a clean tone although saturation works great for players such as Jack Bruce, Mel Schacher and Andy Fraser.

5! As a guitarist for me - everything revolves around the bassist. It’s all about tone & volume. I’m right their on your first 3. I can’t think of funk without Francis “Rocco” Prestia. The rhythm section of Prestia & David Garibaldi is a study in funk & groove. He plays upright but I would be remiss if I didn’t mention “Mistro” Ron Carter. As a guitarist I rather have “top 10”

I would love to hear more about how you handled your injury. I broke my hamate bone in my fretting hand about 5 years ago after a fall and it took quite a while to get back to a place I was comfortable with. I even had to stop wearing my wedding ring because the little bit of extra weight on that finger caused a lot of pain when I played after the injury. I never fully got everything back in terms of speed and my hand will cramp up if I play certain songs, but I have learned how to compensate for that by playing differently than I used to. Do you still have a lot of lingering issues from your injury?

I hear bass players giving advice to guitarists who play bass mention muting a lot. It surprises me, because guitar players have to mute all the time, too, especially if they play leads. I guess it must happen often or no one would talk about it. But it seems like a no-brainer for a guitarist to mute strings they're not playing. (My big problem with guitarists who play bass is that they're too busy -- and that includes me!)

I can relate to the injury thing. I deal with tendonitis in my right arm. Funnily enough, it's more from computer use than music. But yeah, it sucks to know what you're capable of and have to reel it back (or take a break from playing completely) because of an injury.

Does music school require a certain level/quality of instrument to attend?

To be totally honest, I think parts casters on the quality of Nash/Suhr are the way to go when it comes to Fender-style instruments. I've got a Tele that's of similar quality to that bass you've shown and it's still one of my go-to's.

It’s funny, when people hear Me play they just assume I do it full time…not bragging, but I’ve been playing for 50 years…I look forward to playing because I don’t have to do it as a living and take gigs I hate….I had a friend that said well playing a bad gig is still Better than doing any other job…I definitely disagree to That statement…isn’t it better to enjoy every gig because you Want to be doing it? Why settle for a bad gig just for dough…so I understand you doing another job, I have for 50 years.

Never really got why people liked buying a bass that’s purposely designed to have that “worn” look. Yeah, it looks cool, but wouldn’t you rather do that yourself instead? Just my opinion. Cool vid man, keep it up.
