One day on a group road ride my rear derailer cable broke 15min in, I told everyone to just leave me and I would Single Speed it home after tying a knot in the cable and setting the derailer in the middle of the cassette. They left and in no time I had it going, I rolled back down the hill and thought, “I going to turn around and (try to) catch them”! I did catch them and realized it was actually possible(to ride SS road). Later, I was racing XC and wanted a “not so nice” beater bike\training tool. Enter a 2015 Salsa El Mariachi... bought new for $1050 in SS mode. Feel in Love! Took a couple years to become 100% SS but now... MTB SS, Gravel bike SS, Road(Track) bike SS. I haven’t owned a shifter or cassette for a few years and let me tell you it’s wonderful. Bonus is drivetrain cost and durability. I run Surly cogs($30), steel SRAM direct mount rings($15)and a SRAM SS chain($15-18) Last forever, never fail. Imagine your drivetrain lasting years and costing $60-70!

I've been riding single speeds exclusively for almost a decade now. It's the ultimate training setup, because you have to stand up all the time. My friends all use gears, and I still leave them behind uphills.

Just converted my old hardtail a couple weeks ago. The addiction is strong. Totally agree, it makes old trails new again. Riding in showlow all weekend. Feel the burn. Running an 18 with a 34 oval. It's perfect.

Dude, you can SS anywhere. Just use the "2nd gear" (walking) if it gets too difficult. I have no problems riding SS at Henry Coe, I like hiking too. Haha

Recently converted my hardtail to a SS with a 34 oval in front and 20 in the back. Similar to 32/18. I'm hooked! Takeaways for me after a few months: 1. Improved pedal stroke, 2. Fitness increase in terms of times on segments (I mostly ride on my trainer in the garage due to having a 20 month old kiddo), 3. Power increase, 4. Technical riding has improved, 5. Fun factor and feeling like a kid riding bmx. I love your channel and hope you do more SS vids. Cheers and enjoy your weekend!

Yes!!! I’ve waiting see what you thought of single speed riding. Looks like it was a blast, I had the same reaction when I got my first single speed bike last November. Once you start trying and converting other bikes to single speed, you can really dial them in with bar length, rise and tire choice. I just put some Jumbo Jim’s on my SSPugsley and it revolutionized the ride make the bike more agile, quick, explosive from a dead stop and no self steering anymore. Can’t wait to see more single speed content and what bikes you are going to try single speed!! Great job Steve, best MTB youtuber out there!!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍🚵♂️🚵♂️🚵♂️🚵♂️

Another great video Steve! My first ride on a ss was a demo of the trek 69er and I fell in love and have been riding it since 2009. I would love for you to ride the mixed wheel size bike and hear your thought. Keep up the great content.

I have been riding single speed fat tire bike for about 8 years now. I like the simplicity of the single speed and the simple easy maintenance not to mention the excellent workout that it offers.

I love my single speed short travel hardtail. When I want to mix things up I take it out on my trails. The 26” wheels force me to carefully choose my lines. The seat post is so short that I’m standing all the time. Sometimes other riders tell me “sweet dirt jumper, dude!”.

Bar ends would help you pull as you push with your legs. Excellent leverage and engages your upper body as Cody was indicating. Awesome ride!

w00T!! single speed. you mention thinking further ahead... that's so important. momentum is our friend. also, don't climb behind someone with gears, it is more efficient to go at your own speed (usually faster). learn to use "active recovery" right after or right before a tough section i will go super slow and easy till my heart rate goes down. some people like to stop completely, but i prefer to keep the mo going. anyway, have fun steve! i can talk forever about single speeding. haha,

Sweet video! I’ve been on singlespeed for a couple years and actually always find myself wanting better hub engagement. Anything slow and technical remind me of that. You’ll probably find yourself wanting to drop a tooth on the rear soon once you get used to it. Compared to gears I find total weight (bike+rider+gear) much more noticeable as well.

I've been riding SS since about 2012 off and on... More recently I haven't ridden gears in the last year and a half ...I honestly don't miss them. I actually converted my vassago chupacabra over to gears back in 2018, and I really didn't like it...so back to SS it went. No ragrets 🤣. #SSOD

love my TI single speed Dean Colonel, light as a feather, quick as a whip, and looks absolutely beautiful with minimal service parts. I think it's right around 16 pounds with a dropper

Rode rigid SS bikes for a few years, great way to learn some very helpful techniques. Due to back pain I can no longer grind climbs so I need gears from now on.

Great vid. I was wondering how you were going to single speed on those gnarly trails out there. I’ve been dabbling in SS for a few years. I hope you’re sticking with it. Give it 4-6 weeks and you’ll be amazed at how fast you progress. I feel the SS forced me to learn technique that carriers over to when I go back to gears. Don’t tell anyone, but I ride 30-22. 🤷🏻♂️And I can pretty much ride any trail I can do with a geared bike.

My first single speed for off roading was a Brodie Unibomber. I still have one, the black matte finish. It can teach you about how to take weight off the bike using body english to make it up a slope or mound like a trials bike

SS is awesome where I live, in the Twin Cities. We have lots of twisty, flowy singletrack with minimal climbs. Lots of stuff like what you rode around 13:00.

One of these days I’ll give it a go. Out here in Colorado I like the climbs and not sure ss would make them do-able. What resolution and FPS are you recording at? I see KZfaq compression is popping up in your action sequences. I posted a vid recently and was super disappointed what the compression did to crystal clear GoPro footage in the edit. Cheers!

In New England, having a high engagement hub is kinda key given all the tech we have here. Many times you can't get a full pedal stroke and have to ratchet, almost pedal kicking, to maintain momentum through the tech.

I grew up a HUGE fan of bmx racing in 80's. I am trying to find a way to get back in shape. I re-started riding during the pandemic to stay in shape. I got a big bike bmx n a specialized fuse. i love the fuse for trails, but I found my single speed bmx challenged me more in fitness for neighborhood riding and dealing with urban conditions... hills, bad drivers, road conditions, etc. I do NOT know how to wheelie:) What are your thoughts on bare minimum and basic gear? I realized that regardless of my conditioning level...the basic single speed experience has given me more confidence in my daily riding. This also expands into learning how to service/maintenence a bike.

the best accessory for Ssp is an old Sram rear grip shifter for noisy phantom shifts. Seldom in the Right Gear, but Never in the Wrong one.

I am revisiting the building of a single-speed bike. we always need more options. the basic question is, should i focus on a true ss frame? several years ago i tried a conversation kit and it failed.

Don't plan on getting a SS, but I like standing on the pedals if I can. Get a lot more power by leveraging your body weight and can help save the legs. Only problem is back wheel slip on loose steep terrain. Have a 29 x 3 plus Stache hardtail so better grip than standard wheel widths. Would love to get a hardtail with a gearbox, Maybe you should test ride one if you can

I've ridden a few gearbox bikes. They're extremely inefficient. It feels like your tires are full of water (even on well broken-in units with thousands of miles). I love the idea of a gearbox though. I'll see if I can get one in on review.

Great question. It's too early to tell. I think a super long reach will make standing climbs tougher, but on the downs, I love that long reach. I still have a lot to learn about singlespeed.

And I will follow up my first comment with, I dare you and Cody to try fixed gear mountain biking. Problem Solvers makes cogs that bolt onto your disk side of the hub. I'm not saying it should be your only bike but it's fun and makes old trails feel new and different again.

That's what would make me try single speed. There are a few climbs on my regular ride I would have to walk with a single speed. But if it's silent on the downs, it would be worth it.

Does a clutch mech not make it silent, even with gears? I don’t notice any noise on my geared hardtail.

@@skullsroad3642 they climb SO MUCH BETTER than geared bikes, you'd be surprised what you can do on them. Prolonged 7% gets lame fast, but shallower stuff is easy, and punchy climbs are awesome since there is no drivetrain lag or slop .

You speak very highly of the knight wheels however, my wife is not impressed with the price tag. Any thoughts on Noble wheels TR45. The description is very similar to the compliance of the knights. And I can get them built with an Onyx hub, for quite a bit cheaper.

I haven't ridden the TR45 yet. Most noble wheels I've tried were overly stiff. Most wheel manufacturers claim compliance, but very few can actually deliver. I'd love to try the nobles one day, as I LOVE onyx hubs. In fact, I have Onyx hubs on all my personal wheelsets.

Nice! I'm interested in you discovering the "right" setup for single speed. Ive never myself, but i'm guessing higher bb and lower weight. Aggressive HTA Maybe not as important as riding more flowy stuff - carbon Chameleon might be about ideal. Maybe longer chainstays for traction? Middle child next?

you ride SS on the same terrain as geared bikes, so geometry still comes into play. Mine is a 64.5 HTA with a 160mm coil. No need to limit yourself just to ride SS.

You can convert your DV9 to single speed with the First Components eccentric bottom bracket. I have one setup like that in my stable.

as a long-time singlespeed rider, I switched from clipped-in to flats over a year ago. I can't say i've noticed any difference in power, but I feel way more confident on technical trails knowing that I can more easily dab a foot or leap off the bike when needed. you can single-speed any trail. Alexandera Houchin keeps crushing records on the Tour Divide with one gear!

I learned to MTB (XC) clipped in. I bought a FS with flats and changed those to clipped as well, but I tipped over a few times because I couldn't get out in time and i'd fall onto some rock or cactus. I think if I build a SS hardtail I would just use flats, but I did notice he said in this video you have to go clipped with a SS!

I don't remember saying you have to go clipless in this video. Do whatever you want. I prefer clipless when SS, but that's me. I don't usually tackle my most technical climbs on a SS, so i don't need the confidence of flats.

Lower engagement is magnified by lower gearing. Single speed doesn’t really have this problem because you don’t have any low gears.

True but SS also means you can't bail out to a lower gear, so ratcheting becomes more important to SS. We must keep moving, NOW.

I’ve played around with SS on an old 26” bike I have. It was fun to ride while helping coach the local HS mtb team. I’m in the process of building a single speed ridges fat bike. Surly Wednesday frame and ridged fork, Whiskey carbon rims, onyx hubs and schwalbe Jumbo Jim tires. It will be different from anything I have now. I’m looking forward to more SS content.

Are you running an oval up front? I recently switched to an Absolute Black 32 and I think it's really helped my knees. It definitely climbs better and had me fantasizing about going single speed. I've often fantasized about going single speed though and then the reality of a switchback climb brings me back to earth.

I use an Oval chainring on my geared bike. I took it off of my single speed. The pedal cadence is just so different that I didn't notice it helping. Plus I didn't like the variable chain tension that the oval chain ring called. Switchbacks are fun you have to look ahead and through them and try and accelerate into them.

I have a round chainring on this bike, but I may experiment with an oval. I've been developing a slight preference for the feel of round chainrings lately.

@@hardtailparty @Rhitter Interesting. I didn't notice a difference in the cadence at all between the oval and round ring--at least on geared. I found that very surprising as I expected a big difference. I didn't really feel it until my first climb. I definitely feel the cadence in the climbs but it feels more balanced. Maybe my pedal stroke was pretty bad before (riding clipless).

Hey do you think it would be ok to go from 150mm of fork travel in my hardtail to 140mm? Or would it throw off the geometry too much? I ride a medium Sonder transmitter for reference

hardtail party Do you know how much it’ll affect the head angle? It would be my first time changing travel on a bike, I’d like to make it feel a little more poppy on flatter trails and less of a all mountain smasher. Due to the fact that I only get to ride super gnarly terrain when I travel.

Biggest problem to start single speed is picking the right gears for where/what you ride. Reminds me of the late 70's n 80's riding an old bmx everywhere.

My 2nd bike is a single speed, sticky fork, bent rim, bottom tier component, salvaged bike from my parts bin.... Despite this, I ride the same trails about 1-1.5mph faster on the single speed than I do on my full suspension expensive bike.

it can be done, but it would require a tensioner of some sort. "magic gear" only works for a little while until your chain starts to wear down.

could be a decent bike for ss. I'll be experimenting with a few other bikes set up SS. As JWNolte82 said, you'll need a tensioner or an eccentric bb to set it up singlespeed. Not all bikes have sliding dropouts like the chameleon.

Commitment. I don't think I could do single speed. I picked up a brand new 2020 Rocky Mountain Growler. It's such a blast! It would be awesome if you did a review on one too. I would like to see your perspective on it.

I actually prefer to ride my full suspension in one gear on the trails. I think we did 10mi with 1900ft elevation, I didn't shift once. I'm a bigger guy, 6'3 but athletic, it must be a lot of strain on my bottom bracket because after only 8 rides is shot. If I build a hardtail it'll most likely be single speed, 27.5. I used to ride bmx as a kid, semi pro and I feel like I would be so much more agile on a hardtail.

I've thought about converting the $700 hardtail to SS after I build an XC race bike, but I don't know man... there's a lot of big hills in this town.
