My First Space Marine in 20 Years - Painting a McFarlane Warhammer Blood Angels Primaris Hellblaster

So much fun being had in this one. I haven't painted a space marine since I was a kid and I treat myself to some nostalgia with the Blood Angels. The model is a McFarlane Toys Primaris Hellblaster as an artist proof option allowing for some creativity with choosing your own design.

I trial some new techniques for me including painting non metallic metal and also using acrylic inks for an OSL plasma glow.
I mention each of the paints I use throughout the video if there's a look you are keen to mirror.
This video can be used as a guide to help you with how to paint blood angels, how to paint non metallic metal, how to paint OSL plasma glow and extra parts such as painting space marine eyes or armour chipping.

He came out great.. love the NMM on the chest and shoulder pads I've still got my 2 unpainted, and trying to work up courage to paint them!! Think you should def paint up the 2nd one to go on the shelf, but maybe do a diff Chapter (Not Ultrasmurfs tho)

I like Fulgrim and his mad lads. Thinking to buy a loyalist model plus the Chaos model. Paint them up both as Emperors Children. Same character...before and after he turned away from the Emperor's light.

I liked the OSL method you used here, but I've seen a few people do it with a florescent ink and that instantly upped the saturation and punchiness of the final pieces.

I bought myself one of these bad boys, this video an the one on Table Top Time gave me so many ideas. I love the skull on the mask. Loving the glow that comes from the gun. So many great ideas I hope I can recreate somethin this cool

More edge highlights on the nmm gold would really sell the effect. Metal corners really catch the light and need to be highlighted to look convincing

Holy smokes are you kidding me?! Man they look amazing, what an unreal custom chapter scheme. Are you looking at expanding the Kill Team into an army? Also that data sheet is so up my alley, i love that kind of stuff, amazing work.

@@flashingbadgerpainting Thanks mate! Really appreciate the kind words. The goal is to build up a few Kill Teams of the different primaris units (Reivers, Incursors etc) to have a bit of variety when playing. At the moment I'm too time poor to start anything bigger, but the goal is to make at least a full company of the Chapter that I can display on the website along with background fluff and a painting guide. Until then the website just has an image of the new Kill Team Intercession Squad based off the rules that dropped last week on there while I work on everything else in the background.

That's a cool idea! Death Guard immediately comes to mind so I can break apart some panels and maybe use a few greenstuff tentacles.

Wonderful video! You should get some lighting for the background too, either go with a simple white light, or you could go with the fun colour changing lights to give it a bit of fun! Recommendations for the new space marine, sounds like a good chance to do a large scale conversion to chaos 😉

Hey thanks so much. Yep great idea with the lighting. I was trying to keep the background dark and me lit up but it wasn't really working. I think you're right and I explore those ideas. I really want the logo as a colour changing neon light, that would be cool. Haha yeah a converted chaos marine like a plague marine I think could look really nice.

The white hot parts are between the coils. Not on the bottom part, but you can get away with that. Almost all of the plasma painting vids on here are getting it wrong. It's much harder to paint in between the ribs with white. I can see doing it with a wash and then go and dry brush over with the blue. But there is like three dry brushes with blue steadily moving up the coils. So I'd really like a video that shows them concentrating on the white in the recesses

Ah yes I get you now. Yep I was experimenting for the first time with a glowing plasm effect and agree that there weren’t many reference points. Having said that, I’ve since discovered Elminiaturista on Instagram and his lighting and glowing effects are incredible. So check him out 👍

@@flashingbadgerpainting I'm new. Started last May. I'm trying to do a hell blaster squad because in the new dark angels index it has a combat patrol that has five hell blasters in it. That would complete my combat control! Luckily I found a captain that's the same right in my local game store bit box! Anyway not to get off topic. I've tried to paint plasma so many times and I'm always disappointed with it. I just got a brand new tiny dry brush. I also have the contrast paint. Winter frost? By game works. A semi-transparent paint I thought might be of use in doing the overglow right outside the coils on the main gun. I'll have to experiment. But yeah I have yet to been satisfied with any sort of effort. I've made doing plasma weapons. Unfortunately. I have five hell blaster guns to paint so maybe I'll hit on it this time. I won't cross my fingers

As a newer painter already tackling glowing plasma without an airbrush you are doing awesome. Since making this video I’ve experimented a few different ways. If you have a look at my Blood Angels Apothecary video or my Tau Riptide you’ll see a few different ways I’ve gone about it that you might like. Mainly with using semi transparent acrylic inks. I’ll be keen to see how you go with your marines. You’re welcome to join our discord and show off your work and ask the team for more advice, there’s some incredible painters in there

Excited to hear that you are about to start your first model! I primed this model with chaos black primer from games workshop. They are pricey but I really like their primers compared to other brands. I use black when I’m after a darker looking model, white when my base coats will be bright like with yellows or oranges and I use Wraithbone when I want to use contrast or speed paints as my next layer. Hope that helps 😀

The primer and the painting with the airbrush are good without disassembling the figure? I ask because I have seen disassembly videos of these figures and there are parts that seem to break before removing them

i came across the youtube short of this and ended up watching the full video and am really tempted to try it. Would it be easier to start with minis or a full size model like this? While i have never really painted figures before, i've always wanted to get into it but the paint costs and any fumes etc worry me. Any advice?

Hey! Mini painting is relaxing and heaps of fun but you’re right, it can be intimidating and expensive to jump in to. I recommend starting with the smaller 28mm scale models and using brush and paint rather than an airbrush to help keep costs down to start with. These are water based paints so no concern about fumes. Companies like “The Army Painter” are great for beginners as they have brush and paint sets and paints like Speed Paints are a good place to start. Watching KZfaq videos is how I learnt to paint and there’s plenty out there, even some here that I hope will help!

Hey thanks for asking. Just in 3 pieces. Him, the backpack and the weapon. When I primed, I would move the limbs etc around a little and prime again in those gaps.

True! Black 2.0 is proper dark. I'll keep it in mind as i plan on painting the second marine model I have as well.

Do you varnish your works, or do you just leave it at the paint layer level?

If I’m expecting to leave them on a shelf most the time I don’t varnish them however if they are models that I expect I will play with a lot and not very carefully, like a squad of Ork boys or cultists that are on and off the board a lot and likely getting bumped around, then I will varnish them. I try to avoid varnish in a can though because the results can be unexpected. Airbrush mixed with some thinner or even painted on is great. Hope that helps!

Reshade? Do you mean going back in and creating darker areas? I went from dark to light on this model but other times yep, I will start with the midtone, then shade dark, then complete with highlights.
