Same here. It makes me laugh when people call them “generic” when they were literally the first ones. Like when people hear Hendrix and say things like Kirk Hammett or some metal dude is better. The Beatles were the blueprint for modern pop and rock.

It's like the guy who routinely puts new wheels on his car and has no appreciation for the guy who actually INVENTED the wheel!

I have often had same argument with my brother. He thinks The Rolling Stones were/are better. he doesn't understand the Stones wouldn't have done what they had, if the Beatles didn't do what they did.

The separate bits of the so-called "medley" were played separately, then edited together. It was not played straight through.

@@jnagarya519 Incorrect. Almost all of the backing tracks were played live as a medley. There were a couple of edits but the concept of the medley was planned, rehearsed and recorded as a complete take.

Yes, and making a quiet space between the last song on side 1 and the first song on side 2 was really part of the experience. Completely lost subsequently on cd etc. Carelessness and Digital are doing a lot of damage to our cultural heritage.

Actually, John Lennon deliberately cut the end of the tape to get the reaction that everyone has when they hear it. Remember this album came out when 8 track cassette players were the standard car and home tape player. And they were notorious for eating your tapes!

There are lots of so called "greatest love song" , it is foolish to name one. Something is a great song but not even the best love song by the Beatles.

I'm sure you and other young people can be very appreciative of their artistry. But it wasn't just their music. Yes, they changed/grew their music throughout the decade, leading the artform through a maturing of the rock genre. Each new album seemed to inspire other artists to follow their lead. But for us Boomer fans, they influenced us in cultural change - hair, clothing, politics, etc. And we didn't tire of them - we anticipated each new album for their next innovation.

Imagine their every LP being #1 on BOTH the AM radio LP and Singles charts, because every track of every LP was played on the radio, to which listeners responded with requests. Imagine walking through a neighborhood in Summer, 1967 and hearing "Sgt. Pepper's" coming out of EVERY window. Imagine the major FM radio station, WBCN, playing the entire "The Beatles" (all four sides) without commercials or other interruptions except to announce the next of the four sides to be played. And doing that every weekday night for two weeks before the LP was released. And then on those weekends playing all the tracks from that LP randomly, mixed with earlier "Beatles" tracks. And "The Beatles" never peaked: they kept evolving, and growing, and getting LARGER -- which is BIGGER than HUGE -- until they broke up.

Basically, you had to BE there to truly appreciate how massively The Beatles impacted and influenced an entire generation of people who were prepared to reach out to great art and allow it to expand their appreciation of life's possibilities. I don't think even the Beatles liked hearing their own music on modern day stereo speakers I think George Harrison sed something in a interview like their music is is meant to be listened to in mono sound playing out of a lofi sounding record player depending on how you listen to their music can make all the difference

Yes. George Martin remarked how amazed he was that the Beatles never repeated themselves. I mean, 13 albums in 7 1/2 years? No one will ever do that again with the quality the Beatles maintained.

John was not a fan of "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" and I agree, it comes close to sounding like a tune for children.

@@treetopjones737 And yet, while they were making this album, Paul was bringing in songs such as "Maybe I'm Amazed" and "Come And Get It" while George offered up classics like "All Things Must Pass" and "Isn't A Pity", none of which John was interested in working on. John can moan all he likes about having to work on "granny songs" such as "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" but what was he bringing to the party instead? During the Get Back sessions, Paul was offering classics such as "Let It Be", "The Long And Winding Road", "Get Back" and George was throwing in the likes of "For You Blue", "Isn't It A Pity" and "I, Me Mine". John was producing next to nothing apart from "Don't Let Me Down" (which was going nowhere after days of John's farting about. Then Paul took command of it and made it a classic. Meanwhile John eventually coughed up the vacuous filler track called "Dig A Pony". John was just jealous and lazy. Paul was ambitious and hard-working and John couldn't or wouldn't rise to the challenge of matching him (unlike in the early years when John wrote most of the A-sides of the hit singles.) "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" isn't the greatest moment in the history of The Beatles but it's a million times better than the "Two Virgins" or "Life With The Lions" utter shite which John was putting out as "art" at that time.

Other than "Yellow Submarine" the other two weren't. The Beatles could be light hearted and also loved to have fun with some of their songs. That was the beauty of The Beatles, there was always something for EVERYONE.

I bought all the albums as they came out in 1987, and I can tell you, the later remasters sounded clearer. Early CD's just don't sound as good as newer CD's. Now the remixed versions I would stay away from. There are slight differences from the original versions, but they all sound great. I've bought them all, from original albums on vinyl to the MOBILE FIDELITY Original Master Recordings vinyl from 1983, to all versions of CD's. Enjoy.

Oddly enough, Sinatra referred to Something as his favorite Lennon and McCartney song.

@@lurx2024 He assumed it was a Lennon-McCartney song because it was a Beatles song. Later on in his career, after he'd been better advised, he introduced the song in his live shows as a song by "George Harrison of The Beatles." Oddly enough, Frank and George became personal friends and George stayed at Sinatra's house as a very welcome guest on a number of occasions.

You might appreciate the newer remixes (youtube!) if you're listening on headphones. As has already been said the originals were mixed for lo-fi record players and radio. The average person did not have headphones in the 60's. Hell, listen to all the Beatles songs in every way possible! Life is long.✌

@@dulcetghost I think you will eventually like/love their music or at least appreciate how diverse their music is. It doesn't hurt to broaden your horizons in music even more. Just think of how you will have more to choose from depending on your mood.

I do as well. Every generation should discover the Beatles. I'm not sure younger generations can begin to appreciate how the Beatles turned the world upside down. If you didn't live through it, if you weren't a teenager in 1964...the magnitude of the times will escape you.

However there are SO MANY videos, films, documentaries and their concerts that were filmed where they can at least get a SENSE of what we teenagers felt in 1964 which the press called "BEATLEMANIA" Lots of films of fans reactions wherever the Beatles went. NOTHING has equaled the enormity of fan reaction to The Beatles, before or since. Truly!!

@@dulcetghost If you have, (I am writing this on Jan. 22, 2024, I hope you started with their first album "PLEASE PLEASE ME" and worked your way chronologically as they were released from 1963- 1970. It is the ONLY way you can appreciate how there music in each single and album evolved and progressed in just 7 1/2 years. WE couldn't WAIT for their next single and album come out to see what they were going to do next. It was exciting and they NEVER got BORING, they were so versatile and did all sorts of music.

I agree. Whether or not it's the best album ever can be debated but it's indubitable MY favourite and listening to it invariably uplifts my spirits.

I can see that for sure. There must have been some kind of divine intervention that made The Beatles come into being. I really wish I could have grown up during that time!

You seem like you might like one of my favorite bands called *"The Jesus and Mary Chain"* If you don't know them, and you choose to look into them I would start with "Darklands" (which is their 2nd album). Their first album (Psychocandy) was regarded as very groundbreaking and important but it is a bit intense and takes a little getting used to...One critic said it "was as close to noise as music can get and still be music"

@@treetopjones737 Not before they were teenagers, Paul met John first when Paul was 15 and John was almost 17. Paul was already friends with George and shortly after, introduced George to John. John was skeptical at first, to let George in the band because he was so young ( a year younger that Paul) until George played an instrumental rock song called "RAUNCHY" all the way through. Paul got into the band when Paul played "20 Flight Rock" for John. John was impressed because Paul knew ALL the words to it, AND he knew how to tune a guitar properly.

To be fair. 'Tommy' beat them on the connected theme by about 4 months.

The Beatles influenced basically everything after them.

Sounding like Pink Floyd.... yeah...like Pink Floyd sounded 4 years later... and that's the problem with young people commenting on the Beatles. It's never in the context of what was around at the time. There were always bands doing things more extreme than the Beatles, yet they were always on the forefront. Everyone wanted to know what they would do next.

@@johnstegmeier3758 If Pink Floyd was influenced, cool. But their biggest albums sound nothing like The Beatles. Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall are very unique. Pink Floyd may be the best musical group there was. The Beatles had the best songs, The Who had the best and loudest concerts. I suppose The Rolling Songs had the best longevity.

Also, as is true with most music as voluminous as the Beatles catalog, there is an acclimation period. Certain songs have to sink in, sometimes after repeated listens. I've found many times that songs that didn't grab me the first few listens ended up being favorites. Also, ponder this one. The time span between recording their first album and their last was about 6 1/2 years. THAT is unfathomable and will never happen again. Explosive!

@@patticrichton1135 well, technically speaking, sept of '62 to August/September of '69 would be pretty close to 7 years. I was going from the recording of PPM in Feb '63. I don't believe all 4 were together in the studio beyond Abbey Road but did show in smaller numbers to work out some kinks in Let it Be.

Some many of these reviewers don’t listen to side 2 as a medley which is essential.!

@@dulcetghost Fan Fact: the title of last song, Her Majesty, didn't appear on the back cover of the first edition as a track, so the song The End was actually the last one that you could read of the album. I think it'd be fun to give a try to the earlier Beatles album like A Hard Day's Night, Help or Rubber Soul... Even if probably the White Album is more for your taste!

@@B.R.0101 she should start with their first album "Please Please Me" and work her way chronologically as they were released and as WE heard them, those of us who were there . THAT will be the ONLY way she can see how their music evolved and progressed in such a short amount of time. It's silly to skip around their catalogue out of order, or to totally skip entire albums. To me it's like reading a novel by starting in the middle, or at the end of the book. Missing the plot development which starts at the beginning.

@Richard-sc7yq Also, the line "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window" refers to one of the fans that hung around out side the gate of Paul's home on Cavendish Ave, not far from Abbey Road. While they were out, she saw a ladder leaning against his home and noticed that a window on the second floor was slightly open. It was the bathroom window, which the fan climbed through. She stole some photos and later, when she heard that Paul was pleading to the other girls that frequently hung out there, that these were very special photos and if they knew who took them, could they please return them to him, which that girl eventually did. That was the inspiration for that line. lol

It is entirely possible to like, if not "love" opposite things. Last but not least, the Beatles deliver many different genres, for which they have become favorites of critics. It's absolutely mesmerizing to hear e.g. "Within you, without you", "Rocky Raccoon", "Helter skelter", "And I love her" back to back. Or jazz, folk, rap, hard rock, country, van Beethoven, pop etc, back to back. Happens non-stop in my music library.
