The woman in the audience staring at her is Cass Elliot (Mama Cass) from The Mamas & The Papas.

This is a legendary breakout performance. Clive Davis (the president of Columbia Records) was there, and called this performance "absolutely riveting and hypnotic and compelling and soul stirring in such a way that she was representative of an epiphany that changed the rest of my life." The sound was radical; back then women did not sound like this. In groups like the Jefferson Airplane, or the Mamas and the Papas (both of whom sang at this festival), girl singers cultivated a "pretty" sound. Crazy thing is, she sang this song twice at the festival, on Saturday and on Sunday, and due to a contract issue, the Saturday rendition was not filmed. This video is from Sunday, and people who were there claimed that it was the lesser of the two. Judge for yourself: the audio-only recording of the Saturday version is available at kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j5tgZ7yErba3pX0.html. The audience was shattered. Thing is, she often did that -- in many other performances of "Ball and Chain", she would flatten them to the point where they did not believe what they just witnessed. There would be a brief, stunned silence after she finished, while folks digested what they just heard. Then they would rush the stage. Rave reviews would appear the next day, like this one from a critic that was an opera buff: "Miss Joplin, in her early 20s, has been for the last year or two the vocalist with Big Brother and the Holding Company, a rock quintet of superior electric expertise. Shortly she will be merely Janis Joplin, a vocalist singing folk rock on her first album as a single. Whatever she does and whatever she sings she'll do it well because her vocal talents are boundless. This is the way she came across in a huge, high-ceilinged roller skating rink without any acoustics but, thankfully a good enough sound system behind her. In a proper room, I would imagine there would be no adjectives to describe her."

I told you it would leave you with your jaw on the floor! When she asked Big Mama Thornton for permission to sing the song, Big Mama told her, "Go ahead. Just don't f### it up." .......She didn't. Janis never put out a bad song. Not once. Some other songs of hers that are favorites of mine are "Cry Baby", "Summertime ", and "Work Me Lord", all live versions, though she has many more amazing songs. In 3 short years, she became a legend. Gone much too soon, and much too young.
