This was the peak of his 'metal' voice. He sings really well in the 90s, but obviously their music was less abrasive in that period, and so was his voice.

I think all of James' "voices" fit their era. Kill through Puppets fit the young hungry style of those albums. Justice feels even heavier with the angrier vocals after Cliff's dead. Black album voice is like Justice but more groovy than heavy. And so on.. I only didn't like his voice much on St. Anger, and I feel like his voice on Death Magnetic coulda been better. It was done better on Hardwired.

I actually think this is James’ worst album vocally, it’s where he kinda started trying but wasn’t fully there, kinda like kill/master vocals but lower and trying to be better but not really knowing how, black album vocals and Seattle 1989 are the best ever vocal performances from James, if this album had come out a year later it would be amazing

This album represents their best work, IMO...it combines their musical talent with the pain, anger, and frustration they all felt after Cliff died (you can hear the emotion in the vocals). 50 years from now, this album will be just as kick@$$ as it was 33 years ago and still is today.

@@brandonmiller3978 Well kinda, nowadays we have social media which gives the mob power. Also, the type of tyranny has changed, back then it was the religious/traditionalist (cultural right) stream of thought, nowadays is the other side, the leftist/progressive stream of thought. honestly, I think one of the main reasons for the bullshit is actually twitter, I know it may seem small but it's scary how much effect it has on the media, universities and academia (my point is that some people who would normally not get to give an opinion on things they don't understand now do it all the time and it has an effect)... And how that finally enters laws, what people used to say was that all this is fringe and will never affect our lives but it was clear it was going to, it was a stream of thought that made people who were otherwise miserable to feel good about themselves, instead of fixing their own lives. This is coming from someone who has lived in both a religious tyranny and this type (I'm from Iran, I moved to the UK a few years ago, I'm 21). Honestly, I kinda feel less free here with regards to speech and expression, there are some things here that you just cannot question, a lot in fact, it's very odd that this is happening and people don't pay attention.

One thing to keep in mind, Alex, "you can do it your own way" is followed by "if it's done just how I say", which in my opinion brings a more sinister Big-Brother meaning to the song. This is part of why this is one of my favorite songs on this album!

This might be my favorite song on the album and definitely top 5 in the Metallica cannon. After this past year , this song has more relevance that at any time since the album was released ....”Freedom no longer frees you!”....your told your free but your really not. “ do you see what I see, truth is an offense , your silenced for your confidence” if you have dissenting logical opinion that deviates from the main stream narrative then it gets censored....great lyrics , great musicianship (the transitions on this song are insane!) and a truthful message to everyday Americans. Penetrate the smokescreen, think for yourself and See through the selfish lie!

As a rhythm guitarist, this is easily my favorite metal album of all time. Eye of the Beholder has always been at the top of my list. I've given quite a few guitar lessons over the past 30 years, and this is one of the main songs I lean on for teaching rhythm techniques, and simply how to play like Metallica. It's one of those, "once you learn this, you can learn almost anything" songs. I've watched your entire journey into metal, Alex. Loved every minute of it, especially your deep dive into Metallica. And yes, as others have hinted... brace yourself for Dyer's Eve and have the lyrics handy. It's an adrenaline rush, and moves fairly fast. Some of the deepest lyrics on the album, and one that far too many teens related to when it was released.

Its sad that AJFA has received more attention due to its mix (as they buried the bass guitar) than to the lyrical content of its songs. It IS a masterpiece, written by 25 year old James Hetfield.

Only issue I see is the bass, others complain it sounds "tinny" or something. But that guitar tone is one of my favorites EVER, and the lyrics and riffs are some of the best and most important from Metallica IMO. MoP and AJFA are definitely tied for my favorite Metallica album.

This is the height of James Hetfield's vocals. There was something so Angry and Heavy about his voice on this Album. And Eye of the Beholder displays that more than any other song on the Album. His voice had this conviction and authority and weight and depth. The layering just made it feel like God sent him from the heavens and he stepped down from a cloud and started booming that voice out into the world, the woe that is coming and waiting for us.

Het’s voice is definitely at it’s thrashiest on this record and it just flows with aggression and true grittiness. But I still think his reach is at it’s best on the Black album, with the Unforgiven and Nothing Else Matters as the most effective examples.

This is the direction they were headed musically while Cliff was still alive, you can hear the gradual change through the first 4 albums. This is their most Prog Metal album and it's such a shame that Cliff passed, because this is such intelligent musicality. Can't wait for you to hear Shortest Straw. That's my favorite song from their entire catalogue

Partly thats true, but the bass on this was turned to zero, so we do not hear it. With cliff, you would definitly heard that more. And i think the best way to hear the album was on my old car stereo system i built, that had a 12" kenwood sub in a ported box, 2 6x9" sony's, plus a set of decent mid to tweet range up front. This album played through that had stunning bass, and i still havnt figured out why i cannot reproduce that 1st systems sound even with my last attempt which involved 15 bose speakers and 2x12" infinity subs.

@@christianbuczko1481 Not sure I catch your meaning there. They lowered the bass, but it's not zero. I can 100% hear the bass in it. It can be difficult to hear on a lot of the album however because it also follows the exact same progression as the guitar. However, if you have even half decent speakers, you can hear it and also feel your bones rattle in your chest, a good indication the bass is most definitely there.

@@Grigeral its hard to hear though, and was dialled down alot. To get it upto a decent level requires huge subs to rebalance the sound to a reasonable level. If it was balanced well on the track, that would not be needed as much.

Audio engineer Flemming Rasmussen did a phenomenal job on Metallica's first albums. I just wish they didn't undermix the bass because, while Justice is their best album overall, the sound is too meager for its own good.

My introduction to Metallica!!!! Jr. High. I wish i was one of the "cool kids" that got into Puppets 2 years earlier. But within a week of hearing Justice, i had all 4 albums and shitty copy of garage days on cassette that probably was dubbed 4 or 5 times already. Good times!

Until it sleeps sucks!! Metallica lost their Speed Metal Edge at that point. Metallica of the 90's was ok but for people who didn't listen to Metallica from the beginning...they wouldn't know any better.

I can remember waiting in line outside the local music store to buy this album when it came out. Some complain about the production and lack of bass but this is an amazing album. Their best album lyrically. Still so relevant today.

I have been listening to Metallica since I was probably 8 years old, it’s nice to see Alex experience it for the first time, I was blown away the first time hearing those albums. He seems to absolutely get totally what they were about in those eras. I love these reactions to old school Metallica.

Sincerely, this is their best album for me, it has great riffs, solos, also Lars perfomance is his best, no words about the lyrics and the intensity of each song that makes you smash something and also makes you cry.

I’m loving this Metallica kick you’ve been on. Freaking fun as hell. I can’t wait until you get to “Garage Days.” If you don’t know it was an EP released back in 87’ (i think) with some banging covers. They released garage inc in 98’ with another full album of covers in addition to the original album.

I agree with several comments on here. Best advice is after you finish this album, go back and review Kill Em’ All and Ride the Lightning before progressing to the Black Album and beyond. It is so incredibly necessary to completely review the earliest work first. You will understand after doing so. Great reaction!!!

Jamez's spitting anger and delivery of the lyrics on this entire album spoke to us Gen X'ers nearing the end of the 80's. It's also why some of us were so disappointed in the band in a few years. But .. none of that, this album is a masterpiece.

remember when I found my dad's old cassettes. I was in primary school, listening some shitty radio music at that time. I tried Metallica, the name was intriguing and AJFA's cover looked interesting. Love to see your excitement on these Metallica reactions. I actually never really gave the lyrics to this song that much analysis back in the day, but man it hit's home today. I think you focused on the wrong line though. It's the next line that is the key. "You can do it your own way, If it's done just how I say" It hearkens back to the days of Henry Ford. He said you could have a Model T in any color you want, as long as it is black. You can do it your own way, as long as it's the way the Facebook, Twitter, KZfaq, Instagram, and Hollywood want you to.

And Justice was my intro to Metallica soon after it came out. Then I watched Cliff 'em All. Cliff Burton made me into a musician. Got a bass the very next Xmas. Now a world music percussionist for over 20 years. Thank you Cliff. Oh yeah... great song & review ;)
