I went to a concert with A Perfect Circle, Puscifer and Primus just a few months ago. It was a celebration of Maynards 60th birthday. Each band played 3 songs and then the next band would come on and play 3 songs. With three intermissions and all the bands on stage for the final 3 songs. It was so special and Primus stole the show for me.

@@joshuaguerra2651 it was somewhat the inverse for me. I've been a Primus fan for almost 35 years, and have enjoyed Tool since they hit the scene, but I was not familiar with Puscifer or APC. Lots of new fans were made on that tour. And after all the concerts I have been to in the last couple of years that were exclusively made up of the Geritol generation, it was nice to see a wide spectrum of ages and interests represented.

Les Claypool's bass playing is so insane. And not only is he also doing vocals at the same time, but if you watch a live performance, he always looks like he's putting all his attention into dancing around the stage while the bass playing is just effortless for him.

Primus was an odd band in which Les Claypool's bass was the primary instrument... The trio were huge fans of Rush (the opening track of 'Frizzle Fry' started w/ the opening notes of Rush's 'YYZ' before cutting off) In 2004, Primus released a live DVD 'Hallucino-Genetics -live 2004'...which was a concert video of Primus performing the entire 'Frizzle Fry' album live, featuring the classic Primus line-up: Les Claypool (bass/ vocals), Larry LaLonde (guitar) and Tim 'Herb' Alexander (drums) Originally formed in the 80's in California, Primus were an odd trio that didn't fit in between the glam rock bands (Motley Crue, Ratt...) and thrash metal bands (Metallica, Exodus...) and every time they played a gig, the audience would become irate and start chanting, "Primus sucks!" ... and that became the band's motto 😂 By 1988, the original trio of Les Claypool (bass/ vocals), Todd Huth (guitar) and Jay Lane (drums) recorded the demo 'Sausage' and had written most of the songs on 'Frizzle Fry' that they performed live... but the response was abysmal... Both Huth and Lane quit Primus and were replaced by former Possessed guitarist Larry LaLonde and drummer Tim 'Herb' Alexander by 1989... They decided to record a show that year and released a live album independently as Primus' debut album 'Suck on this' in 1989. It sold enough to raise money & record 'Frizzle Fry' in the studio w/ co-producer Matt Winegar. It was released in 1990 on the indie label Caroline Records. Primus wrote weird and wacky lyrics that drew on heavy sarcasm and dark humor... 'Too many puppies' for example, was a song against gun violence in America ('Puppies' referred to young kids) ... 'John the fisherman' was one of the characters u would find in the deep country in America... Same w/ 'Mr. Knowitall'... Les Claypool drew a lot of inspiration from characters referred to as 'white trash' in America 😂 (One of his later songs 'My name is Mud' is a perfect example) 'Frizzle Fry' sold well against all odds and Primus was signed to Interscope Records in 1991 and released their 2nd studio album 'Sailing the Seas of Cheese' which got MTV airplay and went gold (half a million copies sold) in the US.

Guitarist Larry LaLonde was in the band Possessed, who had major influence on what would become know as Death Metal, though they were at the time part of the Bay Area Trash scene which gave us Metallica and Exodus amoung others. Larry was a student of guitar wizard Joe Satriani, who also taught Steve Vai, Kirk Hammett and Alex Skolnick, from Testament. Larry met bassist/vocalist Les Claypool when they were both in another Bay Area band called Blind Illusion for the Sane Asylum record. That band was Thrash, but with some Prog Rock elements. There is live footage on here somewhere of a Blind Illusion show in Philadelphia that I was at. It's good footage and was a great show. Anyway, Larry and Les hit it off and this was the result. Not like anything else for sure. Great record. I saw Primus three or four times back in the day and it was always a good time. "Primus Sucks!" That's an running joke for Primus fans.

@@tetfol3315 Absolutely. LaLonde and Claypool were well known in the Bay Area and were able to get a great drummer. They probably had their choice of several. LaLonde's playing was so different than it had been in Possessed, but every once in awhile his roots shows through. When it's time to bring a little bit of heavy, well, he knows how to do that with the best of them.

Korn, Deftones, Incubus, Muse, Mastodon and even The Dillinger Escape Plan, have considered Primus an influence on their sound. For a bunch of oddities they have had a huge influence on many of the alt metal bands we today. Some people jokingly call the band "Tool for hillbillies" due to the out there nature almost otherworldly sound of the music similar to what Tool might do but a bit more wackiness and humor. Speaking of which, they are very close friends of Maynard James Keenan and were featured alongside with him in his Sessanta tour where he celebrated his 60th birthday alongside Keenan's bands A Perfect Circle and Puscifer, similar when he turned 50th (the Cinquetta tour in 2014) invited another group of friends of his, Failure (another band I hope you tackle in the future too. They are also super influential in the sound of many bands today).

I also thought the bass was a guitar upon first listen on certain tracks. Nearly 20 years later and Les is my fav. bass player and I am a big fan of distortion on bass. Good stuff, Molly!

The song spaghetti western is about a genre of film that is Italian western films which were later dubbed over in English. When they did the audio editing on those movies they often added tons of reverb to the foley work so when the cowboys walked in their boots there was often tons of reverb.

You should give Clutch a listen sometime. They are a heavy and quirky band from the 90s that had modest success and toured with a bunch of bands you've already heard. Clutch (1995) is my personal favorite album, but they've got a bunch and are still putting out music now. The Elephant Riders (1998) and Blast Tyrant (2004) are also awesome.

I could write a chapter in my life around this album. I had it on tape in 6th grade. I had played it so much and talked to everybody about them that would listen. All the words were worn off the cassette. Eventually, I split the cassette in half and put the tape into another cassette housing and continued to play it after it had been eaten and taped back together a number of times. It’s a treasure from my childhood. Eventually, I met Les Claypool a couple of times and Tim Alexander, and Brain too. I seen them seven times but all of those times were before 2003.

WOO! oh the fun begins. Got Sailing the seas of cheese ( you'll likely know 1 song off that) then Pork soda, Tales from the punch bowl, The Brown album, Antipop. the rest of their albums vary. ALSO, Primus did the South Park theme, cameo on the episode Chef Aid. Les did the theme for Robot Chicken and the band is in Bill and Ted's Bogus journey.

What's awesome is Primus unique instrument lineup, with Claypool's bass taking a lead position with a rhythm guitar as backup (and every band member is incredible to boot) I'm aching for you to give Queens of the Stone Age a go, Songs for the Deaf is one of the loudest albums ever put to print~

My absolute favorite Primus record. Heavy, groovy, funky, dark at times, a truly unique record. Three absolute consummate top tier musicians. As a side note, and I"m sure someone else has said this...Larry Lalonde and Les Claypool played in a thrash band called Blind Illusion prior to Primus. David Silvera--former drummer of Korn- was HUGELY influenced by Tim Herb Alexander.

I sure hope you listen to more Primus! When I think of 90's psychedelia, I think of the sound this band conjures into existence. Primus can be ominous, they can get a little bit old timey, a lot of bit funky, and there's always excellent musicianship from every angle.

Thank you for reviewing one of my favorite albums. You have to watch les claypool play. He has a lot of haters because hes so unique in his playing style. Most of them cant copy it so they dont get it. Earliest work is the best but they have a few gems on newer stuff as well. My only question is where is your ring sweet girl some lucky guy or girl must have asked by now lol.

Les Claypool sometimes plays a stand up bass with a bow for that cello-like sound. You can see him playing it in the video for the song ‘Mr Krinkle’ from the album Pork Soda. It’s one of the craziest videos you’ll ever see, but that’s true of pretty much all their videos.

Before joining Primus, guitarist Larry LaLonde played in a band called Possessed - often considered to be the first death metal band - and in his younger years, he took lessons from legendary guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani - the same guy Kirk Hammett of Metallica took lessons from.

Hey Molly, i have been watching your channel for a while now, and i love your content. I myself have been starting to uploade videos to my yt channel, and i decided to start making music/album reviews and reactions, but i wonder how you make your albuk reactions without getting copyrighted. And if you do get copyrighted, then how has your channel not gotten any strikes? Since i assume that after many copyright claims, you could get a strike. I was just wondering, hopefully, you answer.

Yay Primus! They were the only band to have their own section on itunes and are largely undefinable due to them being such a great combo of jazz/metal/funk/rock elements but not really being in just one. Please do a couple more albums to hear while they dont sound similar they all sound like Primus. Also recommend two of Les' other projects Flying Frog Brigade and Oysterhead. Hello again after watching the whole video. Info dump incoming. So as far as the band goes Les Claypool (bass and vocals), Larry "Ler" LaLonde, and Tim "Herb" Alexander. The bass is very much the lead instrument while Larry usually plays some atmospheric, soloish stuff as backup on guitar is very different than what you'll hear most bands play. Les has described Tim's Drum playing as "If a gorilla took a jaunty stroll on a drumset." Somehow it all works beautifully. Primus' music was a breath of fresh air when I first heard them in the early 90's because as you said they are very unique. The songs tend to be about quirky people or experiences the band has had over the years. Too Many Puppies was about the Gulf war and American military in general training young kids, or "puppies" to go to war so your description was spot on. Hello Skinny/Constantinople are covers of songs by the Residents. A VERY weird band for VERY weird people but I love them as well. Primus is my favorite band of all time so I implore you to continue to at least Sailing the Seas of Cheese and Pork Soda, the golden 3 of the band so to speak. They change drummers later with Bryan "Brain" Mantia and recorded Brown Album and Antipop. Bryan's drum playing is also very unique and different from Tim's but also fir the band wonderfully. Les also did the theme songs for South Park and Robot Chicken tv shows.
