Type O fans are really grateful that you made this video reaction of one of the best and unique bands every in the goth/doom metal genre. He especially inspired many bass singers like me to use our deep voices as an advantage for this spooky genre. Rest in Peace Peter Steele, we will all miss you and will remember forever.

Type O Negative were a special band. So much humor and intelligence. Almost every album had a cover where they made the song totally their own. 'Cinnamon Girl' was the cover on this one. This album initially took some time to grow on me with doom taking more of a backseat rather than being the driving force like in the albums before this one. I wasn't ready for something more mature but the album grew on me.

A lot of that distorted heavy sound is Peter Steele, the vocalist, also the bassist. He distorted and used Chorus on his bass, tuned to B, and basically played the rhythm guitar on it. Incredible stuff.

I've always considered Type O to be The Beatles of goth rock, and there's a reason why they had the nickname of "the drab four". My favorite band of all time, no other has consistently moved me so much as them. Peters vocals are incredible, there is a lot of personal pain he expresses in so many of his songs like Red Water which is about so many deaths in his family and how Christmas is painful for him because of the losses he's experienced (the band never played that song after it was recorded because it brought up too many painful memories for Pete). Good goth I could go on for days about this band I love them so much, and this album in particular has so many memories for my own life when I was dealing with surviving cancer (20 years ago on the 10th of this October!) and the winter during my months of recovery afterward. I was 19 and this album carried me through so much, hard to put into words everything which was going on at the time but the music fully represents it all for me. Thanks for covering it, I really enjoyed your perspective of each track✌️
@mollyesanborn
@mollyesanborn Жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing, I do agree about his vocals. He has a way of channeling a lot of power and emotion with his voice while keeping the delivery very touching. A lot of other bands I've been reacting to are a lot more forceful and aggressive, and there's a tenderness to his voice that really makes Type O Negative stand out. Definitely a band I want to hear more from!
@cloudbloom

@@mollyesanborn nailed it with your take on the vocals! I also appreciate how you pointed out the other elements of the band like Kenny Hickey's guitar tones and techniques he's amazing, as well as the keyboardist Josh Silver and his atmospheric additions to every song they are such a unique band. Looking forward to more reactions of their work, I stayed up a bit later than I was planning on just to finish this vid so I'm gonna snooze but thanks again for checking out this album it's even better on multiple listens when you dig into the lyrics and how they relate to Peter at the time of writing (btw Pete also plays the bass in every song and that bass tone is cool as hell in its own way, you can hear it well in Be My Druidess when the intro riff sounds like its from a bass guitar but that's actually Kenny, and the bass comes in after the 16 bar measure which makes it sound so full it's awesome). I love Type O, certainly in concept, by far and away their best record is Bloody Kisses. It's just 70 odd minutes of perfection, gorgeous hooks, chunky killer riffs, I'd say the gothy elements are better integrated as a part of the song. The first album is also great, more of a continuation of his previous hard-core project. But yeah, please please give Bloody Kisses a listen. Never been outright surpassed. Lots of sex noises in the transition tracks though, don't know if they're on the streaming platforms but probably just something to bear in mind.

"The Table's been set for but Seven, Just last year I dined with Eleven" Pete wrote Red Water (Xmas Mourning) about how one year he had a lot of family die between Xmas's and how it depressed him. He was a great Lyricist. I never met him before his death sadly but he was always appreciative of his fans. I can say I miss him and Type O more and more each year. One thing you'll notice as you delve deeper into Type O is a lot of their songs have abrupt end's. I think they did it just to mess with people haha. They had a great sense of dark humour.

1:42 That "guitar" is Peter Steele's bass. He used a ton of distortion and chorus that really pronounced the top end. Makes is tone super crunchy, but it kinda sounds like TV static whenever he's playing chords (which he does a lot; and particularly so on Love You To Death). Under any other circumstances I'd probably hate it, but he just makes it work so well, I love it

Wow, what a pleasant surprise to see Type O appear. But, I’m also not surprised we’d get to this point. A little insight on this band for your journey, is that they’re are very tongue and cheek. Peter Steele (lead vocals and bass) had a great sense of humor and you’ll see that sprinkled throughout the rest of their discography. The next album you should check out is their second album “Bloody Kisses.” R.I.P. The Green Man.

I love this album so much, its easily in my top 5 of all time and maybe even top 3. It can put a smile on my face while bringing tears to my eyes at times, often in the same song. It's just the nostalgia and melancholy of the music combined with some bittersweet memories of my youth and even in more recent years it got me through a really tough time. This album really added that 80s kinda Depeche Mode vibe to great effect, it wouldn't have been the same without that influence on them. That old English flair you mentioned comes from one of their major influences, the Beatles. I'm sure others have pointed out that they consider their sound the Beatles meets Black Sabbath. They do some great Beatles and Sabbath covers too.

This is their best album, even though fans will choose any other albums as well. This album is their most cohesive and melodic it's almost like a concept album. A really dark, gothic, and romantic album, also very accessible. Such a masterpiece. Imagine they didn't have a drummer, all you hear are programmed drums. Also Pete Steele's bass did most of the distortion in this album, he made you believe there were layers of guitars but no. All his bass. Great bass player as well. It's Christmas *mourning*. I also fell for that pun, lol. Oh, what about the "I hate the morning" vocal delivery in Haunted? Phenomenal I'd love to have that deeeeeeep voice Pete had. P. S. Yeah, the comparison with my bloody valentine is valid, this album really crosses shoegaze territory.

Awesome band, incredible record. At the beginning, you commented on the haunting, reverberated guitar sound. That's largely thanks to Pete Steele's bass playing. He uses plenty of distortion and actually strums chords quite often, as well as individual notes. He basically plays it like rhythm guitar, a bit like Lemmy used to. Also, they tune the guitar and bass down to B.

'Breathy' and atmospheric is how I'd describe this album (at least in a sort of haunted fall-time northeast US way). It's a bit like the distortion is being used like synth pads, and you get that wash in the transitions. Also on warmth - I think the low/muddy guitar has a lot of warmth to it, so much of this makes me feel like I'm sitting outside next to the fire when it's 50 F with a mug of chowder.

I saw this band when I was 13 I think before bloody kisses even came out and unfortunately I was not prepared. I grew to love this band and never got a chance to see them again. Rip Peter

IMO ONE OF THE MOST HIGHLY UNDERRATED BANDS!!! I am by far from being into goth, death, metal. The only 2 bands that were like that, I actually listen to is Lacuna Coil and these guys (the drab 4). Origin and Slow, deep, and hard...if you are a true fan, you will give them a listen, but their 5 studio albums are just great!!! October Rust gets a lot of hype because it is their magnum opus and it's rare an album gets that much hype and I am all in. Do listen to bloody kisses next!!! I think, think, world coming down is my next fav but life is killing me comes in pretty close as well. First song I ever heard from these guys was blood and fire remix from the mortal kombat soundtrack. Was not until the I know what you did last summer soundtrack had summer breeze from them, and from there it was just Pete's vocals that I was like ok, I need more of this. Sad thing is it's a cover of seals and croft and was not actually Type o's song that really got my attention. The day when Pete died was such a sad day to me. This band is really something and stands out because they shown, you can infuse classic, pop, and doom and make it work in such a haunting and uneasy way like how NIN's did it back in the day and from time to time now. Love that you are getting a little dark with it, keep it coming!!!

Hey Molly, loving the videos. Not sure how good your headphones are but was wondering if it would be worth investing in some more upmarket ones so you can get all the layers. It's one thing I slept on for years and I don't know why with how much I listen to music lol. Not sure whether you have patreon or whether that buy me a coffee is the best place to send you some coin towards some.

I’ve always thought of their songs as being written like classical compositions in movements with complete changes in tone, key, tempo, etc. That’s sort of the only style I think of when I think of them as there isn’t a single genre that fits properly.

All it took was the first (technically third) song on this album to make me fall in love with Peter Steele, and begin the journey of exploring this wonderfully talented and beautiful band ✌🤍

first listened to this album in 1997. It was instant obsession. It's a classic, well written album. Peter had a major reverence for women and nature, not absent of the magical aspects of paganism. These themes are throughout their discography, but none moreso on this album. It's a very unwanted romanticism, if you will lol Fucking love Type O 🤘 even had the chance to see them live twice before Peter died

I had the pleasure of interviewing Peter Steele in the parking lot of City Gardens in NJ for my college radio station when the had just released Slow, Deep and Hard. I'm a large guy at 6'3" but he towered over me. He was giant. He was intelligent, engaging and cool. I had been told to not ask him about Carnivore, his previous band, but I did and he was very cool about the whole thing so I don't know why people said he didn't want to talk about it. Anyway Molly, you remind of those days because you would have fit right into the college radio/Underground music scene of the late 80's and early 90's. Definitely check out Slow, Deep and Hard.
