Quick rundown for folks unfamiliar with tennis or tennis games: much like a basketball player would initiate then release the ball at the optimal point of the kinetic chain when shooting… a tennis player would load (wind up like in baseball or backswing in golf) their body then uncoil their forehand, backhand, serve or any shot for that matter at an optimal time in the kinetic chain relative to the incoming ball. This translates well to holding down and releasing a face button in videogames and this mechanism has become the standard in tennis simulations since topspin 3 was released in the early 2000s. The face buttons would still correlate to the different types of tennis shots to hit (flat, topspin, slice/drop, lob) but the quality of the timing is what dictates the shots efficacy much like IRL tennis.

When the Sega Dreamcast released back in the days I loved playing Virtua Tennis 2 (arcade like controls, easy to learn, hard to master against good players). Recently I bought AO Tennis 2 on the PS5 to get back into the tennis game (more towards a mixed arcade/simulation compared to Virtua Tennis 2). Now I'm wondering what makes Top Spin 2K25 the better game compared to AO Tennis 2?

Idk about this, I was excited but now seeing the gameplay I'm kinda meh, Idk why they change so much about what made TopSpin so good, it was SO simple to play yet still somewhat challenging but the career just lacked a little depth, now the gameplay looks a bit overcomplicated for the sake of complication and a bit too slow imo
