16 years ago I had money for a one way ticket and 3 months to stay in Thailand. Had never been here before, didn't know the language, culture nothing. But I learned it all. Now this is my home, I speak and write Thai fluently, I'm part of the local (Thai) community and loving my life. If I started a KZfaq channel / vlog 16 years ago, oh boy what adventures world would have been able to go through together with me. I'm so glad I was courageous enough to jump into the unknown and see the "old Thailand" before internet came hare.

Glad to see you start the process of being a solo traveller. I did it many years ago for the first time when I moved to Japan for 6 years. It was tough sitting alone in the Toronto airport after saying good bye to friends and family after one of the best years of my life. I didn't know anyone in Japan, I had never been to Asia, I couldn't use chopsticks and I couldn't speak a word of Japanese. On the very first day of my new job as a teacher for which I had zero experience, my student's three year-old son looked at me and started crying - "it's a scary foreigner." I ended up having the time of my life in Japan. Many years later and I have been solo travelling the last 4 years straight (stranded in Malaysia during the beginning 6 months of the Pandemic - loved it!) and have now been to 106 countries on 6 continents (currently in Mendoza, Argentina, heading for Santiago, Chile tomorrow). You have nothing to fear but fear itself. Research well and the universe will take care of the rest. The world isn't dangerous - that is a media myth - the world is AWESOME, especially the people. I can say that as a fact because I have the experience everyday. You have nothing to fear but fear itself. Then everything will work out in the end - even if it doesn't. You'll see. BTW, you'll love Bangkok - one of my fav cities and I will be there in late October for a month.

I am a solo frequent traveller. This is the first vlog that I see from you. Good for you that you are out there on your own. I agree with you that it is important to be able to do things on your own. It makes you less vulnerable and stronger. I have a few traveller tips. 1. always pack a change in your handbag and toothbrush, toothpaste and other necessary things if your luggage get lost. 2. Always have an airtag in your luggage so you can track it. 3. know your rights before if things would happen. You hare too grateful to United for doing what they are obligated to do. I also think that you might are entitled to some other compensation. I do not know the American compensation laws that well but I heard there is something similar to the EU laws.4. if you are regular/frequent flyer get a Priority card. That will give you access to lounges all over the world. Specially good with delays. You will get snacks, drinks and a seat to relax while waiting. Some also have showers.5. when bags are delayed your insurance usually cover cost up to an amount to buy clothes and amenities. The best thing with bags being delayed is that you get your luggage delivered to you hotel/AirBnB. You are doing well.

I love traveling solo. It gives me an amazing sense of freedom. I can do what I want when I want. Being in a foreign country means I have to rely on my own wits to figure out the restaurant menu, find a location using public transit or simply struggle with the local language and possibly make a new friendship. Embrace it! 🎉

You're tough. You're strong. I'm sure that, despite Lloyd arranging things in the past, you have picked up lots of skills that will serve you well. While it was a pain, it's probably good that everything didn't go perfectly. It's always great for our confidence to have to solve problems. I was once caught in a riptide in Hawaii. The lifeguard was standing on the beach ready to fish me out if necessary but I made it to shore alone. I was so glad he gave me the opportunity to look after myself. It was a great confidence builder. Have a wonderful time in Bangkok. I'm looking at airfare for the fall. Can't wait to return. I miss Thailand so much.

Hahaha. It's just so sweetly ironic how just when you're starting off on your "lone adventure organising everything by yourself", literally EVERYTHING goes wrong and is utter chaos without you even being at fault :-P It's the universe making full use of its opportunity to teaching you some extra independence lessons hehe. Equally funny how you keep telling yourself how much you're enjoying your solo trip when it's blatantly obvious you're missing Lloyd every step of the way and *not* really enjoying it hehe. Nothing wrong about enjoying each other's company, it's what we were made for :)

I'm getting more into fermented veggies, and find it a cost effective way to live without refrigeration in a camper, boost my digestive system, get extra vitamins, and add some super tangy zing into my meals. Hi Mandy, I know what you mean by saying you’re not confrontational, too nice, don’t want to make trouble for other people, etc. it’s very Canadian. I leave with one. I’m Aussie (Polish origin) and my partner is from Canada. We talked about these traits many times, he’s the same😁. You handled the situation extremely well with asking for different flights and hotel. Help is there, when you need it! I love travelling, the biggest disaster was I ended up in Barcelona without my luggage, just the hand luggage with spare underwear. Had to go back to the airport to collect my lost case, no support from travel insurance, and no empathy from hotel staff. But I would go back to Spain any time! 😊. Good luck in Bangkok, it’s enormous and beautiful city! 👏 And I’m also a mum to 2 black labradors, it’s so difficult to leave them behind when travelling. ☹️

If they gave you $75 in food credit, they probably thought you were going to eat at the airport. I made that mistake a few years ago; I'm too used to YVR's policy of the prices must be the same as they'd be elsewhere, and so I didn't eat dinner until I was at SFO. Those vouchers would have gone quick there. Good to see you enjoying being in charge of your own travel; you'll be leading Lloyd around pretty soon.
