Learned this lesson the hard way when I loaned my "friend" $200 to make rent and they promised they would pay me back after getting their first paycheck at their new job. They got fired for not showing up for the first shift, he stopped responding to my texts, and I've never seen that money to this day. I guess I learned the lesson pretty cheap compared to a lot of other stories I've heard.

Yep. I read somewhere that something like 60 percent of people will borrow money from someone they know during their lifetimes, and about half of that 60 percent don’t pay the full amount back to the person who loaned them the money. I never knew the stats showed that many people out there borrowing money and not paying it back.

I did something clever to a "friend" who owed me 800+. She would dodge my messages unless it was only to benefit her monetarily. After several "promised dates of payment" i became aggressive towards her and serious. Saying i would tske her to court. She told me she dont like the law in her business. So I made up a new number and sent her an "official" message from the court saying I was a court appointed aid to the judge and I was given the case to find a resolution. I sent her all the "evidence" and screenshots from this number saying that's the plantiffs(me) evidence and told her that there's enough evidence if we went to trial and she ended up making weekly payments finally to resolve the issue. She acts tough but the bottom line is when they are threatened with 200 dollars weekly coming out of a check vs 50 bucks a week, they come around real fast.

I once borrowed about $2200 from a dear friend, when a house closing came up with higher costs than I expected and I was short. I insisted that we draw up a promissory note where I would pay her interest equal to her savings account and payback in full within one year. She wasn’t worried but I said, what if I croak? I Want you to have your money back. So, I paid it back in full in about six months and she was very happy. So...put it in writing people, even with closest friends or family.

@maryrenaud6732
@maryrenaud6732 4 жыл бұрын
Turny Tomtom this was back in 1978 when wages were much lower. As this was in San Francisco, the housing costs were also fairly high compared to earnings. We had to come up with $26,000, equivalent to $102,388 today. My friend preferred one payment in full so we saved the money for this and $2200 is about $9000 today. This means we saved up $370 per month, equivalent to $1460 today. I used the CPI inflation calculator which understates dollar valve comparison to today.

@@maryrenaud6732 A Promissory Note isn't worth the paper it's written on if the borrower files for bankruptcy. Ask me how I know.
@maryrenaud6732
@maryrenaud6732 4 жыл бұрын
Ozark Ed I am not naive about this. However, you have to know your borrower and certainly if they are a deadbeat I assume they will bankrupt out of their obligation or simply not pay. I would not throw out the 80 to 90% who are honorable for the 10 to 20% who are dishonorable. If they simply have circumstances where they cannot pay due to things like medical issues, even the honorable sometimes cannot pay debts. As a matter of fact, I have lent money to people who were in dire straits (lacking rent money) on a handshake, with no expectation of repayment and all eventually repaid in full. Sometimes you have to decide to trust in God and help those in need. It is only for larger amounts that you need documentation.
@ozarked2363
@ozarked2363 4 жыл бұрын
@@maryrenaud6732 I wasn't implying you were naïve, but I certainly was. I loaned money to the guy who was my Best Man in my wedding. We'd been friends since high school. I loaned him $6000 to help his cabinet business. He and his wife both signed a Promissory Note with interest payments. That all goes out the window once bankruptcy is filed. Doesn't matter what his intentions were to pay it back. You can't really take someone to court to collect on a note if they don't have the money to pay it. Caveat Emptor.

I gave money to a friend once. It was to keep his lights on (literally). I told him, despite him insisting he'd pay me back, that the money never needed to be paid back. I haven't heard from him since then (6-7 years ago). I think he was too embarrassed to stay friends. He was also an outspoken atheist (despite being very inwardly conflicted, as he revealed in our talks about it), and no one would help him out but me (his outspoken Christian friend). Even though we haven't talked in a long time, I hope he knows I bear no ill-will towards him and I hope he remembers who his real friend was in hard times.

In some states it's very hard to evict a tenant that doesn't pay, if they game the system properly it can take over a year. There are people that do this all the time, move into an apartment where the owner doesn't do a proper background check, and just never pay, and when they're finally evicted around a year later they just find the next sucker to do it over again.

For anyone wondering, you CANNOT evict your own roommate on a co-signed lease. If that roommate stops paying their half, you still have to cover their half and pay the full rent to the landlord. You can sue the roommate in small claims court if you have supporting documentation that details the rent structure (this is why written roommate agreements are terribly important). You can explain the situation to the landlord, but it will be both of you who get evicted if full payments stop coming in.

I have a roommate who's owed me a few thousand dollars worth of rent for well over a year. She doesn't pay regularly (sometimes once every two months, sometimes once every 6 weeks) and I don't even think she knows how much she owes me because though I routinely update a rent shared document, she doesn't check it. I told her this June that I would need that money back by the end of this year, because I have tuition to pay, and she said ok. Well it's close to mid November and the balance sheet looks about the same as June. I don't want to make a scene with her about it either, because she makes minimum wage and I know she is down on money. Though it irks me when she goes and eats out and spends money on restaurant trips or weekend getaways because I feel like she doesn't take me seriously or the money she owes me seriously. Don't be a conflict avoiding pushover like I am.

Years ago my best friend asked for money because his truck was going to get repossessed. Feeling bad I helped him out. He disappeared and I had to track him down; I got $200 back but he skipped out on the rest. That was the end of our friendship. I spoke to him once again, years after lending him the money, but it was clear that we were no longer friends.

Bought a house with a long time roommate. I'd always kept track of the bills and told her what she owed; she accused me of cheating her. OK, you handle it. We fell 4 months behind on everything. I'd take her to small claims court. The judgement for rent will effect her credit until it's paid off and beyond. That's tough, but it's what big people have to deal with in every day life. Otherwise, she'll never learn to be responsible like a big person. If the shoe was on the other foot, you'd be sued in an instant.
