After years of breathing in the flux fumes, not being extracted by my Hakko 493 desktop Extractor Fan, and having space issues when trying to extract fumes alongside my bench magnifier or trinocular microscope, it was time to find (and upgrade) to a more powerful, effective, and flexible Fume Extractor!
Join me as I demonstrate my extractor issues, and review my newly arrived KOTTO Strong Suction Hose Fume Extractor.
TL;DR: This thing is awesome!

Great little fume extractor for hobby soldering, I used to use high RPM SUNON fan with a grill and a hepa filter. These "carbon" filters basically do nothing the room still filled with smoke, hepa filters actually filter out smoke, carbon filters filter out odors and chemicals. You can buy hepa filters for this unit, I highly recommend it. BTW all fume extractors are loud, if it's not loud it just blows away the fume without filtering it properly. If you can't ventillate the room, you should buy real fume extractor with 3 stage filtering. In my opinion the carbon filter is useless for soldering, not so much for burned plastic and paint odor.

Thanks for the advice. I'll look into it further. In reality, the extractor is probably just pulling the fumes from going straight up my nose, but then just depositing the fumes elsewhere in the room. I imagine this still beats no extractor at all. But a proper filtration system would be healthier!

Thanks for the video, and thanks for showing the back side. I've watched other videos on this item and no one would show the back exhaust side, so thank you. I think I'm now sold on this fume extractor.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm thoroughly enjoying using the Kotto. I wish I'd discovered it earlier! Primarily, it's the fact that it can sit out of the way, but with the nozzle positioned exactly where you need it to work very effectively at flux fume removal. So, yes, I can still highly recommend this Kotto.

Thank you for taking the time to give us your analysis. This helps me make a decision on a fume extractor.

Thanks for your comment. I'm still enjoying my Kotto fume extractor. It's probably up there as one of my best purchase decisions for an everyday use item, that's no doubt also good for protecting your health.

I bought one of these a couple of years ago and I've used it on and off for hobby stuff. I quite like it. Why KZfaq has suddenly and out of the blue put you in my video feed is a bit of a disturbing question and one in going to try not to dwell on. It's a little outside of my normal recommendations. With that said a couple of observations. I absolutely agree that a 50% is perfect setting for a soldering iron. It's lights enough and the neck is long enough that I don't have to keep adjusting it, I can just pull it around my desk. And lastly the plastic has a lowish melting point and will not enjoy being tapped by a soldering iron. Kotto really didn't engineer that well. (of course if I was smart I would wrap it in heavy foil or something. But I'm not so I haven't)

Thanks for your comment. You make a good point warning about the plastic. Fortunately, I haven't tapped it with my soldering iron (yet), so all is good here. But definately an observation to keep in mind! 🤓

Awesome! It'd be great to see what you come up with. Will you possibly make a video of your solution for others to build?

These type of filters are well worth the expense, I got this one "OKI BVX-200 Fume Extraction Unit" I used to used it before the medical design company i was working at went bust. won it at Auction as they sold off the equipment.

That looks like a nice solution, if you’re lucky enough to get hold of one at a wallet friendly price. In my case, I don’t have the space for a larger floor mounted unit, nor the budget for a more “pro” solution. Perhaps also why I was so impressed with this little Kotto unit. Another day of soldering and not a single fume up my nose! :)

Nice little unit, there is something nice about the cardboard filter try it's organic, but also very naff !....cheers.

True, cardboard is more eco-friendly, but also a “finish quality” contrast to the otherwise nicely built unit. Although, as a maker, it was also a nice “Oh something I can make” moment, but then discovered I’d been beaten to it. :)

Thanks for this! I'm wondering how was it controlled by the potentiometer or perhaps an encoder, could you perhaps take a look of the little pcb there? I'm trying to make a DIY of this since getting one is too expensive for my budget and it will be a lot more fun to build it :)

Sounds like a plan. As I'm not one to ever need an excuse to open things up (again), I've done exactly what you asked and published a blog post, including photos of the controller PCB, and dedicated it to your request. :) You can view my findings on the controller here: digicoolthings.com/koto-fume-extractor-speed-controller/ It would be great to know how your DIY project progresses. Perhaps you could post a video, for others interested in doing the same? Have fun!

@@DigicoolThings Thank you so much!! Yes I'll try posting a video if ever I'm done with these :) I actually have a PWM controller now using a CMOS 555 IC and it feels like there's a better components I can use for this project, perhaps a microcontroller (based on the googling I did)? Again thank you so much!

What magnifier do you use? It looks nice.
@DigicoolThings

My desk mounted LED magnifier is a Duratech model, specifically their 5 Dioptre 127mm lens model. I remember they also had a 3 Dioptre model, which didn't have the magnification I wanted. It works great as a handy repositionable magnifier, as well as just a good desk lamp. Hope this helps.

Thanks. Nice review however 3 minutes on fan you’re getting rid of seemed like a lot. 1/3 of your video dedicated to the one you’re scrapping.

Thanks for your comment. Well, the video wasn’t scripted, but to be fair it was a fume extractor “Upgrade” video (not simply a Kotto review), so it was appropriate that I explained the reasoning that drove my Hakko to Kotto upgrade. :)

@@DigicoolThings Understood. Makes sense. I misinterpreted. I thought the upgrade was the filter holder on the Kotto.
