My Garden Update - GroBuckets, SIP Buckets (Not A Fishing Video)

For those wondering what plants grew and are growing in my GroBuckets and Sub Irrigated Planters aka Self Watering Tubs, we now have an update. Please don't get bored. Home gardening is not our expertise so much of it is trial and error. With shelter-in-place, we have plenty of time at home, growing our own vegetables and essentially, eating our garden. Excellent tour of your garden. I'm in central Texas where is has been super hot and without rain for a few months now. I'm off grid and only use rain harvested water. It's been rough keeping my in-ground raised bed garden alive and my water supply is running low. I'm now setting up wicking buckets in the hopes of conserving water. I appreciate all the detail you gave and I hope to use your information to get mine to produce. Blessings to you and your lovely family.

Good to hear. I'm still learning on what type of plants grow well on them. Soil gets spent fast so take care adding new soil, compost and nutrients, Neglect those and surely the plant will suffer too. I learned this by being lazy. Good luck gardening.

Loved your garden and appreciate the tour! This is my 2nd season with self-wicking containers with pots and buckets. I really like it. I was wondering how did you secure the chicken wire to the buckets?

To help you out with your plants food while planting place a few fish in your grow bucket add 😉 some coffee grind 😉 to keep your smell down then fill with the good soil

Hey Carlos! I cannot wait for trout season to start back up in the Bay Area, do you know where I can find stocking reports and up to date fishing reports for places around fremont like, Quarry Lakes and Lake Chabot? Any help would be awesome, Thanks!

East Bay Park District has a fishing site called Anglers Edge and of course the state has one too. Just Google it. With Covid restrictions, postings are not really accurate unfortunately. So as far as I know, no trout stocking has happened yet. Thanks for watching.

Whats a good soil mixed do you use? Thank you for your video

I find the Kellogg organic potting soil as an ok medium to use but I add coco-coir, worm castings and top it with Kellogg Garden Soil as mulch. I do amend the soil with wood ash, organic fertilizer (2-4-3), garden lime, bone meal, dried fish emulsion extract, mineral sea salt, and epsom salt depending on what plant I will grow. You need to get yourself Fox farms soils get Strawberryfields style it's truly a hot blend 👌 meaning package with excellent quality grow nutrients for every bag you can mix 2 bags with it any other soil that you have and truly trust me you will see 👀 how important it is for running good 👍 soil

What is your conclusion about holes in the tub to do root pruning in wicking tubs? Is it worth it? Does it work, compared to solid-side tubs?

I recently uprooted a couple of buckets and saw the root ball is prolific with center root system growing long and deep into the tub. The health of the plant was dependent on the soil quality. In conclusion, I will continue to use air pruning.

Great info. How far above the drain hole for the SIP did you start your root-pruning holes? 2, 3, 4 inches?
