What's in your bag? It's a question I get fairly often. So here is my current GHB setup along with my thought process on putting one together and my GHB philosophy...

I work from home and don’t typically stray more than 10 miles but even I keep a small GHB in my trucks at all times. I actually keep a 31gal tote in both our SUV’s. In the tote: GHB, jackets and footwear for the whole family, 2 spare mags in belt holder for my EDC, large flashlight, headlamp, tools, shovel, surplus wool blanket, tarp, flares, duct tape, daytrex bars and snacks, water filter, bottled water, medical gear with boo-boo kit, fire extinguisher, butt wipes, change of clothes for the kids, etc.

Nice bag, but I do have a suggestion. Carry your wool socks in a glad bag and pre-powder them. I know it's just a 24 hr. get home bag, but life doesn't always follow your plan. I'd also add a small pack of antibiotic hand wipes and a micro fiber towel to clean the feet after a day of hiking. Nothing refreshes you as a pr. of clean, dry feet (that's where the hand wipes and micro fiber towel comes in) and a soft pair of powdered socks. I also am a believe in a truck gun, but I use a PCC, pistol caliber carbine, instead of my full sized MBR. I carry a Kel-Tek Sub2000 in .40 caliber that uses Glock magazines. That way I have to carry a single type of magazine for my EDC and truck gun. So I have 4 15 rd. mags for the EDC or the truck gun and 4 22 rd. magazines primarily for the truck gun, but can be used in my EDC if necessary. That gives me 75 rds. for the EDC (1 mag in the pistol, 4 extra either on my person or in the GHB) and 88 rds. for the truck gun. I don't figure on fighting a war on the way home, but I live about 40 miles from Chicago and a lot of its troubles are spreading out to rural areas like mine. So I may have to modify my planned route home for a longer, safer one and who knows what else I may run into if the troubles get that bad. I also test my gear at least twice a year in different types of weather. Living where you do you know how quickly weather can change. I am surprised at how many people put together a BOB or GHB, but never test it to see how well everything works. So my group and I run test weekends using just whatever bag we're testing to see that everything still works as planned and that we still remember how everything works. That's another mistake I see people make during classes I teach. They show up for a GHB or BOB only weekend, never having tested their gear and try to survive the entire weekend on just what's inside the bag. Many, many time they've never even opened up the gear, it's still in the original packaging. It's very funny, and yet very sad, to watch them try to get a fancy, expensive hiking tent set up that we've just opened up or breaking in a brand new pair of boots or....well you get the idea. So I'm constantly telling people to test their gear, and at the same time, test yourself while you still can safely. If you wait until SHTF for real it may well be too late. Sorry for the rant, but people who fool themselves thinking because they bought the gear their favorite YT blogger suggested they're ready for whatever problem comes their way is one of my personal hot buttons.

Thanks for your comment! Great idea about the pre-powdered socks, who'd have thought! I couldn't agree more about using the gear in your bags and being intimately familiar with it before its needed. You remark about people buying gear just because a YT dude says it's great is a peeve of mine too. I've always tried to share an honest opinion on what works for me in my area and situation and I won't recommend anything that hasn't passed my own expectations through my own use. There's alot of info out there and like Amazon reviews they have to be taken with a grain of salt. Most reviewers don't have a clue as to what they are talking about.
@keithsimpson2492

@@themodernminuteman2557 I don't have a problem with the reviewers and their recommendations. That's how many of them earn a living and I think they give an honest review most of the time. But what the viewers don't understand is that the guy giving the review has had the item supplied to him/her, usually for free and they've had the item for a lot longer than just the time on the video, often months at a time. So the reviewer has had the time to learn how to use the product and will only show it in the best light. The poor guy depending on that item because he saw Joe Expert put the tent up in 30 seconds doesn't realize it took Mr. Expert weeks to be able to do that. So when the new prepper buys the tent and tries to use it for the first time, often in the field and during a class he/she paid good money for, he gets frustrated and angry. All I'm asking is that when you buy a new piece of gear, use it first in your backyard and keep practicing until you're comfortable with it. I keep saying tent, but I've seen the same thing happen with all sorts of other gear from automatic fishing reels to alcohol stoves. People think all they need is the right, expensive gear and they're all set. But just like buying a firearm doesn't make you a marksman, getting top of the line gear doesn't make you a prepper/survivalist. You need to spend time at the range with expert guidance to be able to use that firearm safely and accurately and it's the same thing with learning about survivalism. As for the socks tip, can't claim credit for it. That was drummed into my head from the first day in basic training at Ft. Campbell, KY through AIT at Ft. Belvior, VA and jump school at Ft. Benning, GA.. Then repeated when I was sent to Vietnam. If you don't take care of your feet, they will fail you and you'll become a liability to the unit. To this day I wash my feet every night and put fresh, clean powdered socks on every morning. And my feet have never caused me a bit of trouble.

Lots of stuff to go thru here. 1. looks like a great channel with tons of information and no fear porn. I like it Subscribed. 2. Do you also carry extra food in your car just incase your past your 20 miles? 3. Is water scarce where your at that its worth the weight of a 6pk of water? Or would you have to go out of the way to get water. 4. I understand this is a summer set up. Good set up, have you tried the tact bivy. Not all are made the same. Not sure if you ever slept in one before. I had one not last the night had another last for 4 trips. 5. Id love to see you do your Titan 10 mile challenge with this gear just to see if everything works. We need more people out here testing gear. Really like the idea of your philosophy behind the kit

Thanks for your comment and questions! I appreciate it. I'm glad you get where I was going with this! I do keep extra food in the form of a box of granola bars and box of beef sticks. Easy to eat things that can be shoved in pockets and eaten on the go. The 6-pack of water replaced a gallon jug I use to keep in my car. My thought is with the 2 liters I keep in my pack that a straight up gallon jug would be difficult to carry/consume so the smaller bottles would enable me to grab and go stuffing bottles in jacket pockets or pant cargo pockets. Water availability isn't really an issue in my area but taking time to procure that water could lead to unwanted exposure and possible route deviation. Today is a good example of a 91° day with high humidity where one would be going through quite a bit of water being on the move. I guess I'd rather have the water available to grab in the car if needed versus not. Good observation and question. I've used a product similar to the tact bivy but never this exact one. The reviews I've seen are all over the place with it so my best hope was for it to be a one time use item. I should do an outing with just this setup. From vehicle exfil to a designated safe spot. We have a 10 miler coming up so maybe I can work that idea into it. Thanks again!

I get it everybody like their gear. Within 20 miles this is wayyy too much. If it got that bad where I had to abandon my vehicle and get to my family the last thing I’m thinking about is sleeping and making coffee. Within 20 miles I can use my edc (Glock 43x, knife, flashlight) and a couple bottles of water and a couple granola bars. I can run carrying just that and get to my family asap.

There is basically NO carry option here in NJ. So firearms are out. I also agree that environment dictates equipment for mission as well as mission itself. I also try and have eye pro. Day and night. When things burn…there is usually embers etc in the air. Get one in your eye…you get the idea. Also…once people start “ tossing bricks” there can be a lot of debris flying…again…protect the eyes. I try to keep the weight to 10% of my body weight..travel light…freeze at night.

Reasonable bag, well thought out. Now come the hard news, something I have myself had to focus on…time to get in shape. I assume you have. GHB is because you want to be prepared for risks that are on the horizon but if we (all of us in the prepared community) are not in shape our foundation is weak. Also I hope you are training with your gear.

Speed is definitely the most important. My philosophy is based on JFKs 50 mile challenge, which is to move 50 miles in a 20 hour period. I drive a class B truck to deliver lumber and 50-60 miles is about the radius that we'll service. A situation bad enough to abandon the vehicle and walk home would also put society on the timer of "three meals to anarchy." You're looking at 24-36 hours at most before you're in danger from simply not being in a secure area. I carry a 3L hydration bladder, iodine water purification, change of clothes and socks, very little food, and rain gear if it's in the forecast. Keep it Simple Stupid and except for the iodine its all stuff I use throughout the day anyways. My biggest threat is being in central Oklahoma in summer, which means 105-110 degrees plus humidity. This means first finding a shady spot with a breeze and waiting until night lol.
@themodernminuteman2557
@themodernminuteman2557 3 жыл бұрын
Your "3-meals to anarchy" comment is of huge importance. We talk here about the day folks EBT cards quit working and how you've basically got a 24 hr window before they start rioting. I've been in the grocery store and seen folks assistance cards not work and seen the instant reaction to it. It's not good. Gotta know your area of operations and outer lying area of interest and know where you're gonna run into this kind of trouble. Good stuff brother!

@@themodernminuteman2557 no kidding. Most people forget that our modern way of life amounts to an enormous social experiment. For nearly a thousand generations the primary mode of transportation was the horse. But in the span of a single lifetime we have gone from Custer's last stand to Armstrong walking on the moon. Our current technology is worth all the praise it's been given but the infrastructure that supports it is so incredibly fragile. We are entering a generation now where modern technology is all that anyone alive has ever known. When it gets interrupted or this experiment fails, people will lose their minds. The means and necessities our ancestors had to get through a day are almost entirely forgotten. I'm 31 and am trying to learn how people got by in the 19th century. Mostly because I love history and don't want old ways to be forgotten but also just as a means of security for my family.

Thoughts: Great opening...like your philosophy...one point I would add to your list would be "identification of resources", that is, where along my planned routes can I find water, potential campsites, food, medical assistance, etc. But on a more serious note, what exactly are you arming yourself against? "Civil unrest"?? "Communist" neighbors?? "Antifa"?? (Or are you on the left side of the fence already, and don't trust the right wingnuts?) Or are there a lot of bears, or rutting moose or elk between your job and your home? I don't get it, bro. This is America. There are clear processes for settling our political differences by holding elections and creating bipartisan coalitions in our legislatures. Why are we turning to arms as a "solution"? Why do you think you will have to shoot your way through hostile territory just to get home? I guess if, as others have commented, there is some kind of breakdown of civic order, or a grid down event where supply chains are interrupted, that some people could get desperate and act irrationally, but I'm not sure that's cause to shoot anyone. Maybe I'm being naive... I work 40 miles from home every day, and I have a bag designed to get me home over about 10 to 15 hours, on foot. I have plotted and tested several different routes. I know where the water, food, medical aid and campsites are. I certainly don't expect anyone to try to stop me from walking home. Don't get me wrong...I carry personal protection, to be sure, and furthermore, I know how to use it effectively; but I'm not walking through rigged for combat, for chrissakes. Or should I be? I guess I just don't understand what some of my fellow citizens think is going to happen. Enlighten me, please. Seriously, I want to know...
@themodernminuteman2557
@themodernminuteman2557 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment! Great items to bring up with route planning concerning mapping out of resources! Know your area, friendly help and foe, and dangers within... Speaking of, your questions concerning what purpose arming up is for is legitimate and everyone is going to have different answers based on their own needs, preparations, plans, and fears... I don't believe what I have laid out here is anywhere close to being prepared for combat, my loadout considering armament (personal protection) here is purely defensive based on the possible scenarios that exist or could exist within my area as determined from multiple area surveys I've done. High crime areas already exist in my area and I've seen what happens in my AO when the simplest of things go sideways. I'd rather be prepared based on my assessments of the "what ifs" than be caught with my guard down. The threats don't need to be from "antifa", "communists", "anti-government people", radical left/right wingers", or any other labeled faction but instead its the threat from evil doers and opportunists who would seize on the opportunity to prevent you or anyone else from accomplishing their task at hand (getting home during a social collapse scenario)... My hope and plan is for an uneventful passage home but Murphy's Law is always present and if rather be on the side of preparedness than be a statistic... I'm sure I could go on but that's my line of thinking and planning with my GHB... Now preparing for combat, that's a different bag setup! 😉 YMMV...
