Hiya!
I’m Ellie and this channel follows me on my journey through life, navigating chronic illness and disability in a world that wasn’t designed for us. Welcome to 2023! There are a lot of things I've been too scared to do for the past 6 years of my life living with disability and this is the year to beat that fear. I have put together quite the extensive list of things I've been too afraid to do but I will be combatting that this year!

Those are such amazing goals to set! I’m super excited, because yesterday I had an appointment with my doctor, and I asked her about the idea of me getting a wheelchair for going out, and she thought it was a great idea. So I’m going to try out a wheelchair in a shop that the store provides a few times to see how I like it, and then if all goes well, get myself wheelchair. That will probably be my biggest project for 2023. Like you, I am nervous to go out in public in a wheelchair when I could just walk and suffer later. But obviously if I could have the option of using a chair to be out longer and enjoy myself, I should take advantage of that opportunity. I feel that this is my first step to trying to improve my life while living with CFS instead of waiting to get better.Because though I am working to trying to heal my body, of course I may never heal. It’s going to open up so many opportunities. My family has talked about going on vacation, and a wheelchair would be so much help in the airports. If all goes well with getting a chair, my goals will be very similar to yours. So you won’t be alone. 💗 Like I have told you before, I don’t live in England. But I do follow a woman who has CFS and uses a wheelchair. She does a lot of traveling, and has a ton of videos on accessible restaurants, hotels etc. She also has a blog. Her KZfaq channel is Life with Pippa. Maybe she could be someone to look into for info on traveling around the UK? Here is a link to one of her videos: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f9qofZt8zbXbin0.html

Im so glad your dr appointment went well! It's a great idea to try the ones at the shops before deciding if its right for you. Its great your parents are supportive too. Let me know how it goes and what you decide to do! I think I follow them on instagram but their youtube channel looks great

Hey! For most of these things, take another person with you! Having someone else there, just their presence is so helpful. For the tube in London, (I'm an ambulatory wc user) find the stops with escalators and lifts, as those with just lifts is very limiting. I just got out of my chair, gripped onto the railing and went down the escalator whilst my friend held my chair in place. Awkward and annoying but cheaper than a taxi... With restaurants, my first time using my wc I went to a place I knew well, so I knew the layout, the toilets, the entrance, etc. With shopping, I actually highly recommend Primark, they are usually pretty good about having them clear of any 'storage boxes' and are pretty spacious, along with hand rails. Also they usually have a checkout machine on the end with space for you to roll your chair underneath the counter. Still stupidly high up though... Hope this helps a little?!

I will deffo be taking one of my parents with me as they are the people I feel most comfortable being in my wheelchair with. I think I've build up in my mind that its either full wheelchair use when I'm out or nothing but your suggestion about escalators is a great one! Thank you for all the help!

The scariest thing I did last year was travelling to Scotland from Yorkshire on the train by myself in my wheelchair, passenger assistance were amazing and made it possible. I liked feeling independent but it was stressful but I'm proud of myself for doing it. I hope you get to do the things on your list! A lot of it is practice and exposure to certain environments as well as building up slowly. Also not being too harsh on yourself if things get overwhelming or don't go to plan! Good luck!!

Adaptive snowboarding was so empowering!! Made me realize I really can do anything just how I get there does have to look different. As for other places to go, when I got sick I was terrified of going to visit friends. Not the close ones, who knew what I was going through, but the ones who only knew what I posted on social media. I was terrified they would see how I was struggling because I knew it would be hard to hide, that they wouldn’t accommodate my needs, that they would judge me. Honestly I still struggle with this- with feeling ok being seen unwell by people who knew me before. Lmfao honestly they do make it weird most of the time. But I need more practice with this too.

I really want to try adaptive skiing or snowboarding this year!! I completely get what you say about seeing friends! I’m the same even when they come to my house I tend to just tend to sit on the sofa and let my mum make drinks and stuff for them rather than them seeing me struggle when I can’t do it.

This is so relatable! Going out and about as a visibly disabled person is scary. Especially if you have the choice to 'hide' your disability instead. And able bodied people have no idea how much thinking and planning goes into making activities accessible for ourselves. I flew with my wheelchair on two vacations so far. It went all well but it still is a scary thing to be honest. For one of them I went to Greece to see a friend. And I was pretty scared at first that I couldn't do the activities and sight seeing he had in mind. I told him very explicitly beforehand what my needs are and it was amazing. He did so much thinking along and planning for me and I was able to see so many incredible things there. So I'd definitely recommend to jump out of your comfort zone. It's so worth it! And I mean you have those moments in 'smaller situations' as well. Like going to do your groceries in a wheelchair. Or standing up in tbe shop to reach something from a top shelf. But yeah, you don't get more confident without practice. So good luck with all your goals in 2023. I am looking forward to see some of those things one here if you get the chance to film them.

I completely agree! I think the planning is a step i need to get used to because it just makes everything feel like its so much effort. Hopefully it will just become second nature at some point but at the minute I'm not so sure. I will deffo film anything from the list that I get done!

I was worried about going swimming in a wheelchair but it was perfectly fine. 😊 Wagamama's has removable seats where I live. Good luck with your goals.

Ooh I’ve never been swimming with the chair but I don’t really go swimming a lot anyway so I might have to try it in the future. Good to hear about Wagamamas loads of people have said they have a removable bench so that’s great!

wagamas is actaully pretty good for wheelchair users, they normally have a part of the bench they can remove so you can stay in your chair, I normally just use the high ones as my electric is high enough. you can also transfer if you want to. I would recommend first trying at a quite time.

Ooh this is worth knowing! I had no idea and would’ve bet money it would be the least accessible because of the benches!
