This is such a well constructed song... the verse is in a minor key while the lyrics are sad, then it switches to a major key in the chorus as the lyrics become more hopeful. And where some songs struggle to find 1 hook, this song has 3 hooks. Definitely one of my favorite of their songs.

ABBA were NEVER FOR EVEN A MOMENT "...the largest Corporation in Sweden..." - what a silly, ignorant notion - because ABBA, to begin with, was not a corporation like VOLVO and SAAB, etc. Both of which employing thousands upon thousands, for starters, a workforce that absurdly dwarfs whatever was the actual number of people on ABBA's payroll at any point in the pop group's existence.

@@kennyhuskisson2684 So do I - I was 11 when "Take a Chance On Me" came out. It was one of the first singles I bought and another being "Video Killed the Video Star" by The Buggles. Both singles blew my young mind. Just growing up with this level of musical talent was a privilege and then (obviously) 80's synth-pop and metal bands in the UK. I love rock and metal bands but still love ABBA even now. The wall of sound they produce in the chorus of "S.O.S." is just unbelievable - such a well constructed and well produced song. The one we sang along to as kids was (of course) "When I kissed the teacher" ... erm ... maybe one you shouldn't play now 🤣🤣🤣

ABBA has a very deep catalogue. When you dig beneath the most famous hits, you find even more great songs. In terms of style, except for pop I think they had a musical component to many of their songs. The two guys actually composed for some musicals after ABBA (for example Chess). So I think part of the secret is that it´s not just simple pop, the songs have a complexity to them as well. Musically, lyrically, conceptually, production wise and in terms of performance.

ABBA! They just knew how to bring it and the fact that they have grown and grown in popularity and have grown to be recognized for the absolute brilliant musicians and artists they are and have always been, as a lifelong ABBA fan who remembers when they were dismissed as just a commercial pop band who’s music was vacant and created for no other reason than to make themselves rich and successful. Well, they did become internationally hugely successful and yes, very rich, however, the goal was to create quality music with integrity and technically as close to perfection as possible. The fact that in retrospect many of their most successful songs were actually anything but “vacant”, in fact they were extremely full of emotion and were personal statements in many instances about situations they went through in their personal lives. It makes the music all the more powerful in retrospect given how they never engaged the media or entertainment and music outlets to exploit those personal traumas and pains to promote whichever of the many hits they had based on those personal, painful situations. That’s another reason why they have only become more popular as the years have gone by and the truths behind those songs become more universally known and acknowledged. ❤ABBA❤

These are my top three Abba songs: The Name of the Game, Waterloo and SOS. React accordingly. I know you will because you always give us what we want. Y'all are the best, right up there with Alex and Andy. You guys deliver three times the content of everybody else. At least! Keep up the good work!

I think what makes the piano on their songs sound so good is that Benny plays an upright versus a grand piano that most musicians use.

Back in the day when this song was a hit single I was stunned by it every time I heard it on the radio. A classical sound, pop vocal with a crashing rock chorus...just amazing ! As a young teen I instantly became hooked on ABBA through SOS. A couple of this group's songs I suggest a reaction to are 'Eagle' the long LP version and 'The Visitors'

so nice to see you with another reaction to ABBA songs I've been waiting for You (it's a little joke, because these phrase is a tittle of another ABBA song in these álbum) specialy because these is my favourite ABBA song of all times, 'The Masterpiece' for excellence between more ABBA masterpieces "S.O.S." (1975) has a story It was one of Their first recordings after the greatest success of "Waterloo" in Eurovisión, just four months later, in August 1974 But it waited almost a year for its release, in June 1975 at Sweden, September 1975 at UK and US (the next singles after Waterloo was, in these order: Ring Ring (re-entry), So long (at 1974), and "I do I do I do I do I do", and finally "S.O.S." when " "S.O.S." have your chance to be a single, it picks at #6 in U.K. and #15 in U.S. being Their second hit in both countries at the same time, and six #1 (including Germany Australia) and more Top 10 in several countries of all continents and after these, ABBA had 18 Top 10 consecutives in UK between 1975/1982, for example: Mamma Mía, Fernando, Dancing Queen, Take a chance con me, Chiquitita, The winner takes it all, Super trouper etc "S.O.S." in less than 200 seconds is a gem, a Masterpiece! The transitions from the dramatic opening (a dingy piano and a cracking voice of the blonde singerAgnetha) to a powerful rock beat with catchy pop chorus in the middle are brilliant ABBA marked an era in many ways One was the musical leadership of its beautiful and lofty female vocalists as the center of attention Another was the use of contrasts, such as sad lyrics with catchy melodies and harmonies And their recording tecnique "wall of sound" gives ABBA more powerfull ABBA, as in its time BEATLES, left an unforgettable mark on several generations It is good music that lasts and stays alive and well Thank you very much for your reaction; I hope to see you soon in next ABBA songs My next suggestion Is "Fernando" (1976) with the brunette singer Frida in lead voice My best regards to You from Buenos Aires, Argentina 🇦🇷 South América

Get your girls to react with you to the song " Mickey" by Toni Basil. Toni was kind of a one hit wonder. Your girls have to hear it though since the entire song is a cheerleading chant and most people in the video are in cheer uniforms

So many blokes in the UK at the time, did the video moves as a bit of fun. Just imagine a bunch of UK Skinheads/Scooterists, or Greasey haired/bearded Bikers, bouncing about chanting 'Hey Mickey' hillarious.

You’d be the first as no other reactors on KZfaq have reacted to these two songs by ABBA - so please could you do either ‘Lovers (Live A Little Longer)’ or ‘If It Wasn’t For The Nights’ If you could, that literally would be amazing as these two songs are incredibly underrated and hardly ever played - Plus, I can guarantee no one in the comments is going to request either of these two songs because like I say, they are so underrated! ❤

Thank you for reacting to this, my favorite ABBA song!! I knew you would like it! It has that special quality of sounding poignant and uplifting at the same time. Check out "Take a Chance On Me" if you haven't already (it's a fast, fun one) or "The Name of the Game" (for another moody-but-uplifting one). You won't be disappointed! (ps: I think the proper pronunciation of Agnetha's name--the Swedish pronunciation anyway---is "Ahn-YETT-ah". Love you guys!!

After Abba won Eurovision contest in 1974, "S.O.S." was one of their first hit singles in 1975 from their 3rd album (self-titled) which made them stars almost immediately... It was their 1976 album 'Arrival' that made them global superstars. FYI - Agnetha (the blonde singer) is pronounced "Ann - yet - ah" 😁Benny Andersson (keys/ piano/ organ) was the genius composer in Abba... his music was just out of this world.

Benny and Bjorn are song-writing geniuses and Agnetha & Frida have incredible voices and harmonies - that combination ruled the pop-charts for a big chunk of my adolescence. As others have said, there's plenty still in the ABBA back catalogue for you to react to.

I love so many of their songs but I think "What's the Name of the Game" is probably my favorite, mainly because it's about falling in love rather than breaking up and the video shows them in what seems to be happier times for them all. "Knowing Me knowing You" would be my second. Frida sings lead on that one and I think it's her best one. She also sings lead on "When All is Said and Done" which it wasn't a big hit single but it's very good and showcases her solo vocals well.
