Having those pictures, cards, and memorabilia are priceless. What a beautiful tribute to your father and grandfather and amazing legacy. When I look at my cards, I’m always reminded of how I started collecting which was solely because my dad took a bigger church in a bigger city to become their head Pastor. It was then I was introduced to new friends and a new hobby. Thank you, Terry for such a beautiful video and loving tribute. Happy Father’s Day, my friend.

Hi Doug, I was excited to see the signed Maglie card personalized to my grandfather. Then to see the two photos in the archives of the Niagara Gazette made everything come together to create something special. My grandfather was a humble man and rarely talked about playing baseball. Also, I didn’t appreciate it as much then. So, I don’t know much other than what my grandmother and dad told me. Thanks for sharing part of your collecting journey. For me, much of the joy of collecting is hearing others stories and the shared experiences. Happy Father’s Day, Doug. A good weekend to count our blessings.

Happy Father's Day, Terry! I love all those classic sitcoms! Family Ties, Growing Pains & Happy Days. Great tribute to your Dad & Grandfathers ❤ Mrs. Diaz has a plaque of Chicago Bulls player, Steve Kerr, that her Dad bought her at Walmart, when she was a kid. Her Dad wondered why she didn't choose the Michael Jordan plaque but she insisted on the Steve Kerr plaque ❤ That plaque is prominently displayed in our card showcase! I have my first ever Topps Traded Bo Jackson rookie card, my Dad bought me for Christmas years ago. That card is still in my childhood baseball card binder. Thanks for sharing, Terry!

Hi Tom! Thanks so much for your comment. The signed Maglie postcard came unexpectedly from one of my family members, along with some other items I haven't shown yet. I decided to search the Niagara Gazette archives on a whim to see if I could find any potential connections, and those two pictures with Maglie popped up. Neither my dad nor grandfather ever mentioned it. My grandfather was quite humble and never spoke much about his days playing local baseball. My father did share some stories, including his love of coaching, but I never knew about this. My grandma gave me the MVP photo and the one of him in his catcher’s gear. I'm sure there's much more I don't know about. These videos really help preserve what's known. Thanks again, Tom, for your comment. I hope you, your dad, and your family have a wonderful Father's Day weekend. Happy Father’s Day to your Pops. Take care!

TJ, this video is both heartfelt and well crafted. I know your Dad and Granddad would be very proud of the man you are today! The man who stands above all others in my life is my Uncle Bill. His favorite players were Robin Roberts and Warren Spahn. I always think of him whenever I look at any of their cards in my collection! Sadly, I grew up without getting to know my father or any of my grandfathers very well, but that is another story.

I have a 54 Eddie Mathews and a Carl Erskine Wilson Weiner that remind me of my dad. Hi Steve, I appreciate you sharing the cards that remind you of your dad. I remember seeing them on your channel. It is nice to see collectors connect with cards based on the nostalgia and family connections they provide. For many of us, it is the foundation on which our passion for the hobby was built. How special that you have the Lasorda autograph from your grandfather. I was so happy to add the AL Bombers card. It took me a few tries to get the one I wanted at the right price. That card is so rich with meaning. That is my favorite Leave it to Beaver episode. It moved me even as a kid. As a father of four now, it has even deeper meaning. I have never seen the Father's Day episode of Leave it to Beaver you described, but I did watch the show regularly growing up. There is something about that era that has so much innocence, character, and honesty to it. So endearing that I often wish I had grown up in that time. The book you used in your backdrop written by Joe Orlando is one that I just pulled off my shelf last week. I forgot that I had it. I don't even remember buying it, but opened it and started reading it again presumably for the 2nd time. Wonderful story you narrated about your grandfather and his experiences. Now that I am older and I look back I ask myself why I didn't take more time to listen; take more time to ask questions; and take more time to simply pay attention when I was younger. Now that these older generations that had an influence on us are gone, it leaves me with some regrets. A friend of our family was Bob Cerv. I had many opportunities to visit with him and never took the time. My father is still alive so your video is a good reminder to not create more regrets.
@tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648
@tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648 Ай бұрын
Thanks, Drew! I am with you about what that era represents. Like any time in history, there is some good and some bad, but it seems like people got along better and interacted more. We have more information available to us than at any other time in history, but we are shallower in our thinking. I don't think I bought the Orlando book either. I forgot where I got it from. Haha. It's a great book to thumb through and admire the cards. I love looking at the '52 Bowman football set-one of my favorites. Well stated about the opportunities we missed to learn more about those who are no longer with us. I think that is the story of young people since the beginning of time. When we're young, we typically don't value the wisdom of our elders. One of my main reasons for doing KZfaq is to keep the stories alive-not just about my life, but more importantly, those that came before me. It is likely that my kids will want to know more someday. Happy Father's Day to your dad. I hope you were able to spend some time with him. Take care, Terry

That was a brilliant essay and hearing it now after all these years made me a tad emotional. I could see you writing that in tribute to your dad. I could also see your kids making a modernized version of that essay. Someday, we'll need to discuss the episode where Beaver climbs to the top of a billboard to see if there is soup in the bowl. HAHAHA! Thanks for the shoutout. Sal "The Barber" Maglie. Vin Scully told me about him as a kid. Amazing to see how a guy so hated on the Giants could turn out to be loved by Dodgers fans. Hi Rick! Yes, I enjoy all those family sitcoms. They were a big part of my TV watching as a kid, and I would even watch them with my kids. There is something comforting about the 30-minute sitcom. You'd see one of the kids get into some type of trouble, and everything would be solved within 30 minutes. It helped put your problems in perspective. Haha. Yes, I remember the soup bowl episode well. I was shocked to find those photos from the Niagara Gazette with my grandfather and Sal Maglie. The power of Google! I imagine they had a pretty good relationship. I wonder if they ever played ball with each other. Unfortunately, they are all gone now. That is one of the reasons why I do KZfaq-to keep these memories intact for the day my kids may be interested. That AL Bombers card is a beauty. I have never owned one. I saw probably 9 or 10 games at Yankee Stadium with my dad and brother. We went to both the old and new stadiums. We saw the Yankees and Red Sox play in the early 2000s when both were top-tier teams. We also saw them play the Rays in a doubleheader and the Mets. Thanks, my friend. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday.

So cool TJ. Love the story of your grandfather and Maglie. I’d love to hear about your experience playing ball growing up as you’ve got great athletic pedigree. That AL Bombers card is amazing as well. Baseball was one of the main links between me, my Dad and Grandfather and the primary drive for my card collection. I’ve got a strip card of Hack Wilson and a 33’ Goudy Lon Warneke that reminds me of my Grandfathers memories growing up a Cubs fan in Chicago. As for my Dad…I’ve got a signed ball from Vin Scully on display reminding me of the countless games sitting and listening to Dodgers games on the radio talking baseball. He had so many cool stories as he was a star for Nevada Southern College (before it became UNLV) and was invited to camp with the SF Giants. Happy Fathers Day TJ!

Happy Father's Day Todd!! I love hearing how much your collecting centers around your family. Listening to Vin Scully with your dad. It doesn't get much better than that. Very impressive you dad was a college star and invited to the Giants camp. I am sure he has some great stories. I wasn't a great baseball player growing up. I didn't have a strong throwing arm and was just an okay hitter. My preferred sport was football where I enjoyed playing running back. Like my father, I am 5'8 where my grandfather was over 6'2. Though, my father was an excellent baseball player. I did inherit my grandfather's love of coaching and player development. That is the first AL Bombers card I have ever owned. Great Fathers day message Terry. Your introduction does inspire. Those sitcoms would probably come off as racist or bigoted these days. I saw that episode of "Leave it to Beaver" you spoke of and it was a great episode. Nice that your grandfathers are both in the sports HOF. You have great keepsakes to view and eventually pass on. Your videos will help family remember you well. Have a wonderful Fathers Day weekend.

Hi Dan, Thank you for always offering kind and encouraging words. You're probably right about the sitcoms coming off that way to some who have a narrow view and always focus on the negative. Times have changed, as we know. Some changes are good, and some not so much. That Father's Day essay is timeless and speaks to what a father should strive to be. Leave it to Beaver has held up because it does a good job of viewing life from a kid's perspective. I am glad you enjoyed it. Have a Happy Father's Day, my friend.

Terry, you could be a professional narrator! What a wonderful tribute to your father and grandfather! Congrats on picking up a sweet copy of the A.L. Bombers, just in time for Father's Day! We both have really nice copies of the 1952 Bowman Vic Raschi! I'm wondering if he connects to your father? You did not mention Vic in this video, unless I somehow missed it? Happy Father's Day, my collecting brother! 😊👊

Thanks, Adam! You're too kind, my friend. Narration and weaving stories together are things I enjoy doing. Yes, you do have a nice Raschi and we are clubbies. There was no specific tie-in beyond my grandfather being a lifelong Yankees fan. Sometimes, I just like to show cards when I do my video openings. I have profiled the Yankees' "Big Three" in the past when I received a childhood scrapbook from my wife's late uncle. He put it together in the late '40s-early '50s, and those Yankees teams were part of it. Happy Father's Day to you as well. I hope you're enjoying your day.

Outstanding, Terry. You are a true artist with your words. A wonderful tribute. Your reference to the Leave it to Beaver episode really hit home. Ward was a character a lot like my dad. He was my mentor, counselor and my biggest fan in all the sports I participated in. He was not a famous or "power" guy. He and my mom raised five kids and quietly placed values in our young minds that I carry to this day. Too often these days, dads are portrayed as buffoons. Simple time-tested "values" and virtues are dismissed or mocked. We talk a lot in this community about underappreciated ballplayers. I think we don't do enough appreciating the dads who are some of the real heroes. Thank you for your Father's Day tribute. And Happy Father's Day to you, my good friend.

Hi Rob, Thank you for always showing your kindness by offering encouraging words. You're a good man. It's funny you mentioned dads being portrayed as buffoons. I almost talked about that in my video but ultimately decided not to, but it's true. It is disheartening to see the lack of good male role models on television. Ward Cleaver, Mike Brady, Bill Cosby (yes, we know off camera he was different), and Steven Keaton were all strong, compassionate, and wise fathers. Boy, I miss those days. Thank goodness for reruns. I hope you had a wonderful Father's Day. Take care, my friend.

Terry, keep being a wonderful role model for your children and those around you in your life. My "buffoon" comment relates to the so-called children sitcoms starting back in the '90's where virtually every dad was portrayed as a weak, wimpy, pathetic "buffoon". You are too young to have seen these show live but Robert Young "Father Knows Best", Lorne Greene "Bonanza", Chuck Connors "The Rifleman", and Andy Griffith presented a father role model too often mocked today. As you said, thank goodness for re-runs!

@BaseballTimeTraveler Thanks Rob. I agree the sitcom fathers really went down hill starting in the late 80s. I am a huge Rifleman fan. I still watch it from time to time. You can’t get much better than Lucas McCain for a role model. He had the best gun of them all too. Sports, reruns and history shows make up most of my tv/KZfaq time. Haha

Sal Maglie was my father's favorite player when he was a kid growing up in NYC. My father grew up in the Bronx, but the Giants were his team, not the Yankees, though he lived in the shadow of Yankee Stadium. The Polo Grounds were just across the river, and he preferred Maglie & the Giants, who won sometimes (1951, 1954) to the Yankees, who won all the time. He wouldn't be happy with that Maglie mural because of Maglie in the Yankee uniform, but I kind of understand it. After all, why honor the Giants, who deserted New York for California?

Thank you for sharing about your father and his fondness for Maglie. I enjoy reading about the sports heroes' dads of that generation cheered for. To me, it was the greatest era of baseball. As a Yankees fan, I found it odd that they would depict Maglie in a Yankees uniform. I would love to confirm why. I am only speculating that they chose the Yankees given their popularity in the area, as I grew up in the city. Have a great rest of the week.

Hi Terry! What a wonderful tribute to your father and your grandfathers. Were you aware of the connection of Maglie and your grandfather before you received that package? It’s really an honor to be elected into a hall of fame. It’s fantastic both your grandfathers are inducted. That industrial league had to be a lot of fun to play in. I wish those baseball leagues still existed. The AL Bombers card was a great addition. Do you have a display case that represents your grandfathers and father? Hope you have a great Father’s Day! Any special plans?

Hi Andy, my oldest son and youngest daughter have baseball/softball tournaments this weekend. A great way to spend the weekend. The games haven’t gone well so far, but it is still baseball and where I want to be. What are your plans? Yes, I was fortunate enough to attend both HOF dinners. Too bad both had passed at that point. My mom’s dad died when she was twelve. He was responsible for bringing Little League to Niagara Falls. He was a good ball player and boxer too. My dad’s father is the one I knew. He scared me as a kid because he was pretty sarcastic but humble. He reminded me of Ted Williams. Though, Ted wasn’t humble. Haha. My dad who was also a good ball player would rave about how good a coach my grandfather was. I wish the Industrial Leagues still existed too. I figured my grandfather probably met Maglie but I had no idea that there interactions went deeper than that. He never talked about it. Maglie died the year I graduated. My best friend’s mom was one of his nurses. She said he was a pleasant man. I LOVE that AL Bombers card and the feelings about baseball and family it evokes. I don’t have a separate case for my grandfathers and fathers cards, but I do have them in my collecting journey case. Take care

I just did another sit down interview with Pat Donatelli, son of Augie Donatelli who's the umpire on the 1st cover of Sports Illustrated. Pat brought his brother Dave this time who turned out to be a great guy. Pat is compiling all the stuff he needs to make a push to get his dad in the HOF. It's really heartwarming watching a son who loves and respects his dad so much trying to cement his legacy. If you like to read Terry, you should order the book "Augie". He was a B-17 tailgunner and a POW, really incredible story. I'm not gonna put the video out until after I make one showing my huge magazine collection.

That is great your providing them with a platform to speak about their dad. The grassroots effort Pat is doing can be effective in getting HOF consideration. It is easy to forgot those who contributed to the game in the long past. Thanks for the book recommendation. I don’t know if you have children, but I want to with you a Happy Father’s Day. If you or wife’s dads are still alive, Happy Father’s Day to them too.

born during Vietnam family sit coms Happy days Brady Bunch Partridge Family the wonder years Cosby Show All in the Family Good Times this is what went on before you tube when not watching a movie and not playing or recording music? Nice Photos , nice news photos , nice 1952 Bowman Sal Maglie , nice 1964 Topps Bombers best Maris , Cash Mantle and Kaline sweet card, Now to answer your question what cards remind me of my Father, My Father is still with us he drives further than me many times over better at directions than me. But he's having problems walking which doesn't make me happy. he can't come to my condo anymore as i'm on the 2nd floor and going down the steps is to hard for him we tried it when he cameback from the rehab hospital a month later. I hope something changes that a Dr. helps him build up. he's Elvis's age. so my Dad is from Doorchester Mass where the Sam Adams brewery is . he moved out of that area in early 60's. to New York. cards that remind me of my dad would be players like Gino Cappelitti of the Boston Patriots Carl Garrett, New England John Hannah , John Smith, Sam Cunningham Football all different years. Baseball 1960 Yaz rookie his 60's cards up to about 1971? 1966 up to about a 1972 of Bobby Orr whatever Phil Esposito's rookie up to about 1971 or 1972 John Havelczek of the Celtics I don't have any of these cards as I mainly have all different years and players from different teams. he's like Jim all Boston 4 teams. but living down here he also roots for the Yankees and Mets . but as far as those players the closest would be a Phil Esposito which I have in my family binder next to BlackHawks brother Tony the family set which I hope never ends. So being from Upstate New York I guess with all of the photos and articles in sports magazines being a Yankees fan makes sense!!!! with Hockey Before the Sabres came into the league did your father have a favorite Hockey team? Same for Football any favorite teams before the Bills joined the League I will assume 1960 could be wrong?

Hi Mark! Those are all good shows you listed that I have watched at some point in my life. I am glad to hear your dad is still alive and you're able to spend time with him. Hopefully, he can improve his walking. Being he is from Dorchester, I can see where he was deeply involved with Boston sports. You listed some good players that he followed. Phil Esposito's first two cards are on the Blackhawks. His first card with the Bruins is 1967. I don't have that one but would like to get it. His rookie is very expensive. I am not sure what team he followed before the Sabres. I know he was a fan of Bobby Orr and Guy LaFleur, but I don't think he necessarily was a fan of those teams. For football, my father-in-law was a Browns, Indians and Celtics fan. When the Buffalo Braves came into existence, he began to follow them. I am not sure who my dad like before the Bills. I imagine the Giants. Thanks Mark!
