Ahhhh, notebooks. My go-to for the past many, many years has been Nanami Paper's Seven Seas notebooks. TR paper, tons of pages, comes blank/lined/cross (their version of dot). I stocked up when TR first had trouble so I have years' worth of journals!

Yup...I stocked up on TR and am glad of it. Knowing myself, It is likely I will use the Writer from Nanami occasionally in order to stretch supply. The compact A5 size, ink resistant 52g paper give 480 pages of journaling in a very compact size. This is the primary reason why I use this sort of journal. The 7mm is also a help, as is the stitched binding. I understand that the new paper does not allow for as crisp a line edge as the old TR. I’ll bet this problem can be mitigated through careful juice of ink.

I use the Nanami Paper notebooks. They all have TR paper and I use the A5, A6, and B6 slim for different purposes. The price is good for me considering the number of pages in the notebook. I've been trying other notebooks and papers and I just can't quit these ones.

I love the Doctor Who holiday shirt and the tower of notebooks! I have a preference for soft cover notebooks (and paper that can take all kinds of writing mediums) so my current favorites are Midori MD, Life Noble Note, and Muji. I'm no sad I never got to try the Elia Note. :( I don't journal but that doesn't stop me from collecting all the notebooks. (I'm stocking up on all the Tomoe River paper I can. XD) Thank you for the notebook review compilation!

Leuchtturm hardcover A5 for me. I do art journaling alongside writing and I love how it takes it. I love the various colors Leuchtturm comes in, it has plenty of pages to keep me happy, lays flat and takes my abuse. I buy the dotted and once in awhile, a plain. I have a beautiful leather cover that I got super cheap off of eBay because the seller modified it (cut a slit in the rear pocket so the closure band could be used). I was tempted to do the same thing but hated to cut my expensive covers and now I don't have to. It looks snazzy with a colored elastic keeping it closed.

Currently I journal in two journals. 1] Dietary journal is a Leuchttturm 1917 A5 size ~ lined. Due to me being beyond 45 years of age, our bodies change and at my doctors order/suggestion, I write all that I ingest in a notebook… one page = one day. So, If I develop a gradual allergic reaction I can look back and see what might be the cause. Also I keep track of my sodium and cholesterol ingestion. I buy mine at a local bookstore (Broadway Books)… supporting local businesses. 2] My random thoughts/ stream-of-consciousness journal is a Peter Pauper Press notebook 18X22cm (7X8.5in) size ~ lined. They do make a slightly smaller version, but I prefer this size. The paper is a crème color, lines are 8mm apart, and it is a very fountain pen friendly paper for most of my pens. Those pens with bleed through are the ones with a wet/gusher/fire hose nib. I buy mine at a local bookstore (The New Renaissance Bookshoip)… again supporting local businesses. FULL DISCLOSURE: I have a stockpile of notebooks awaiting to used, thus I am not buying any new notebooks until the stockpile is just a few.

I write apps. I use my journals and fountain pens to keep notes on what I'm doing with the app and error recovery methods. Meaning there are a lot of journals. I have been using Rhodia A5, soft cover, with grid markings. I found this video wo be very helpful. . . I'm looking to try other journals and paper. I'm thinking Galen Leather Everyday next. . they are a little bit more, but they look so nice. Again, thanks for the info. . .

The Nanami Cafe Notes/Seven Seas notebooks are my absolute favorite (they use tomoe river paper and the new blank seven seas A5 uses the new Sanzen Tomoe River Successor Paper). I also buy a lot of the Jet Pens Kanso Note because it's a simple no frills A5 notebook with 320 pages that uses Tomoe River Paper and costs less than $20. It uses dot grid though so if that's not your jam you may not like the note book. I also dabble in Danika58's notebooks. Again no frills notebooks with great paper (I've been using her B6 size Sanzen Tomoe River Successor books). I normally indulge when I have a big order because the shipping is high since it comes from Japan. I also dabble with Midori MD Paper just because certain lower saturated inks look amazing on that cream paper. I've also got 3 of the Paper Mind's bank paper notebooks and I like it so far.

I was using Rhodia composition notebooks for my daily (Morning Pages) writing. But after I finished my last one, I wanted a notebook that had a higher page count that would last longer. So I got the AHGXG Lined Journal Notebook - 320 Numbered Pages Thick Journal Large B5 College Ruled Notebook, 100gsm Thick Lined Paper, Faux Leather Softcover. I think it's my new favourite notebook! For YOU, dear Kerry, it would tick a lot of boxes: A5, numbered pages, 7mm lines, lies flat, floppy-bendy cover. (First 3 pages are Index pages). While not as thin as Tomoe, the paper is very smooth on both sides AND way more consistent than Rhodia (which sometimes feathered with the same pen and ink when I wrote on the next page). Basic pen tests: Rollerballs, .05 & .07 size, both fine & medium fountain pen nibs with Diamine Oxford Blue ink. Highlighters, Bic markers, even watercolour paints performed well; a little ghosting, but no bleed-thru. I don't use shimmer inks, so I don't know how they would do and my go-to for Morning Pages has been the aforementioned quick-dry Diamine or my own inkjet printer inks. Bottom line: it's a solid notebook and a great price point and I think you might like it.

Great overview, i've used most of them too and TR paper too, of course. I haven't used Galen but I've used a LOT of crossfield from seven seas with TR that looks pretty similar to the Galen. They also have (had?) a mystique one with slightly different paper that I also like. I like the midori paper a lot, though, and don't care about sheen/shimmer inks. I've found the shading to be solid with some of my favorite inks but blue-blacks are my favorite colors. I have a few of the Franklin Christoph sugarcane A5s with the distinctive cut off corners and I'll be **very** sad when I'm out of them. They are very nice and the leather covers make them great for work/professional appearance. I found Muji notebooks to be great paper that isn't TR but pretty similar. I like the 48(ish) page notebooks for work notes/short term projects etc. I found the brand 'deal genius' on that big webstore and their paper is pretty FP friendly for the inks I use (but no sheen) and they are quite affordable for the budget conscious.

I have tough paper requirements as I'm not writing I'm doodling dense textures often with really wide nibs that put down a lot of ink. So current favorite is the Leuchtturm 1917 120g stuff. Like it's smoothness but most importantly how heavy weight the paper is. Doesn't buckle or show through to the other side as much as Midori does. But it still feels like I'm always on the lookout for the perfect paper to fit my high demands

Have you tried Nanami Paper's Seven Seas notebooks? They're A5 journals that use 52gsm Tomoe River paper and have a very large page count (480 pages). The price is excellent too, probably the best price per page for Tomoe River paper out there. However, I haven't tried their notebooks with the new Tomoe River paper because I had bought enough for two decades' worth of daily writing.

I've been loving Graphilo, Jet Pens has the thicker ones, A5 slim. Other than that, I stocked up on the hobonichi notebook in A6 this past year, I have enough to last.... a while. I'm a lefty so I just can't handle toothy paper, I'm worried that the extra tooth in Sanzen won't be tolerable for me, so didn't want to risk it. I already know I can't handle TR9 so... yeah. Big stock stored with silica packs!

This is a funny area to me because I bounce between things like stockpiling OG Tomoe River journals and my inner nerd insisting I could not resist a Doctor Who River Song journal which may not even be fountain pen friendly any more than the Coraline pocket notebook I couldn’t resist. The Studio Ghibli journals are advertised as being fountain pen friendly but I haven’t tried my Kiki’Delivery Service and My Neighbor Totoro journals as yet. So I can not vouch for them. But I have used my “Sorry, I I wasn’t listening. I was busy thinking about Alan Rickman” journal and can vouch it can feather a bit or ghost a fair bit when using a very wet nib. You need to swab or sling ink to get bleed through. Anyway, I think you can see why I squealed with glee on seeing your tee shirt as well as why I want to avoid spoilers.

I have a Nanami notebook with Tomoe River and the crosshatch (I forget their word for that). When I'm not using that it is probably a Leuchtturm, I'm not into sheen (though I love a good shading) so I tend to like slightly more absorbant FP paper. I don't know the name of my most recent notebook, but it is noteworthy because it was sooo bad at not opening that I'm inclined to throw in the towel after 25% despite the fp friendly paper being pretty good. I also have several moleskines around my house from a pre-fp era I can't bring myself to part with (embossed designs etc) but will never use.

check out 'deal genius' and my comment upthread for a solid budget choice that has worked for me (no affiliation). the only thing that has bled on it for me is PR infinity violet but to be fair that ink is doing something different with its cap-off time AND it bleeds on many papers that take all other inks. I think you'd find the paper similar in bleed resistance to Life/Midori.

Too bad that Galen leather no longer used old TR paper (#7). Really miss it. I am fortunate to grab three Galen notebooks in CAL. Galen's CAL (75gsm) is better than danika's CAL in terms of sheen and shading imho. I also got some Graphilo notebooks recently. Their performance is on par with Galen's CAL or maybe a slightly better. But they are too expensive.

Hello there, I just want to comment two thing just in case anybody confirm them or not. First; Clairefointe bought Rhodia, now they use the same paper (same factories, thickness and so on). Second; Leuchturm lately has changed their manufacturing processes and I've read negative opinions about Leuchturm users. Does anybody hear anything related to those two subjects? Great vblog @pens_and_tea !!!
@jamesaritchie1
@jamesaritchie1 Жыл бұрын
Well, they don't use exactly the same paper. Clairefontaine does own Rhodia, but the Rhodia paper is still made how and where it was before. As for Leuchtturm, I've never thought it was good fountain pen paper at all. Certainly not with the nibs and inks I use. The only change I personally know of with Leuchtturm paper is that they made it a lot thicker so it won't ghost or bleed. I think it's a huge improvement, but some love it, and some do not. But some hated the old paper, and some loved it. Most of the complaints I've heard come from people who don't use fountain pens, though certainly not all fountain pen users like the change. I can only say they don't use the same nibs and inks that I use. Regular Leuchtturm paper doesn't just ghost with many of my nibs and inks, it bleeds dreadfully.
