Hi Austin! After watching your video, and hearing several stories similar to yours, I feel that these kinds of dates are unfortunately more common than they seem, (even outside of L.A.). I have even had experiences similar to yours in my community. Even with heterosexual dates this happens all too often. I am glad that you are speaking openly about it because it encourages people, and your audience members (like me :)) to learn how to confront the situation immediately and share boundaries right away with people (hopefully...). I was just speaking with my mom yesterday about how I'd like to start a relationship of some sort, though not through these apps--due to the soliciting of sex as if I am just a toy. Maybe we (or just I) am taking the idea of dates, relationships, and sex too seriously; is it possible American culture has cultivated my mind to think sex is taboo? I'd really like to talk about this! I'd been talking to a guy for a number of weeks on Grindr. Exchanged lots of pics and talked on the phone. I asked him out on a date (YES, to all the negative nancies on here, dates can come from Grindr). The date was planned for just a few days later. I found out his favourite candy and made him a licorice/candy bouquet. When I went to pick him up at his house, the guy that got into my car was not the same person in the pictures =-O Same voice, same name, but clearly not the same person as in the pics he'd sent. I called him on it, his excuse? "old pics, gained weight". Even if the person I saw in the pictures had eaten a tub of lard daily for 6 months straight he still wouldn't be the guy that got into my little 2 door FIAT. I was so shocked that someone would do that, that we went for a pint, I faked a text from my roommate and got the eff out as fast as I could.

Not that it excuses it in any way... but because it was GRINDR, I almost feel like it should be a little expected. I know some people use Grindr to connect, but it really is a hook up app. Overwhelmingly, the men on Grindr are looking for sex. I think the guy felt a little "played" because you met on a "hook-up" site and you didn't want to hook up. It's like going to Disneyland with a front of the line pass, that you paid lots of money for, and then refusing to go on any rides. It was probably really frustrating for the guy. I think that OKCupid or MeetUp is probably a better venue for what you are looking for sweetie. You seem to have a lot of class and morals and it think it's commendable.
